2015. good morning, i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. federal safety officials believe a spike in electricity caused a deadly smoke condition in a washington, d.c., subway station. the blinding smoke quickly filled the plaza metro station yet afternoon. hundreds were evacuated from the station and a stalled train. one person died and dozens suffered from smoke inhalation. as mola lenghi of our washington station wusa reports, subway riders say they were overcome very quickly. >> i was on the train, and it just stopped and almost instantaneously got full of smoke. >> reporter: as smoke filled the metro train and tunnel, passengers say the conductors urged them to remain calm. >> please stay calm. please stay calm. we've got one train about to get off the platform right now as we speak. >> people were getting out of hand. they were panicking. the next thing you know, you other on the train. >> from the smoke? >> right.

>> a lot of people were on the floor because it was very strong. >> on the floor? >> yeah. >> it just got really bad. people were throwing up. i know one lady passed out. >> how were you able to eventually get off? >> the fire guys finally got there, and i guess they pried the door open. and one by one, they started letting us out. >> reporter: escorted by firefighters, one by one passengers walked the roughly 150 feet through the dark smoke-filled tunnel from the train to the platform and then finally outside where the scene continued. people gasping for breath, vomiting, covered in soot, coughing. first responders piling up oxygen tanks to treat the injured anywhere they could in ambulances and on medical buses. metro buses taken out of service and doubling as a sort of triage for passengers with smoke inhalation. more than 60 people were hospitalized. two in critical condition and one woman was killed. >> my heart goes out to her family. the person had been on the train, was in distress, was evacuated from the train by emergency services. >> reporter: some passengers

claim they were stuck on the smoking train for up to an hour. >> there are protocols that we follow in terms of what we have to go through and, again, how that was followed and everything else would be in the investigation. >> reporter: so will the cause of the smoke. >> electrical malfunction is what they kept saying. >> reporter: but metro says they're still investigating. >> we're evaluating the conditions, and we will let you know as soon as we can open it up. >> that was wusa's mola lenghi reporting. and tsb investigators say a preliminary report may be ready in about a week. meanwhile, firefighters are swarming new york city's busiest train station this morning. a three-alarm fire started just after 2:00 a.m. near penn station. dozens of fire trucks are positioned outside the station. penn station is a hub for amtrak and two commuter lines. smoke can be seen pouring out onto the street from underground. it's believed the fire broke out at a construction site below a subway station.

this morning indonesia search and rescue officials say they believe they've discovered the main wreckage, the fuselage from airasia flight 8501. and the jet's cockpit voice recorder has been retrieved. yesterday the flight data recorder was recovered. flight 8501 crashed in the java sea december 28th, killing all 162 people on board. four of the victims killed in last week's terrorist attacks in france will be buried today. their bodies arrived in israel this morning. the men were killed at the kosher market. elaine cobb is in paris with the latest. elaine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. here in france, the muslim policeman killed execution style outside the "charlie hebdo" offices last week is being buried today. french president hollande will pay tribute to the three police officers killed in the attacks. he'll award them the legion of honor, france's highest distinction. security remains high around the

city and around the country. 10,000 troops are moving into place today at sensitive sites all across the country. and a force of nearly 5,000 police and gendarms are in place around jewish schools and synagogues. "charlie hebdo," the satirical newspaper at the heart of this and the scene of the first attacks last week, is out tomorrow, but we've already seen the front page. the front page shows a cartoon of the prophet muhammad with a placard saying "je suis charlie" and the headline "all is forgiven." all is not for given for those who carried out the attacks. police here say they're still looking for hayat boumeddiene, the partner of amedy coulibaly, she's now confirmed to be in turkey. police say they're also looking for six teams of possible accomplices. lauren? >> elaine cobb in paris, thank you. survivors of an attack by militants in nigeria describe

days of systematic killing. the attack took place near a village in northeastern nigeria after boko haram militants seized a nearby military base on january 3rd. one witness says people were slaughtered like insects. amnesty international says there are reports indicating the death toll could be as high as 2,000. u.s. officials are playing down a cyber attack against the u.s. central command. the command oversees u.s. military operations in the middle east. hackers claiming to be sympathizers of the islamic state broke into the command's twitter and youtube accounts. the fbi says it's investigating. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: lauren, good morning. the pentagon is calling this little more than a prank. and officials say it appears no classified or sensitive information was breached. at least, though this is an embarrassing incident for u.s. officials. the fbi and the pentagon are now

trying to figure out if these hackers have any real ties to isis. u.s. central command is tweeting again this morning, following what the pentagon calls a case of cyber vandalism. late last night centcom tweeted "we're back." it suspended service for hours after a group calling itself the cyber caliphate hijacked the site, posting this image and warning american soldiers, we are coming. watch your back. isis. the fbi is investigating the group's claim that they're working on behalf of islamic state militants. the group also claimed it penetrated military networks and included a link to an old contact list with names, phone numbers and e-mails of senior army generals. >> at a minimum, it's embarrassing. >> reporter: defense officials said in a statement, "operational military networks were not compromised." >> the fact is the threat environment is getting worse, and there are actors out there looking to shoot at and get at u.s. military personnel. >> reporter: the white house says it's taking the attack seriously but is downplaying the

two police officers in albuquerque, new mexico, face murder charges this morning. s.w.a.t. team member dominique perez and former detective keith sandy are accused in the march shooting death of james boyd. the mentally ill homeless man wielded a knife, but video appears to show him surrendering. the incident sparked violence protests and brought new scrutiny to a department already under investigation. newly released dashcam video shows the emotional reaction of a montana police officer moments after shooting and killing an unarmed man. >> i thought he was going to pull a gun on me. >> maybe he was. maybe he was. jesus, grant. you survived. >> a jury saw that video and determined that grant morrison was justified in the shooting. the billings police officer shot 38-year-old richard ramirez three times.

end the day at $46.07 a barrel. brent crude lost $2.68 a barrel to finish at $47.43. both are trading at their lowest levels since march of 2009. those falling oil prices sent stocks lower. the dow lost 96 points. the s&p slid 16. and the nasdaq was down 39 points. the controversial keystone xl oil pipeline passed a key hurdle in the senate. the pipeline got enough votes yesterday to prevent a filibuster. it would begin in canada and hook up with an existing pipeline in nebraska that goes all the way to the texas gulf coast. the senate expects to vote on and pass the measure next week. president obama, though, he says he will veto the measure. cyber thieves broke into customer accounts at american and united airlines, trying to steal frequent flyer miles. the airlines say the thieves didn't break into their system but got user names and passwords somewhere else.

american says no miles were stolen, but united says thieves were able to book trips and make other mileage transactions. at the detroit auto show, ford unveiled its high-performance gt, its first gt model in more than a decade. the body is lightweight, carbon fiber. under the hood, a twin turbocharged 3.5-liter v6, producing more than 600 horsepower. the twin-seater goes on sale late next year priced in the $200,000 range. harold diamond can afford to buy a ford gt or any car he wants. diamond, an 80-year-old retired school principal, is the sole winner of the november's $326 million megamillions drawing. he picked up his check yesterday. >> i was, like, in a daze, you know. i'm looking at the numbers, and i keep going back and forth. and like i was saying to carol upstairs, read the numbers backwards. and then she read them backwards and then we went forwards.

incredible. >> reporter: it's the eighth time the buckeyes have walked away as college football's best. megan alexander for cbs news, arlington, texas. and former miami dolphins fullback rob konrad is speaking about the ordeal that nearly cost him his life. last week konrad was fishing alone when he fell from his boat into the waters nine miles from palm beach, florida. his boat was on autopilot and kept going without him. with no help in sight, konrad had no choice but to start swimming. >> everything that i've read had said you had two to three hours of treading water or swimming before you have hypothermia or you cramped up, and both were going to be bad outcomes. >> it took 16 hours, but konrad swam all the way to shore. his boat was found this week on a reef near grand bahama island. this is the "cbs morning news."
