this is the "cbs morning news" for january 16th 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in deadly attacks aet a french newspaper and a parisian grocery store. elaine cobb is in paris. elaine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. french police cared out raids overnight. ten people were detained. police believe they may have provided logistical support for last week's attacks here including sourcing weapons and a car. we also just heard that german police have taken two men into custody this morning in berlin. the men are being held on recruiting fighters and giving

equipment and funding for isis. the biggest raids were in neighboring belgium. security forces there raided ten location including a former bakery last night in the town of of. making a belated trip to offer support to the french. he said he wanted to give france a hug. he had a roundtable meeting with president francois hollande. then he went to lay a wreath at a kosher supermarket where four hostages were killed. he's also the offices of "charlie hebdo" where he's also placed flowers and met a survivor there who he hugged. >> elaine cobb thank you. meanwhile. it's not clear where the

you. the ohio man is scheduled to appear in federal court in cincinnati today. this morning we're learning more about christopher lee cornell and how the 'legend plot was uncovered. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> good morning, lauren. house speaker john boehner said it was an electronic surveillance program that alerted authorities to his violent intentions. >> the first thing that strikes me is we would have never known about this had it not been for the fisa program and our ability to collect information on people who pose an imminent threat. >> boehner is referring to the formal intelligence security act. he shows he supports islamic

extremists and he reports that he had been in contact with people overseas. cornell was arrested outside of a gun store after buying two automatic rifles and 60 rounds of ammunition. authorities say cornell planned to attack the capital with pipe bombs and shoot government officials. house speaker john boehner said he deliberately mentioned fisa because he said congress must renew it soon or it will expire. >> thank you for that. now, if you got your flu shot, there is a good chance you will get sick. research found this year's vaccine isn't very effective. dr. jon lapook shows us why. >> reporter: heather douglas and all four of her children got flu shots this year but heather, her baby and 6-year-old still got the flu. piper had to be hospitalized. >> it was a waste of six doctor's appointments for my whole family and times and lots

of tears from little girls who don't want to get shots. >> reporter: the cdc said this year's flu vaccine is only 23% effective, the worst seen in a decade. early on the cdc realized this vaccine is poorly matched to the virus but it was too late to change it. dr. alyssa frye is a cdc epidemiologist. >> if we look over the course of time we've been new york vaccine effectiveness, effectiveness can range from 10% to 60%. >> reporter: the flu vaccine is made by isolated specific proteins from the surface of the virus. it causes the vaccine to make antibodies to recognize and lock onto the proteins. when there's a good match, the two fit well together. when the virus mutates which happened this year, the two don't lock together as well and the virus escapes the immune system. dr. david nace runs a program.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch" target misses the mark in canada and a "fifty shades of grey" teddy bear. that demands submission. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. here on wall street stock lost ground for a sixth day in a row. the dow dropped 106 points. the s&p fell 18 points. the nasdaq finished the day 68 points lower. target is closing shop in canada shutting all 133 stores across the border. target began operating in canada in 2013. it faced problems from the start.

costly regulations, the slow economy, and increasing competition. the company says it can't figure out a realistic way to turn a profit in canada before 2021. google said its ending sales of it's glass eyeware to consumers. it's working on a different version. it's allowing people to get information on a small screen, but amid concerns about privacy and safety it was never a major hit. a new version is expected by the end of this year. and just in time for valentine's day, a "50 shades of grey" teddy bear. yes, this teddy from the vermont teddy bear company comes with handcuffs and a blindfold. like the movie, the bear has a black suit like the main character christian grey priced at $89.99.

nine nominations including best picture and director as well as acting nods for michael keaton edward norton, and emma stone. it tied with the grand budapest hotel. rounding out the best picture "american sniper," "boyhood," the imitation game," "selma," "the theory of everything," and "whiplash." bradley cooper score add best actor nod in "american sniper." he goes up against "fox catcher," michael keaton in the "birdman," and eddie redmayne in "the theory of everything." left out, david oyelowo.

>> reporter: marian cotillard beat out jennifer aniston in "cake "cake." j.k. simmons is considered the front runner in the supporting actor category. he faces off against robert duvall, ethan hawke, edward norton, and mark ruffalo. patricia arquette earned her first oscar nod. she goes up against lauren dern keira knightley and meryl streep. this is streep's 19th academy award nomination. teri okita, cbs news, hollywood. the lack of diversity among the oscar contenders sparked a backlash backlash. civil rights leader al sharpton called the list of nominees insulting. he said, quote, with all the talent in "selma" and other black movies this year it's hard to believe. they're using #oscarsowhite.

all oscar nominees are white. super bowl xlix will be decided in sunday's conference championship games. for a second year in a row the seattle seahawks are hosting the nfc championship game. they'll take on the green bay packers. seattle beat green bay in week one, 36-16. the indianapolis colts are seeking their third trip to the super bowl in nine years. they're traveling to new england to take on the patriots. new england topped in 42-11. it's the fourth straight year that tom brady and the pats. but it's the first time for quarterback andrew luck. >> experience helps. i think as a team, every game we get closer and closer together as a unit, as an offensive unit, as a unit as a whole. you know i think we're more prepared to handle the unknown, to handle the unexpected. >> and the only place to see the

officials in connecticut are investigating the cause of an earthquake outbreak. a dozen quakes have struck around the town of plainfield this week. as jericka duncan reports, residents are shaken. >> reporter: in the last week rattled plainfield, connecticut, residents have made more than 300 calls to 911. >> i just had a big explosion. i don't know what it is, but my whole house shook. >> it's coming from all over the area. i'm getting lots of calls, ma'am. >> reporter: marian diggs says she's felt every earthquake. >> i was sitting in bed drinking my early morning cup of coffee before everybody got up, my time, and all of a sudden i heard this loud boom. >> reporter: people here have reported minor damage from the 12 earthquakes that have hit

between the town of danielson and plainfield. most have been under a 2.0 magnitude. the largest occurred monday morning at 3.1. seismologists at boston college western observatory are collecting data on the frequent tremors hoping to find out why the so-called swarms are happening. dr. john ebel. >> we've had a few scattered epicenters in that part of the state, but this is something new to us. >> reporter: scientists tell us earthquakes are usually caused when underground plates are moving from side to side. in connecticut the plates are moving up and down. plainfield police chief michael supernant said without answers, the phone calls from worried residents continue. >> we can't put our finger on it, and before you even know what's happening, it's over. >> it's the talk of the town right now? >> it's taking up a lot of our time. i can month evidently say i've gotten no police work done. >> reporter: hydraulic fracking has been the cause for

'em it's friday, we have traffic and weather and we have a cameo from gianna and roberta starts with the weather. >> we are starting off with another "spare the air" day. out the door, we currently have air temperatures pretty much in the 40s across the board. 30s around american canyon into vallejo. today mostly cloudy. you may need an umbrella. we'll have the forecast coming up. checking the roads, we're keeping a close eye on mass transit this morning potential disruptions could be expected at bart this morning due to protestors. so right now though 19 trains are on time no delays. most of mass transit is looking good and a live look at the bay bridge, so far, so good. let's hope it stays that
