but some areas can expect 7 inches or more and substantial travel issues. the same travel system spread rain and snow to a large part of texas and new mexico yesterday. in the houston area up to 4 inches of rain flooded streets and stranded cars. the storm toppled trees and power lines, but dry weather is forecast for today. in amarillo, as much as a foot of snow fell yesterday. that's a record. the storm forced city offices to close, and there were flight delays and cancellations. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the storm as it heads north. >> well, some pretty impressive snow last night across west texas. amarillo, a foot of snowfall. now it's a rainmaker. both the i-10 and i-20 corridors. could be some pockets of bigger thunderstorms especially in the florida panhandle. then it's friday night into saturday it becomes more of a snow event. the line lining up along i-95 as it almost always does. this storm as it deepens is going to race out to sea.

by the time it clears out saturday night, it's going to clear the coastline. for the southeast, heavy rain for much of the southeast and maybe even 4-inch rain totals along the median gulf coast. the snowy side, the big cities, d.c., philly, northern, boston, most seeing about 4 inches. the heavy amounts will be north of the cities. they're running well below average. none of them have seen 6 inches of snow for the entire winter up to this point. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for the cbs news. well, the deadline to pay ransom for the lives of two japanese hostages held by the islamic state has come and gone. their fate remains unknown. this morning a countdown video appeared online showing a clock and images of other hostages who have been beheaded. one mother pled for a hostages life yesterday. they said he would be killed

unless they were paid $200 million. and the department in yemen will be holding a meeting sunday. the president hadi quit yesterday days after they broke into his palace. the houthi rebels backed by iran control the capital. he was an american ally in the fight against al qaeda. his government also resigned. the staff at the u.s. embassy has been reduced. just north of yemeni saudi arabia's king abdullah will be buried today. he died yesterday. he was 90 years old. the saudis are one of the world's top world exporters and an ally in the fight against al qaeda. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. king abdullah died early today after ruling saudi arabia for nearly two decades during which the u.s. became its number one ally. thousands of pilgrims mourned the death of king abdullah in mecca.

as ruler of an oil-rich nation, the king was among the wealthiest men in the world. he worked to modernize saudi arabia, give more freedom to women, and was a strong u.s. ally in the battle against al qaeda. president obama visited the ailing leader last march. he issued a statement expressing his condolences and said i always valued king abdullah and valued our relationship and friendship. george bush recalled fond visits with him. the monarch did not always push. he wanted stronger u.s. support for sunni rebels fighting in syria. the white house says vice president biden will lead a u.s. delegation to saudi arabia in the coming days to pay respects to the king's family. king abdullah's half brother salman immediately succeeded him. the 79-year-old had been performing many of his

the plan would reduce the tax benefits of future contributions to the 529 savings plans. currently money from the 529 plans can be withdrawn without paying capital gains taxes as long as it's used for education. current accounts would be grandfathered. existing funds could still grow and be withdrawn tax-free. stocks on wall street closed higher after the european central bank announced an aggressive stimulus program. the dow surged 259 points. the s&p finished 31 points higher. the nasdaq gained 82 points. u. last year apple's ceo tim cook was paid $9.2 million. that is more than double what he made in 2013. over $6.5 million of his compensation was incentive-based. apple stock has risen since cook uncovered the larger iphones and
