cities from washington to boston are bracing for extreme conditions that include heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding. some areas could see between 2 and 3 feet of snow, a 250-mile stretch of the northeast is under a blizzard warning. southwest airlines is canceling more than 130 flights scheduled today. united airlines plans to cancel all northeastern flights tomorrow. other carriers could do the same. thousands of flights are at risk. susan mcginnis is in montgomery county, maryland. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. the mild winter the northeast has been enjoying is about to change dramatically. here at this salt depot, trucks have been immobilizing all night long for the storm that's expected later today and tomorrow. elsewhere folks are preparing for a blizzard. forecasters are telling millions of people in the northeast to get ready for one of the worst winter storms in years.

blizzard warnings are posted from eastern new england down to the jersey shore. >> blizzard warnings meaning you're going to have winds consistently gusting or sustained at 35 miles an hour and invisibility for a quarter of a mile for several hours. >> reporter: new york city mayor bill de blasio says the storm could be among the biggest the city haas ever seen. >> projections for this storm, that it would easily be as much as 2 feet of snow potentially pushing on closer to 3 feet of snow. >> reporter: many people spent the weekend stocking up and boarding up. >> i'd much rather be doing it now when the sun's up than tomorrow afternoon when i think it may have been a good idea. >> reporter: with all the snow and the wind in the forecast this storm is expected to paralyze travel despite efforts to pretreat roads and get plows ready. crews in washington, d.c., and maryland have thousands of pounds of salt standing by and extra tow trucks. >> we're prepared for anything that hits us. >> reporter: air travel is also

expected to be snowed in. at least 2,000 flights have already been canceled and many more could follow when the heavy snow arrives. now, it's still a big question mark which areas might be hit the hardest and which ones may dodge the bullet, but the total number of people affected, lauren, could be as many as 60 million. >> wow. susan mcginnis in montgomery county-month-old-month-old maryland, thank you. millions along the east coast are doing what they can as you saw. eric fisher maps out when to expect the worst. >> well, so far there's been a winter without a blockbuster storm. not going to be the case as we head into tomorrow and certainly through the day on tuesday. big corridor. winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings in effect for all of eastern new england including boston. the entire state of connecticut and down the jersey shore. that means whiteout conditions

are possible as the storm really takes shape heading into monday evening. so i think you're going to want to be home by 5:00 at the latest. this is when the storm really starts to develop and fill in. you can see a huge band of very heavy snowfall rates. some significant snow down into filly and it's going to last for a while. the storm sits and spins and doesn't wind down until wednesday. so many folks will see snow for 36 miles an hour. wind gusts, over 30 miles per hour across interior parts of the northeast. 40-plus in place like hartford and over toward boston. boston and southeast, 50 mile-an-hour plus winds. there are the snow totals. big corridor of 1 to 2 feet, but locally a few places may see 3 feet of snow from this blizzard. i'm meteorologist eric fisher with cbs news. be safe with this. power is returning to southern california this morning after a week of strong santa ana winds. trees and power lines crashed down onto homes and cars. gusts reached 89 miles an hour. winds were strong enough to take

down a billboard. power outages affected more than 54,000 customers in the los angeles area. most power has been restored. a warm welcome on a soggy day for president obama and the first lady in india. they arrived this morning at a parade to celebrate india's democracy. the trip is an effort to strengthen ties and make progress in a nuclear deal, but conflicts near the region are overshadowed breakthroughs in the policy. major garrett has a recap of the president's trip so far. >> reporter: president obama arrived to new delhi in his presidency eager to work with the deal. the biggest breakthrough and understanding between the white house and the prime minister narendra modi on future sales of nuclear material and shielding of nuclear power plants from financial lienlt in caseability in

case of an accident. but events in ukraine and yemen largely overshadow the symbolism of the state visit. on ukraine where renewed attacks and bloodshed by russian-backed separatists have sparked alarm in washington and europe, the president said the u.s. will continue applying economic pressure. >> i will look at all additional options that are available to us short of military conflict and try to address this issue. mr. obama said the u.s. would continue covert operations between al qaeda in peninsula where it's based there. >> it is not neat and it is not simple, but it is the best option that we have. >> reporter: the president laid a wreath at the national memorial of gandhi attended a state presidential dinner at the palace, and watched a dach with the first lady. >> that was major garrett.

now, president obama will leave india tomorrow and travel to saudi arabia to visit the royal family following the death of king abdullah. those conflicts in ukraine and yemen have spurred emergency meetings today for the united security council. the group has failed to take action since the ukrainian issue broke out because of the russian influsence on the panel. voters in greece, meanwhile, are cheering for change this morning. they've elected a new leader to get their country's finances in order but as charlie d'agata shows us, greece's future with the european union is still in question. >> reporter: it's been a while since the greeks have had anything to celebrate, but the voters have spoken and their message, enough is enough with the austerity measures. people are fed up, said georgios cosmos. they're hungry literally hungry. i'm 72 years old, and all i have in my pocket is seven euros.

the elected leader alexis sir pras tsipras leave behind the austerity measures. in the past four years greece has been in the grips of violent protests. tens of thousands of jobs lost, pensions slashed, and an unemployment rate of more than 25%, double that for young people. most of that anger was aimed at germany, the driving force of a european bailout deal that forced greece to clean up its act, however painful. some protesters went so far to compare german chancellor angel a la merkel and her german countrymen to nazis. now tsipras is promising to tear up that bailout deal. but it's a risky gain. greece could face bankruptcy and

it raises the prospect once again of greece dumping out of the european currency the euro. the new prime minister will meet with rieng wing leaders today to form a coalition government. meanwhile back in the u.s. this morning, the fbi is investigating a series of threats to airlines over the weekend. two planes in seattle were evacuated sunday when they landed including this jetblue plane. a delta flight from los angeles to orlando was diverted to dallas. airport spokesmen only cited security concerns. the fbi says at least two threats originated online. agents are looking into whether they're connected. a huge asteroid will fly past earth tonight. the asteroid measures about a third of a mile in diameter. it will be within 745,000 miles of earth. that's about three times farther away than the moon. you can see it, though, with binoculars or a small telescope. coming up on the "morning news," japan's hostage crisis. new efforts to save a captive

hong kong's hang seng added a fraction. here on wall street, investors start up a new week following lower numbers on friday. the dow lost 141 points. the s&p fell 11 points. the nasdaq gained 7 points. president obama wants to stop oil and gas drilling in a huge section of alaska. the president will ask congress to designate 12 million acres of alaska's wildlife refuge as a protected area. alaska's republican lawmakers say that would damage their state's economy. gasoline prices fell again over the last two weeks. the lumberg survey says prices fell 13 cents to $2.07 a gallon per regular. that's $1.24 lower than this time last year. cyber security experts are warning verizon wireless is putting the privacy of its customers at risk.

"the new york times" reports that the problem is with verizon wireless wireless's computer codes that's used to tag and follow subscribers around the web. they say it could make customers vulnerable to tracking and have their identities revealed. and "american sniper" wins big again at the box office. it was number one for a second weekend in a row with more than $64 million. the official website for malaysia airlines was hacked this morning by a group that claims to support islamic state militants. the hackers call themselves lizard squad. official cyber caliphate. they changed the website to show a pi of a lizard. malaysia airlines says data remains secured. the company is still recovering from two disasters last year. last week american and cuban officials held the highest level talks in decades. there were no major breakthroughs, but manuel bojorquez did find these signs of progress in the streets. >> reporter: in a country accustomed to keeping old models running and even older buildings standing, we discovered computer repair is no different.
