it has not chosen to define that. >> correct . >> so it has taught but n way. >> this is a topic we have been talking about for a long time. the true presence of jesus. >> i think this is an enormous challenge in american society. i see many young people, they are good catholics they don't get the understanding of it. >> part of it, you got to kneel down and you got to be focused
5:09 am
on christ. that's the ancient and current teaching of the church. >> hell and purgatory. >> it has never said anyone is in h in the new testament it says who are you to say that's good or bad. that's god's decision alone. the reason it is so important is hell means i truly have free choice and i can choose not to love god. i am not compelled that's the way he made us and that's the whole point of the story of adam and eve. >> free will. >> purgatory means that if you are going to be in heaven you cannot have all these faults. you cannot say oh, i like chris there is a lot of problem.
5:10 am
>> purgatory is the taking away of that, purifying us. >> the priesthood. people maybe confuse in this. there are two types of priesthood . me, i am a priest, those priests serving others. there is also the priesthood which has been taught by the church. in baptism right after you pour the water on the baby's head or the adult's head, and you say to the person that you are free, prophet and king. it cannot be done without the priest but everyone participates in that sacrifice. >> beautiful, thank you. >> that's a good one. >> we talk about life bu beliefs of life of the
5:11 am
conception. >> right the church--all of these are supported by science. once you have the dna, the church's position is once a woman conceived, if you don't intervene and there is no unusual events, that's going to result in the human's life. everything is programmed by god. this is going to be a person and it is going develop in a baby and we have to respect that. >> uh-huh. >> last one before the break. >> chasity. it applies to everybody, you and me. it means that you look at the other person as a child of god as complete not just how pretty she is or whether the guy is handsome or what type of clothes they wear. this is a child of
5:12 am
god made in the image and enlighten of god. we have all these sexual abilities we don't use them until the appropriate marriage like in marriage or someone is single, they don't use them at all. when they interact with another man or woman, all of that comes into place. >> sure. >> and chasidy is living out. >> we'll take a break and we'll talk more with father john on more of the teaching of catholic faith. you are watching "mosiac", we'll be right back.
5:15 am
welcome backmosiac". we are talking about briefly touching on the essence of some of the basic catholic teachings. so we have gone through a lot father there is some other ones. how d swaelty. there is they're often misunderstood. >> the basic notion is a man and woman coming together in marriage should be opened to the gift of life. it is something given by god and they should be open to the pa marriage ps and they are open to that. yes, they can be intimate with each other at times or most likely the woman will get pregnant. in that situation sometimes you have to be open to life so it is this openness that we emphasize.
5:16 am
>> that's a great emphasis. >> there is so much we can talk about again. okay, here is homosexual acts. >> act belongs on a certain context. homosexual act should not occur that's not the way our bodies are made for that. one can understand a man having an attraction for another man and wanting to become in some way intimate. it is not possible that you can be intimate in the way a couple can be in hetero sexuals. our bodies are made for males and females.
5:17 am
>> aspects of the gift of human sexualities and certainly more we can talk about here. i urge you to study more of the body and find out more of the why of many of these things. let's talk about the church's ministry and the differentiation of homosexual orientation. >> that orientation can be disordered but the church is still accepting the person as a child of god and a full member of the church. there is no attempt to push the person outside. what the church says is though, you cannot act on that and of course, many unfortunately, many of our gays
5:18 am
and lesbians, they want the inclination and attractions should be bound to action. . that is not the inclination is quite distinct from the act itself. now, i want to speak about the inclination and the church says that's disordered. i would say for our modern society, for most young people anyway maybe not everyone. but, most young people, their attitudes towards h sexualities are all disordered. >> they are always thinking of the sexual components of it, the physical part, why is she so attracted to me or why am i attracted to him. it is going for one very component of the human person. the church is saying we have to look at
5:19 am
ourselves complete in other people as these complicated individuals and who we have to explore. i should not identify myself as gay or i should not identify myself as hetero sexual. >> uh-huh. >> i am a human person and i am trying to get to know other people. the catholic's perspective is healing remedy to the over sexualized nature of our culture. >> exactly. thank you. kind of leading to the next one that we are alled called to chasidy. >> we have to look at the other person as someone w in down with gifts who we can relate to and we don't act and initially
5:20 am
and ultimately in a way that's appropriate with my commitment. if it is my wife or husband even for a wife or husband they cannot be looking at a--a guy cannot be married and looki other women and looking at photos and stuff like that. that would be against chasidy. >> yes and again looking with a positive regard and wishing the best for the other person rather than taking which is sort of a love verses lust. >> this is not even going into the area of pornography. we are just talking about people who are married who the guy is interested in this other girl and she's really cute and

5:24 am
christ loving the church and his body. that image is love of a man and a woman. that love of a man and woman is supposed to remind us of the love of christ for his church. it is also an an agreement sort of a contract. that's the way the church understands it. in order--the reason why there is annulment, in order for it to be a true contract you have to fully intend to be promised to be married to this man or woman until death parts us. you have to do this freely. you cannot do this with a gun to your head. >> yeah. >> you know freedom is important. >> wonderful the covenant aspect of marriage. now, marriage and civil law why the church is strong about the perspective there? >> well, in the united states
5:25 am
now, every minister or catholic priest acts on behalf of the government. you register with the government and as you know the married couples bring the certificate with them and to sign that and they get the official certificate again. the church is the official church witness but it is also the witness of the state. >> uh-huh. >> now because there are so many people who are changing their understanding of marriage and the definition of marriage, there are priests and ministers who are saying, we should change this. we should get out of the business of being official of the state. we should separate. it has happened in europe. there are a number of catholics in the europe and this has been true for decades. if you want
5:26 am
to get married you go to city hall first and you get them to stamp this thing and as far as the government is concerned you are officially married and the church is concerned you are not married. you >> you consummate your marriage. >> the church's wedding is distinct from it and the good thing about that is our concept of marriage, tradition marriage is different from what civil unions are becoming nowadays. >> something that we are looking into now. >> last topic reproductive activity technology and what the church believes about that and human cloning. >> the church is certainly very sympathetic, there are many women who want to have children and they have tried and it is not working. so they are inclined to think well, i am
5:27 am
going to get the baby and inseminate outside the whomb. the way that happens is usually there are many eggs that are inseminated and only one that's used. that's the primary reason. the secondary reason why they are against it, you can think of it as a medical procedure, this should be happy as a result of a loving act and not as a surgical act or medical act and the church insists on that and you can see how important that is in our society. >> yeah, thank you what a great explanation for such a huge topic. now, i am going to ask you folks to if you want to hear or see what the church believes, just a little section of cloning, you can go to our website where all of these listed of what we believe.
5:28 am
we'll be developing that as the week goes by. i appreciate father just able to go through giving a little bit of antidote of one of these things. >> i am delighted that we have so much up on the website and we'll be expanding it. >> well, you have been watching "mosiac" thank you very much, until next time, god bless.
