this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, february 2nd, 2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. after a tumultuous season filled with on and off the field controversies, the national football league did what id did best sunday. they treated football fans to one of the most exciting super bowls and added a championship game for the quarterback and his coach ended up making his. the patriots tom brady was looking to become only the third quarterback after joe montana and terry bradshaw to win four super bowls, but he was up against the defending champions seattle seahawks and their boon secondary. >> at the 5 yard line jeremy lane still on the run. >> scoreless in the first brady drives the pat downs the field for a seven-point read. russell wasson did complete a pass until midway through the

second quarter, but he found his touch with this long completion to chris matthews. that set up beast mode marshawn lynch for the tie. >> touchdown. >> right before the half, brady finds rob gronkowski for the 14-7 lead, but that left russell wilson with 39 seconds to work with, and he made them pay. again, it's matthews, this time for the score and they were tied for 14 at the half. ♪ i've got the eye of the tiger ♪ >> the fireworks during the halftime show were led by katy perry who came in on a giant golden tiger. in the second half, the seahawks came alive. first with a field goal and later wilson to doug baldwin to put seattle up by 24-14. >> to the left, wide open, touchdown. >> but in the fourth quarter brady showed why he's a champion. he finds danny amendola to make it a three-point game. then right before the two-minute

warning it's brady to join edelman who put the patriots in front, 28-24. with two minutes to play wilson throws up a prayer to jermaine kearse who does a jugglinging at on his back. the game came down to this. with just seconds to play and everyone looking for marshawn lynch up the middle wilson forces one and it's picked off by wilson butler. >> intercepted by the goal line. >> i just didn't want to be the reason or part of the reason that we lost this game. >> game over. brady and belichick win their fourth super bowl. brady sets the record for career super bowl touchdown passes and is named mvp. >> well, bients ait's been a long journey. i've been at it for a couple of years. this came down to the end. >> we've had a good football game. i'm so proud of all these players. i love these guys. >> seattle head coach pete carroll is coming under intense criticism for his decision to call a pass on the goal line

. after the game he took responsibility for the interception that sealed the victory for new england. this morning a major winter storm packing heavy snow and freezing rain haas moved from the midwest into the northeast. it's the largest storm of the season stretching from nebraska to maine. the slow moving storm blanketed chicago in blizzard conditions. brian webb is here in new york. good morning, brian. >> alison one week after the blizzard in new york city, round two comes along with a lot more snow and a lot less panic. the chicago area was buried under more than a foot of snow as the winter storm moved through the area sunday. the snow grounded more than a thousand flights at both of chicago's airports leaving travelers stranded. >> they can't get us back out until tuesday, so we're kind of hoping that we can get out sooner than later. >> reporter: in parts of indiana heavy snow and strong winds made drives dangerous. it was the same scene in ohio.

the weather system stretch over a massive part of the u.s. from nebraska to maine, and fraflters say it's moving unusually slow. yesterday people in boston stocked up on essentials. they were pounded with almost 25 inches of snow. in new york city up to 6 inches of snow is expected along with a wintry mix. >> the biggest threat in this case would be ice. we would expect a lot of icing on our roads and sidewalks, up to a quarter inch of ice in some places. >> reporter: mayor bill de blasio was among those criticized last week for shutting down the city when less than 10 inches of snow fell. unlike last time the city will stay open for business. so by the time the storm moves on, new york city could have 16 inches of snow on the ground, boston more like 40. alison, the total number of flights canceled is quickly reaching 2,300. >> wow. brian webb here in new york. thank you. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says

there's bitter cold following all the snow. >> we've been tracking the storm since the weekend moving its way across the plains, now working toward the northeast. a long line of winter storm warnings in effect. a lot of places that have just gone over a large blizzard last week. so we're watching this move not from south to north but west to east sliding its way across new york city into the boston area as well as albany, new york. not just snow but a mix of some ice could be an issue in and around new york and around southern new england. we'll have to watch that for the monday morning drive. in terms of snow totals, an impressive band of numbers. much of new york and interior new england looking at a foot of total snow up. that will bring many towns up to 50 inches in nine days, and entire winter's worth in a little over a week. the cold back in action out the door as we head monday evening into tuesday morning, subzero windchills making a comeback. i'm meteorologist eric fisher, cbs news.

there's outrage and numbing sensation for japan as a video shows the beheading of kenji goto. he was captured in october. isis killed another japanese hostage the week before. japan says it is firmly committed to fighting terrorism. peter was released and deported sunday but two al jazeera colleagues remain behind bars. were arrested in 2014 for reporting on the crackdown of the military overthrow of the president. president obama signs the first $4 trillion budget. it includes higher taxes on wealthy americans and an ambitious program. the proposals have already triggered stiff opposition from republicans who control congress. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> alison, good morning. this is the president's spending plan for 2016. it includes an overhaul of the

u.s. tax system and a $60 million program for free community college tuition. the president calls it middle-class economics. the republicans have another name. >> what i think the president is try dog is again, exploit economics. he's coming one a program to repair the highways and businesses over the next six years. half of the money would come from a one-time tax on corporate profits now stashed abroad. the white house said companies are keepinging $2 trillion in profits overseas in order to avoid paying the high corporate tax rate. the president wants to cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 28%. that is something republicans have supported. >> we want to look and work with this administration to see if we can find common ground and we want to exhaust that possibility.

>> it includes a mix of tax increases on the nation's wealthiest including an interest on capital gains rates on couples making more than $500,000 a year. the president wants to use the money to help faye pay for middle-class tax breaks and proposals like expanded child care. in an interview with nbc news before the super bowl, the president said he's willing to listen to the republicans. if they have a better idea they should present it, but my job is not to trim my sails and not tell them what i'm doing. changes. the two sides do need to come to an agreement because the president's signature needs for it to be on this budget for it to become law. >> susan mcginnis is in washington. thank you. coming on the "morning news" drawing the battle lines in the fight against measles. pediatricians struggle with families who do not vaccinate

president obama is adding his voice to the vaccination debate. he's urging parents to get children immunized as the measles outbreak surges to more than 100 cases. carter evans shows us how the medical community is struggling to respond. >> reporter: dr. margaret van blerk is a pediatrician in orange county, california, home to 27 confirmed cases of measles and one of the largest groups of unvaccinated children in the state. >> it's just frustrating that they don't listen. they come to us to take care of their children, and yet they don't trust us. >> reporter: now her practice is on the verge of dropping patients whose parents refuse to immunize. >> we're probably not going to see them anymore. >> i feel their pain but that won't stop the epidemic if you exclude children. >> reporter: dr. kenneth bromberg is with the american

academy of pediatrics. >> we want to work with families, and there are other ways to protect children other than excluding those families. >> reporter: he says pediatricians could create separate office hours for children whose parents won't vaccinate to isolate them from other patients. but pediatrician charles goodman says it's not that simple. what would happen if a patient infected with measles were to come into your office? >> it would be a disaster. i would have to call the health department. it would close our office down. everybody in there would have to be quarantined for a time. >> reporter: he said babies too young to receive the vaccine are especially at risk. >> it's so contagious they could give the babies measles and they could die. >> as a physician we take the hippocratic oath. the first is to do no harm and by bringing in patients who are not vaccinated we're harming our other patients who depend on us to keep them healthy. >> reporter: some doctors feel

on the "cbs moneywatch," an oil worker strike in some of last night's memorable super bowl ads. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, alison. asian marks finished mostly lower on weak manufacturing numbers from china. tokyo's nikkei lost half a percent. hong kong's hang seng lost a fraction. here on wall street traders are glad to see the end of january. uncertainty over the price of oil sent stocks markedly lower. the dow lost 500 points at the end of the month. the s&p finished 56 points lower and the nasdaq lost 122 points for the week. the price of oil dropped again this morning after workers at nine shell oil refineries walked off the job. united steelworkers called the strike, which is the largest of u.s. refineries since 1980. nearly 4,000 workers mostly in california and texas walked off

the job at midnight. the union rejected shell's fourth contract offer. shell is serving as the lead company in national oil talks. well, the former chief of the international monetary fund dominique strauss-kahn goes on trial this morning in france on sex charges. he was once considered a top presidential candidate in france. he's accused of being involved in a prostitution ring in france. he also resigned from the imf in 2011 when he was accused of sexually assaulting a u.s. hotel made. another box office record for "american sniper." it made nearly $32 million. the biggest super bowl weekend gross ever. it has now made nearly $249 million in six weeks making it the most lucrative war movie without adjusting for inflation. the animated "paddington" came in a distant second. it was in a have itual tile with the time traveling thriller "project almanac."

and finally super bowl sponsors went for the heart strings. they made emotional and at times serious pitches to football fans. budweiser ad features a lost puppy and the buyer maker's signature clydesdales horses. it seemed to be a hit. always feminine products are in praise with this commercial urging viewers to reconsider what it means to do things like a girl. the ad was one of the most popular of the night on social media. meanwhile nationwide insurance seemed to miss the mark. its ad meant to encourage discussion about preventable childhood accidents but it sparked an online backlash. billed at $4.5 million for 30 seconds, probably better than not being noticed at all. alison? >> i'm quite sure we do not run like girls. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thank you, jill. when we return, trouble for the daughter of whitney houston. reaction news that bobbi kristina brown is hospitalized after being found unconscious. if it doesn't work fast...d
