a layer of snow blankets the northeast postponing a super bowl celebration in boston while another storm is threatening more wintry weather by the end of the week. the vaccine debate gets political as the measles outbreak grows. some people running for the white house weigh in on whether they should vaccinate. losing friends. why one group is leaving facebook behind. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, february 3rd, 2015. good morning, i'm alison alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning the massive storm that left a heavy trail of snow from the plains to the northeast is moving off the atlantic coast. the storm left a blanket of snow from washington state to new

england where the snow continued to fall overnight. ten storm-related deaths were reported from the midwest to the northeast. some areas got over a foot of snow and there's snow cover as far south as new mexico. the storm has disrupted travel. since sunday more than 7300 flights have been canceled nationwide. that includes more than 500 today. it snowed overnight in maine where winter storm warnings are in effect until this morning. some new england coastal areas got up to a foot and a half of snow. that includes parts of boston which set a record for the snowiest seven day period in the city's history. kris van cleve is in boston where it's postponed a big super bowl celebration. >> reporter: the super bowl champions new england patriots touched down at logan airport monday night. their parade was sacked by another snowstorm. it's set for wednesday. >> i feel like i'm in the north pole. it's crazy. >> reporter: boston was one of the last stops for the huge winter storm which dumped heavy

snow from the midwest to maine. detroit reported its third biggest snowfall on record and chicago received the fifth heaviest. >> this has been a snowstorm for the record books and we're seeing a record response as well. >> reporter: after getting hit by two major snow events in a week, the focus here in boston is on getting all of this snow out of the streets city wide. schools are closed again here tuesday as the city tries to dig itself out. >> we're asking people if you can't stay off the roads, try and take public transportation as best you can and allow us the opportunity to clean the streets. >> reporter: and there's incentive to get that done quickly. another storm is brewing that forecasters say could turn into a nor'easter bringing heavy snow to the midwest and northeast by thursday. and spring is nowhere in sight. kris van cleave, cbs news boston. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is telling people to prepare for the bitter cold that will follow the storm. >> behind the storm we have the

cold, really cold out the door here for our tuesday morning. subzero wind chills from the midwest into the northeast, especially northern new england. 20 to 30 below zero with some of those wind chills. heading towards the evening, coming home on tuesday night, still mainly in the single digits to around zero. very cold air here to kick off the month of february but that's the northeast and the midwest. check out the plains. 61 degrees in midland for a high. 58 in denver. that's way up above average. 76 in phoenix. a lot of mild air especially in the southwest and out into the plains where temperatures are running way above the average. then we look toward our next storm. the next storm is getting going quickly. wednesday and thursday an arctic front, rain in the southeast and late on thursday this moves to the coast. our next potential storm. it could be another nor'easter in a lot of the same spots that have dealt with a lot of wintry weather over the next few days. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. this forecast is even more biting.

jimmy the ground hog nipped the ear of the mayor of wisconsin. jimmy who disagrees with most of his ground hog brethren says spring will come early this year. more than a dozen infants in southern california are under quarantine after a baby at their day care center came down with measles. the day care center at santa monica high school is closed after the infant was diagnosed. all of the children are unvaccinated because they're under the age of 1. since december more than 100 people in 14 states have been diagnosed with the highly contagious disease. the centers for disease control says the majority of measles patients are unvaccinated and now the debate over vaccinations are getting political. brian webb here in new york with more. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, alice alison. now presidential candidates are weighing in on whether parents should have a choice on vaccinating their children. on a three-day trip to england many say is meant to solidify

his foreign policy credentials, new jersey governor chris christie is set to clarify statements relating to the growing measles outbreak in the u.s. while touring a facility that makes a flu vaccine, christie told reporters he thinks parents should have a choice in whether to vaccinate children. christie believes with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated. christie's sentiments were echoed by another potential candidate for the white house, republican senator rand paul said that most vaccines should be voluntary. >> i've heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with mental disorders after vaccines. i'm not arguing vaccines are a bad idea i think they're a good thing. parents should have input. the state doesn't own your children. >> reporter: his staff clarified saying all of the senator's

children were vaccinated. former secretary of state hillary clinton who might be eyeing the white house saw it as an opportunity to take a shot at the gop tweeting last night, the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccines work. let's protect all our kids #grandmothersknowbest. health experts strongly urge parents to vaccinate their children against childhood diseases especially measles. >> the science is clear. study after study has shown that there are no serious long-term adverse consequences from measles. of course it can hurt your arm. one in six kids can have a fever ten days after, but the vaccine is safe and effective. >> reporter: health experts also say that choosing not to vaccinate your child could put other children at risk. while new jersey where chris christie's governor mandates children receive measles vaccine, it is one of 20 states allowing parents to opt out of

vaccinations with a waiver. alison. >> that's brian webb here in new york. thank you, brian. president obama is on a collision course with congress over his proposed budget. republicans say the record $4 trillion spending blueprint is a nonstarter. the plan raises taxes on corporations and the wealthy while boosting tax credits for families and the working poor. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: alison good morning. republicans are calling the bulk of this budget more of the same failed policies that don't address the nation's long-term fiscal problems but when it comes to certain areas including defense and infrastructure, there are some glimmers of hope for agreement. >> we've got some fundamental choices to make about the kind of country we want to be. >> reporter: president obama sent a less than receptive congress a record $4 trillion budget monday that calls for a 7% increase in defense and domestic spending. the 2016 budget restores some automatic cuts triggered by a

2011 budget deal. >> i want to work with congress to replace mindless austerity with smart investments that strengthen america. >> reporter: his plan would raise defense spending to $585 billion with major investments in cyber security. it would be the highest defense spending in u.s. history with the lowest war spending since 2002. republicans here on capitol hill have already blasted part of the plan to hike taxes on the wealthy, to fund $277 billion in tax breaks. they say the president is resorting to tax and spend policies that haven't worked in the past. >> it is totally unacceptable for west virginians and all-americans to live within their means while the federal government continues to allow its spending and debt to run rampant. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell vowed they will work to pass the serious kind of budget that roots out and reforms wasteful spending. there are some areas where the president and republicans say

ground. it caused damage to homes and street signs but no one was hurt in the dirt storm. on the cbs "moneywatch," google may go bumper to bumper with ride hailing app uber. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: alison, uber is facing stiff competition from one of its big investors, google. google is preparing to offer its own ride sharing service likely to go along with the driverless car project it's been working on. uber's developing its own driverless vehicle. google invested $258 million in uber in august of 2013. stocks on wall street open higher this morning following a late surge in enflerge gi stocks. the dow gained 196 points. the s&p finished 25 points higher. the nasdaq rose 41 points. oil prices rose for the third day in a row. benchmark u.s. crude finished the day $1.33 higher at $49.57 a

barrel. that is the highest it's been in a month. the new york stock exchange plans to delist shares of the retailer radio shack. radio shack's been struggling and warned last year it may file for bankruptcy. news that it might not be able to find a long-term plan to stay afloat sent its stock price dramatically lower. shares fell 13% yesterday. we now have the final figures for the super bowl weekend box office and the take for "american sniper" has been revised down. originally it was estimated sniper brought in 39.9 million, a record but it turns out the clint eastwood film sold $30.7 million in tickets. that leaves 2008 hannah montana, miley cyrus, the best of both worlds, as the top earner against the nfl's big game. and papa john's pizza gets burned by a commercial. the popular chain aired

marley shows us what's causing the drift. >> reporter: she is so over facebook. she deactivated her profile. >> most of my friends were deleting it. >> reporter: an annual internet survey shows facebook use among teens dropped 6% last year. >> by far the largest decrease of any group using facebook currently. >> reporter: social media experts say the fact that moms dads and grandparents are on facebook makes teens less willing to share thoughts and photos on the site. >> facebook is more a utility like your electric bill. it's something you have to have. >> reporter: that's why after an eight month break eloise is back on in a limited way. >> the easiest way to communicate with my classmates. would he have a grade wyatt facebook page which is super helpful. >> reporter: facebook's drop is helping other social networks like snap chat and twitter gain ground. the photo based site instagram

saw a 25% jump in 13 to 17-year-olds last year. >> if you didn't instagram it it didn't happen. >> reporter: her younger sister is just 12 but is already social media savvy. do you ever think you'll get a facebook page? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: there is a silver lining. the social media giant also owns instagram. marlie hall, cbs news new york. strangers from around the country are sending money to help a detroit man who walks 21 miles round trip to and from work. so far more than $100,000 has been raised to help james robertson get transportation. he's had perfect attendance at work for 12 years despite having no car. a college student launched a go fund me page after a newspaper reported on robertson's daily trek. when we return it's the super bowl play everyone's still talking about. a record number of viewers watched the patriots' game-winning interception including late show host david

here is a look at toy's here is a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports the longest winning streak in the nba this season is over. the new orleans pelicans hand the atlanta hawks their first loss since december 26th. pelicans forward anthony davis scores 29 points in a 115-110 victory ending atlanta's string of 19 straight wins. cleveland browns quarterback johnny manziel is trying to change his hard partying lifestyle. the former heisman trophy winner announced monday he's been in a treatment program for unspecified reasons since last week. manziel had a disappointing rookie season for the browns after they selected him in the first round of the nfl draft.

a spokesperson says manziel is trying to be a better family member friend and teammate. a record number of viewers tuned into super bowl xlix. the neilson company said an estimated 114.4 million people watched new england top seattle on sunday. that's about 2 million more than last year's game making it the most watched tv event in u.s. history. viewership spiked to more than 120 million in the dramatic final moments of the game when defensive back malcolm butler sealed the win for new england with a goal-line interception. and seattle coach pete carroll has drawn intense criticism for his decision to call for a pass on that play. on last night's late show david letterman shared his list. >> number 10 forgot marshawn lynch was on the team. number 5 wanted to see bill belichick's dazzling smile. number 4 wind sheer. number 3, patriots cheated by having a better coach. number 2, we'll get 'em next

here's another look at this morning's top stories. boston is digging out from its second major snowstorm in a week. schools there are closed today and the super bowl parade has been delayed until tomorrow. the storm spread a blanket of heavy snow from the midwest to new england. another big snow maker may be headed up the atlantic coast later this week. president obama's record $4 trillion budget faces stiff opposition in the republican-controlled congress. it includes tax hikes totaling about $1.5 trillion. the academy awards are handed out in less than three weeks. on monday they gathered in beverly hills for a traditional luncheon. >> reporter: meet the class of 2015. the academy awards nominees
