this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, february 13th, 2015. good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning bone-rattling bitter cold grips an area from the upper midwest to england. this latest arctic surge promises to fill subzero windchills through the weekend. some will break cold records that have stood for decades. it stretches from the canadian border to the gulf coast. and meteorologist eric fisher from our boston station wbz says it's not just the cold to worry about. another punishing winter storm is on the way. >> well a very cold morning to end out the week. it could feel as cold as 35 below zero out the door. this is just the beginning. colder air is on the way this weekend. look at saturday's lows. 25 below at international falls, 4 below in chicago. teens getting down all the way into nashville. as we look at the high temps on

friday, the cold air is in the northeast. frigid air. a few places will stay below zero. by sunday we're looking at 30s and 40s in the southeast. the florida panhandle looking at potential freezes and single didn'ts into the northeast and with that another huge storm. we've got blizzard watches out for much of down east maine and along the coast. this is where we get a combination of heavy snow and wind that starts to pick um on valentine's day. it picks up on sunday. that's where we see the strongest winds. a foot of snow in boston, bangor, places have already shattered records for snow in the last few weeks. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. residents of cape cod are preparing for this weekend's storm. beside the snow cold and strong surfs with high winds as high as 65 miles an hour. flooding is also possible. areas have been hit by impressive storms. in boston where the frustration is as high as snow, more is

possible this weekend. so far 78.5 inches have fallen there compared to the average snowfall this time of year 27 inches. bess romano of our boston station wbz says there's so much snow, they can't keep up. >> reporter: how many ways to remove snow in boston. front end loaders and crews from connecticut. the national guard hitting the neighborhoods, and two giant snow melters borrowed from new york. this one melting 50 tons an hour at a snow farm in boston. >> you can't see anybody. they can't walk around. you can't drive around. somebody's got do something about this. >> reporter: boston is trying to import help from anywhere, especially with another storm on the horizon. >> people are jumping out from behind snow banks -- actually they're ice glaciers now. we're looking at how we take down those snow banks. >> reporter: snow banks so high remooshl crews can barely pile it higher. they're working the intersections so cars can see

into the street and pedestrians can see them. >> it's hard. it's like an obstacle course over here. you have to cross further into the street so that makes it difficult. >> reporter: even removing it is challenging. >> the traffic. the foot traffic and people driving. especially around rush hour, it was pretty crazy. >> how long does it take for ech intersection? >> depending on the size of the snow bank i would say maybe an hour or two. >> reporter: and with snow farms near capacity, boston is looking for more space, which will keep the operators working around the clock. there's even greater urgency heading into the weekend and every bit helps. >> you have to be careful. you have to take it slow. it's been pretty slow. >> that was wbz's bess germano reporting. they're still considering whether to shut down public transportation tomorrow night. the president will announce his plans during a summit at

stanford university. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> good morning, alison. the president has made combatting cyber crime a pry kwort for his second term and today he will push the industry to cooperate more with the white house on stopping sider attacks. president obama is in silicon valley this morning for a white house summit on consumer protection where he'll make good on pledges he made at the state of the union. >> no foreign nation, no hacker should be able to shut down our network, steal our trade secrets or invade the privacy of american families. >> dozens of ceos including tim cook will talk how the private sector can work together to prevent cyber attacks. as part of it the president will offer an executive order. it will create private sector hubs where data can be exchanged easily. the department of homeland

security will oversea the exchange. the framework includes strong privacy protections. >> the president is going to be speaking with a large number of ceos of major american corporations who, i believe, are going to commit themselves to taking specific concrete actions to improve the cyber security postures of their individual organizations. >> calls to step up cyber security have grown following several major attacks, including one involving sony pictures and the most recent anthem health insurance hack that compromised personal information of millions of americans. the president has set aside $4 million in his budget to boost cyber security. now, three notable ceos will not be present today. that of facebook, google, and yahoo!. now, reportedly they are snubbing the white house, sending security executives instead. it's said to be an illustration of a souring relationship

between silicon valley and the white house, alison, after allegations of government spying. >> thank you, susan. the defense department has approved treatments. manning formerly known as bradley is receiving a gender reassignment. documents claim she was at high risk for suicide unless they helped to focus on treatments for her transition. three muslims were remembered thursday on the campus of north carolina state university. as vicente arenas reports many felt they were targeted because of their religion. >> reporter: the massive crowds that came to mourn made it clear that muslims here female a bubbling tide of resentment that has boiled over. >> they were just three innocent souls.

she was a friend of the murdered couple. >> so more than just a dispute. >> definitely. definitely more than a parking spot. definitely a hate crime. >> reporter: she joined the pray ir prayers as the caskets carried the three victims were carried across the soccer field on the university. mohammad is the father. >> i have talked to lawyers and professors. craig stephen hicks allegedly shot the three victims on tuesday night, but the police have said they believe the shooting happened over a dispute about a parking space outside the building where the suspect lives. police stood with muslim leaders and said they continue investigating every angle, including whether a hate crime was committed. it has gained worldwide media attention.

"new york times" david carr is being remembered as one of the leaders. he died last night in his office at the "times." in addition to his popular business he wrote a memoir on drug addiction. hours before his death carr moderated a forum with nsa leaker and wednesday he was a guest on "cbs this morning" to talk about brian williams' suspension from nbc news. david carr was 58 years old. we have an update this morning on the tragic death of our colleague, "60 minutes" correspondent bob simon. police in new york say now he was not wearing a seatbelt when he was killed in a car crash on wednesday. simon was a passenger in a lincoln town car that hit another vehicle and then slammed into a metal traffic barrier. seatbelts with not required by law. you can see a report on his for ebola. you can see it on 7:00 eastern,

6:00 p.m. pacific. on "cbs moneywatch," a car watch and "fifty shades of grey" takes a hit from protesters. good morning, jill. >> good morning, alison. the national highway traffic safety administration say automakers issued over 800 crawls. gh had the most recalls, 84 totally over 27 vehicles and faulty airbags caused the most recalls for any auto parts. well, big gains by energy and technology stocks pushed wall street to near record levels. the dow gained 110 points. the s&p finished nearly 20 points higher within two points of its record close. and the nasdaq ended the day 56 points higher. the online travel industry continues to consolidate. expedia is buying online travel site orbitz.

it also has brands like cheap tickets and hotel clubs. its expedia's latest. in january expedia acquired another rival travelocity. for all intents and purposes an ongoing labor dispute will shut down west coast ports until tuesday. the ports were closed yesterday. terminal companies didn't call workers to unload ships. contract talks between dockworkers and contract workers hit an impasse. all but paurlizing 29 points that handle about one-quarter of the u.s. international trade. president obama is creating a buzz. the president teamed up with "buzzfeed" to make a video urging people to sign up for health care. mr. obama vamps in front of a mirror sticks out his tongue uses a selfie stick, and draws a

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. chicago's jackie robinson west little league team is working to restore the national title that it was stripped of this week. team officials have highed an attorney. he's planning to look into whether they unfairly singled out the team for investigation. they found that the team used ineligible players. on thursday chicago mayor rahm emanuel asked little league international to restore the title. >> i said you're actually tomb teaching the kids unfortunately

a pennsylvania family had to choose whether the murderer of a loved one should live or die. in america that decision is usually left up to a jury but as anna werner reports, this case was heard under islamic law. >> reporter: jennifer moved to qatar to teach kindergarten in september 2012. two months later she was dead. authorities say she was murdered in her apartment by a security guard who worked in her building. trisha and jenheather are jennifer's sisters. >> two years later, and it's still really hard to imagine that this did happen. >> reporter: the guard reportedly confessed, but the trial was continually delayed. then a few weeks ago came a

development they never expected. a qatari judge hearing the case asked them to decide what punishment the man should face if convicted. >> i was shocked, and i didn't even consider that they would take the family's wishes into consideration like that. >> reporter: one option they were given was a reduced sentence for the alleged killer in exchange for blood money of $56,000. >> it was very insulting that they would think we would consider that after what he has taken from us. >> reporter: the next question was harder to answer. did they want him to get the death penalty. so you potentially have the power to spare this man's life or to put him to death. what is that like? >> difficult. it's a real hard decision. >> for either of you, was there a feeling at all, a moment of wanting revenge? i mean he killed your sister.
