boston is about to set the record for its snowiest month ever recorded. those records go back to 1891, and we're only halfway through the month. after two of the biggest snowstorms ever in the past three weeks, another blizzard is forecast for this weekend. how's this for snowfall-- in boston gets more than 10 inches, as predicted, it will have seen more snow in the past three weeks than chicago has ever seen in an entire winter. they simply don't know where to put any more in boston, leaving mountains of snow in the boston area. check out this campus shot in what are being called "the alps of m.i.t. and now here comes some more. jericka duncan begins our coverage. >> reporter: snow removal continues in and around boston due to record-setting snow that has fallen over the last three weeks. empty parking lots have become snow farms, and workers arel still shoveling off school roofs to avoid collapse.la the city is getting help from surrounding states that have

loaned out more than 150 pieces of equipment, including giant snow melters to help clear snow- clogged streets. governor charlie baker warned people to stay home sunday to s avoid blowing snow and plows. >> folks should be finishing up their preparations tonight in anticipation that tomorrow they will stay off the roads. >> reporter: so what did this street look like 24 hours ago? >> this, you could barely get one car down one way.or >> reporter: lieutenant colonel sean cody oversees more than 300 national guardsmen on the ground in massachusetts.ar >> we have over 700 soldiers out. we do shovel teams. we've cleared 70 miles of roadways. >> reporter: he along with 50 other men and women have been digging out quincy, using the same equipment from combat. >> the soldiers are doing what they signed up for. they're helping their fellow citizens. >> reporter: the state's department of environmental protection says at least 144 coastal communities haveav requested permission to dump snow into waterways.te the concern is the contaminated

snow could pollute the water. boston's mayor says he'll only use the harbor as a last resort.t as people get ready for another round of snow-- all of this was snow? >> my back hurts. my neighbor's back hurts.ack everybody's back hurts becauseyb it's nonstop shoveling. >> reporter: arie levitz says without the help of the national guard, his neighborhood would be trapped. >> a lot more confident now that the guard has cleared things. it's about as good as it's going to be. >> reporter: and today, the governor of massachusetts said he will seek federal aid for his state. jim, the budget for the state for snow removal is $100 million. officials from the governor's office say they are still in the process of assessing just how much of that budget has already been spent. >> axelrod: jericka, thank you. we have already seen the power yo of this next storm as it passed through the midwest this weekend.id at least three people were killed in accidents on the ohio turnpike while a 20-car pileup near columbus closed interstate

70 in both directions. let's bring in eric fisher now the chief meteorologist at our cbs station in boston, wbz. eric, more snow in the last three weeks than chicago's evere had in a winter? >> it's been unbelievable jim. and you could set your watch to it. almost every three days you canhree almost guarantee a storm in eastern new england. here we are again, blizzard warnings for all of eastern newrn england, winter storm warnings to the west of it and the system just getting developed tonight. although we've seen our arctic front producing squalls around pennsylvania and ohio, the storm p wraps up heading into tomorrow morning. that's when we see our strongest winds and blizzard conditions and it wraps up tomorrow night. the highest amounts of snow in the places that have seen the highest amounts in the last three weeks. the wind is what gets tout blizzard criteria. some of the gusts could reach hurricane strength across outer cape cod. >> axelrod: i almost hate to ask but more snow on the way this week?

>> there is, but in different spots. we're look across the south now. by late tomorrow and through. monday, president's day, reaching across the southern states, we're talking about a mix of snow and ice and that could brush the northeast heading into tuesday night into wednesday.in icing concerns anywhere from eastern oklahoma, across arkansas. basically just north of that i- 20 corridor as we head through monday and into tuesday, reaching over into north carolina, and all of this, jim because a lot of cold moving in, 20 to 40 degrees below average for much of this week and much of the east. >> axelrod: lauren lyster is in long island where the worry is not only snowfall but some uncommonly cold temperatures there, are we not? n >> reporter: yeah, jim. the national weather service is forecasting temperatures in the mid-teens in new york, but they could feel more like zero given the wind chill and tomorrow f could feel as cold as 20 degrees below zero depending where you are. by monday we could have temperatures that rival some of the lowest on record ever recorded.

here on eastern long island where they got slammed with as much as 28 inches of snow during the last major storm, there is a blizzard warning in effect through midday tomorrow. the snowfall this time, just 4-8 inches, but the wind is a concern, projected at 30-40 miles per hour with gusts reaching as high as 60 miles per hour. officials are warning the combined conditions will make travel dangerous. the winds could down power lines and tree limbs, high surf and beach erosion is expected. and with poor visibility likely, the recommendation is to stayy off the roads. jim. >> axelrod: lauren, thank you.: there is a manhunt now under way in denmark for a gunman who opened fire on a cafe in copenhagen today.pe the attack may have targeted an artist who had been threatened before over his images of the prophet muhammad. the attack captured on audio tape is stunning to listen to. here's debora patta. >> reporter: the cafe was hosting a forum on freedom of expression.

but all debate was silenced when a gunman sprayed more than 30 bullets through the windows. a recording obtained by the bbc captured the moment. >> when we-- ( gunfire ) "we heard a lot of shots being fired" said this eyewitness. "and a woman shouting 'there's a man with a machine gun'." heavily armed police rush to the scene where they found one person dead and at least three injured. the meeting at the copenhagen cafe was being hosted by controversial swedish artistar lars vilks, who over the years has received numerous death threats for a 2007 caricature of the prophet muhammad. vilks, who was uninjured in the attack, was under danish police protection during his visit. copenhagen police have released these photographs of the gunman,e believed to be 25-30 years of o age.

possibility of a hate crime. joseph kennedy is a law professor at the university of north carolina.rt how hard is it to prove a hate crime? >> it's very hard. it's always hard to get into someone's head. it's always hard to prove motive. >> reporter: kennedy sayss prosecutors will have to prove the main reason the students were killed was because of their race, religion, or another protected status. >> it's not enough if it's one of the reasons. it has to be the main reason why they committed the crime. you can't prosecute someone for p a hate crime simply because of past hate speech or even because of membership in a hate group. >> reporter: north carolina does not have a felony hate crime charge, though it is a death penalty state. prosecutors may be able to make a case for the death penalty even without establishing a hate crime occurred. still, leaders at this mosque are hoping to meet with federal investigators next week to make their case. they say it's important to them to prevent other muslims from becoming victims of similar crimes.
