another day of record-setting cold could be in store for millions of americans. temperatures threaten to plunge to all-time lows, putting nearly half the country into a deep freeze. >> there's the animal a block away. police arrest a teenager they say killed a mother during a las vegas road rage pursuit, but authorities say there are still unanswered questions about the investigation. and on the move. two nfl teams informed their cities they might be leaving their stadium to share one in southern california. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, february 20th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you.

i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the weather and another morning of dangerous cold across much of the country. much of the east will feel more like the arctic. record temperatures are expected to topple in many areas as temps and windchills are expected to fall to single digits and below. don champion is here in new york, one of the places that's expected to set a mark for a new low temperature. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it is so cold that several states have canceled or delayed classes yet again today. the cold air is even sending a shiver to people as far south as florida. not only can you feel the deep freeze gripping parts of the nation, you can also see it. this giant six-story icicle formed on a building in boston. now the arctic air is taking aim at longstanding records in the city and beyond where many states could experience the coldest morning of the season. in the chicago area these nuns

sought salvation themselves as temperatures dipped to 7 below yesterday. >> the nuns had boiler problems and lost heat but still pressed on to help hundreds of the city's homeless. >> it's freezing. >> reporter: in philadelphia the city's 311 call center has been flooded with complaints from residents without heat. >> what they do is tell you to get to a safe place f you have a neighbor, family. >> reporter: here in new york the city could break a 21-year-old record while the south is facing cold. while the cold has many seeking, some are heading to niagara falls. the impressive temperatures have caused ice buildup. the falls have not frozen over but with frigid temperatures expected to linger in the northeast through the weekend, anything may be possible. now, the temperatures are slowly expected to creep back up over the course of the next few days, and while central and eastern

parts of the country have been freezing, interestingly enough, in anchorage, alaska, this week, temperatures approached the 50-degree mark. that sounds amazing right now, anne-marie. >> oh, the irony. don champion here in new york. thank you, don. well meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says all the cold will be followed by another storm. >> we had a whole slew of record lows yesterday morning and more are in jeopardy. boston has only set one record low in the last eight year. they'll have a chance this morning. washington, d.c., hasn't had a record low in 21 year. that will fall. kentucky will beat your record low by at least 10 degrees. absolutely shattered. on saturday, new york, new jersey, baltimore, and richmond all unlikely to escape it. look at these temperatures. lower 20s across the panhandle. might touch the upper 30s in miami to kick off your friday. another storm on top.

this gets going starting friday evening. same spot as the other storms last weekend all across the mid south. this is likely for a mixture of snow and sleet and freezing rain. you see that developing heading into the evening hours. impacting the nashville area. this moves north and eastward for saturday. heads up into the northeast. might end with a little bit of rainfall before it tapers off sunday afternoon. biggest threat across northern arkansas. much of tennessee under the gun for some wintry precipitation and we look for ice also work up west of the 95 corridor. travel safe, everyone. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. u.s. troops are racketing up against isis. a cbs news poll finds nearly two out of three americans, 65% say isis is a major threat to the united states. 67% say the war againstthe islamic terror group is going badly, and that's up ten points in just four months. susan mcginnis is in washington.

susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the u.s. military says the operation to retake mosul is likely to begin in april or may. now, for months the iraqi leaders have made clear they plan to regain control of their country's second largest city. the operation to retake mosul will involve a force of 20,000 to 25,000 iraqi troops supported by u.s. air power. isis gained control of mosul in june. it's held by 1,000 or 2,000 iraqi fighters. the iraqi troops will have been trained by politicalmilitary advisers at bases in iraq. a poll says 57% favor ground troops. that's up 18% since september. president obama was careful to separate islam from terrorism. >> the notion that the west is

at war with islam is a lie. and all of us, regardless of our faith, have a responsibility to reject it. >> critics fault the president for not labeling the violent extremism islamic. speaking at a private republican event wednesday night former new york city mayor rudy giuliani said i do not believe the president loves america. what's wrong with this man that he can't stand up and say there's a part of islam that's sick. those comments triggered much criticism yesterday morning. giuliani told fox news he was. questioning the president's patriotism patriotism. >> he's a patriot, i'm sure. what i'm saying in his rhetoric i rarely hear him say the thing i i used to hear ronald reagan say, the things i used to hear bill clinton say about how much they love america. >> the white house said giuliani test drove this line of attack when he ran for president. now, speaking at that republican event, giuliani also said of the president, quote, he wasn't

brought up the way you were brought up and i was brought up through a love of this country. speaking to "the new york times," he said his criticism should not be viewed as racism because he said the president was brought up by a white mother. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. well, california health officials say the super bug outbreak at a los angeles hospital is not a threat to the general public. the fda is warning doctors though, that the medical instrument linked to the outbreak may be impossible to completely disinfect but they're not pulling the endoscope from the market because they believe the benefits outweigh the risks. teri okita reports. >> reporter: health officials are closely watching the antibiotic for the super bug linked to the deaths of two patients at the ucla medical center. >> the symptoms for the patients were immediate and patients developed fever, chills, and severe infection, sepsis, right after undergoing the procedure.

>> reporter: five others have been infected and nearly 200 other patients may have been exposed to the bacteria called cre and are being watched. >> if the bacteria gets into the bloodstream, half of those patients will die. >> reporter: ucla says two endoscopes are linked to the outbreak, which was discovered last month. doctors here at ucla medical center said the bacteria spread during endoscopic procedures between last october and this january. the hospital said sterilize the scopes according to the manufacturer's standard but the implement's design makes it difficult to clean. >> we've implemented a different process that's much more stringent than what the manufacturer has originally given us based on fda standards. >> reporter: the cdc says it has connected previous super bug outbreaks to the same type of equipment.

they packed winds of up to 180 miles an hour. the cyclones destroyed dozens of homes and brought down trees and power lines. no injuries have been reported though. and a suspect is in custody this morning in the road rage killing of a las vegas mother. the accused gunman is no stranger to the victim. vanessa murphy of our las vegas affiliate says her husband was emotional when police made the arrest. >> reporter: bob meyers reacting to the scene unfolding near his home as metro police arrested the man accused of killing his wife tammy. >> this is a tactical situation. >> reporter: 19-year-old eric nowsch was taken into cuffed after a standoff. police say he gunned down the mother of four on february 12th after a road rage incident. >> there's the animal. a block away! are you happy? >> reporter: the day after the murder, the meyers pleaded for the public's help in finding the killer referred to as a

stranger. this sketch and video were released, a fund for the family was set up, but the story changed. on tuesday police revealed meyers and her armed son went searching for the other driver after the road rage incident. then on thursday, the day of the arrest, another twist. meyers admit his family knew the suspected killer. >> we know this boy. i couldn't tell you this before. he knew where i lived. >> reporter: later at a police press conference -- >> captain, did the police know meyers knew who was the suspect and why there wasn't an accurate description. it seemed to be more of a general manhunt. >> that's accurate. that didn't all come together today. >> reporter: so police did not know that till today that the meyers family knew him? >> we did not know that. >> reporter: police believe there may have been another

here's a look at to here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new diet guidelines from the government offer familiar advice along with some surprises. the basic message in the draft recommendations, americans should eat more fruits and vegetables and whole grains and less saturated fat, salt, and sugar. they say coffee is beneficial up to five cups a day and so is moderate alcohol consumption. and there's less concern about cholesterol, so eating eggs is okay again. the government will take comments before releasing the final guidelines later this year. on the "cbs moneywatch," apple may be hitting the road with its latest project, and

walmart workers get a raise. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. apple has about 200 people working on the project and is looking to hire more. apple hopes to compete with tesla and gm. they're targeting 2017 for the release of an electric car that can go more than 200 miles on a single charge and cost under $40,000. stocks on wall street were mixed, held back by a slide in utilities. the dow lost 44 points yesterday. the s&p fell 2 points. but the nasdaq gained 18 points to finish the day. colorado's booming marijuana industry is facing some new legal address this morning. some colorado residents filed federal lawsuits to shut the industry down, saying it hurts their property value and attracts unsavory visitors. the state attorney general says

she will defend the laws. nearly 40% of walmart's workers in this country are getting a raise. the world's largest retailer is spending $1 billion to change how it pays and trains workers. half a million walmart workers will get pay hikes. walmart is raising its starting wage to at least $9 an hour. the average wage for full-time workers will be $13 an hour more than a dollar below the retail industry average. anne-marie? >> all right. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thank you very much, jill. well, after more than 250 even soeds episodes, the hit tv sitcom "two and a half men" came to an end, and, spoiler alert, it involved charlie sheen. sort of. >> winning.

into a brawl in turkey's parliament. a crowd of lawmakers push and shoved. it in injured two people. five people were hit in the head with a gavel. the country's ruling party is trying to push through a controversial bill to boost police powers. and not one but two nfl teams are hinting they might be on the move and can even share a stadium. the san francisco chargers and oakland raiders are now making plans to build a stadium in carson, california, located in los angeles county. the teams say they would be forced to move in order to stay economically viable. the $1.7 billion stadium would only be built if the teams can't reach new stadium deals in their respective cities. the nfl hasn't commented on the potential move. and the daytona 500 is this weekend, and there is already a lot of controversy brewing. it has to do with danica despite the dustup patrick
