>> glor: hi everyone i'm jeff glor with a western edition the broadcast. it doesn't matter where you look on the map. problematic and potentially dangerous weather events are taking place everywhere. a storm stretching across the southern part of the u.s., producing freezing rain in the deep south. bone chilling cold is about to return across the great lakes and the northeast and there are flood threats in west virginia and tennessee. the full forecast in just a moment but first, we begin with anna werner in monterey, tennessee. >>reporter: ice storms have hit eastern tennessee before but nothing like this, says putnam county mayor randy porter. >> we never see this. >> the ice storm of record?ty >> the ice storm of record of my lifetime. >> power lines came down, at oneos point sunday 44,000 people lost

electricity. this shelter in the town of monterey took 40 people that night and expects more tonight. when the power went out so did oxygen machines. they described sitting in a 40° house for nearly two days. >> what does it feel to be in this position? >> pretty helpless. paid for froze to death, no doubt about it. >>reporter: nine people in tennessee have died from hypothermia. so in the city of crossville people stood in line to get propane to heat their homes and all across the region the soundop of saws could be heard as crews removed lines from across trees. now as you can see, some of these trees have sustained a lot of damage from the weight of thee ice bringing these branchesri down. but officials here tell me their biggest problem is actually the

fog which is all around us. crews can't fix those power lines until the fog goes away. they're hoping for sunshine later this week, but they say it could be a couple of days, even a couple of weeks, for some residents in very rural areas. >> glor: anna werner, thank you. eric fisher, chief meteorologist, what is the forecast? forecast? >> jeff, all the southern tier of states, all the way into north carolina and olot of sleet, snow and freezing rain mixed in with this one. really treacherous travel, this is all snow, sleet and freezing rain. that sherbert color is where you see the ice coming down. the dallas area, really treacherous plus the impact into the airports. icing across alabama and mississippi as well as louisiana. some impressive ice totals. this could actually cause some power outages.

especially watching this corridor from wichita falls and dallas and shreveport. the highest mountains of swan mountains of colorado, six inches of snow in parts of northwest texas. west, major arctic blast temperatures 20 to 40° below average. wind chill values, look well below zero on monday morning. 40 below zero in parts of new england. another shot on wednesday. >> eric fisher, thank you. new developments in an apparent terror threat against shopping malls in the u.s. joint intelligence bulletin went out to law noarms officials this afternoon. it alerts officials about the video releaseby the terrorist group al shabaab and its threats
