unmasked. the isis executioner known as jihadi john is identified, and now some of the families he victimized are speaking out. >> the only thing i'll be happy with is when isis is defeated, you know, so the next jihadi john is on the way. the southeast looks to thaw out after getting a coating of snow, but tens of thousands of homes are still without power. >> we were showing llamas to our residents who have gotten loose. llamas on the lam. authorities have a tough time chasing down two fugitive animals who escaped from their handlers and ended up as television sensations. and it's the dress that stoked a heated debate on the internet overnight, so what color is it?

captioning funded by cbs this this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, february 27th, 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. to millions of people he has become the symbol of isis the knife-wielding executioner who carried out the murder of hostages held by the terror group. former isis captives nicknamed him jihadi john, but now we know the identity of the masked terrorist. don champion tells us who he is and what some of those victimized by him are saying. don, good morning. >> good morning, lauren. his name is mohammed emwazi. the 27-year-old was born and raised in london. he was on intelligence radar for more than five years, but for a family of one of the ones he killed, none of that matters. >> in all fairness discovering

who he is might be important to some people but it should be not important to me. >> reporter: the parents of journalist james foley who was executed by isis last august have learned the identity of their son's killer. they say capturing or killing mohammed emwazi would not do any good. >> what does that do? isis is still doing its thing. it's a very narrow approach. the only thing i'll be happy with is when isis is defeated. >> reporter: emwazi's name was made public early thursday morning but they were known to be aware of his identity for some time. emwazi earned a computer science degree from westminster university in london and it was on a 2009 post-graduation trip from london to africa that he first caught the attention of security services.

british and local services stopped him and accused him of trying to join the al shabaab terrorist group in somalia. he was sent to amsterdam for more questioning while he remained under surveillance while living with his family. emwazi told his story to cage a british group committed to telling their story. he blamed emwazi's radicalization of how he was treated by authorities. >> when are we going to find and learn that when we treat people as if they're outsiders, they will inevitably feel like outsiders, and they will look for it elsewhere. he was extremely kind, extremely soft-spoken, was the most humble young person that i knew. >> this is james foley. >> reporter: emwazi disappeared from london in 2012 and turned up in syria where he has appeared in at least five isis execution videos. his accent enticing young people to join the terror group.

>> he's become a huge terrorist to a community of what we call fan boys and fan girls who sit around and support them virtually. so jihadi john is a celebrity to them. >> now, other relatives of the men emwazi killed are speaking out. the family of james foley say they want him caught and sent to prison while the family of david haps says they'll feel closer when he's dead. >> meanwhile they've ramped up their siege of destruction. the militants seized more than 200 christians in syria over the past three days. they also destroyed a valued museum in iraq. isis released this video apparently showing the destruction of ancient artifacts at the mosul museum. the militants ransacked the mosul library last month. today both the house and

senate here in the u.s. are expected to vote on a stopgap measure to keep the department of homeland security operating for three weeks, but the bitter battle over dealing with president obama's immigration directive is far from over. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> lauren, good morning. the scenario playing out here is all too familiar to many americans. democrats and republicans bickering on capitol hill into the 11th hour before a crucial deadline that would shut down some part of the government. the difference this time is that the agency in question is the one that protects the nation from terrorism at a time when terror threats are on the rise. with a midnight deadline looming the house is set to vote today on a measure to fund the department of homeland security. >> we have been now, you're correct, six weeks leaving the department of homeland security twisting in the wind. we've done that, as the gentleman knows --

>> the day before the deadline hit, tensions were so high on the house floor, one lawmaker report resorted to name calling. >> we did our part and i yield back. >> i yield back. >> the two sides reached a stalemate over republican efforts to block president obama's executive actions on immigration as part of the deal to fund homeland security. after weeks of bickering, house republicans agreed to vote on a short-term measure that would fund the agency for less than a month and leave congress facing the issue again in the spring. if the two sides can't agree, some 30,000 homeland security employees would be furloughed. essential workers like tsa agents would have to work without pay. >> anytime you ask people to come to work without pay even though they may eventually get paid and they miss a paycheck or two, that creates anxiety within their families. >> johnson says failure to fund the department would also put the country at risk. it comes as the country's

already thwarted plans for two residents who want to join syria and attack the u.s. now the senate is expected to vote today and fund a measure that would pass through september. that is not expected to pass the house leaving this quick fix short-term scenario as an outcome. lauren. >> susan mcginnis in washington, thank you, susan. this morning the snow continues. a winter weather advisory remains for most of hard-hit north carolina. elsewhere there are winter weather advisories posted in texas, oklahoma, and new mexico. and the upper midwest is in for another blast of below normal temperatures. in north carolina it's the same heavy wet snow that caused the collapse of this gas station awning that downed trees and power lies. this morning nearly 38,000 customers remain without electricity. at one point 180,000 homes and businesses were without

electricity. power won't be completely restored until tonight. roads are starting to clear in alabama, meanwhile. snow there also made for treacherous driving conditions. parts of northern alabama were socked with 10 inches of snow, essentially shutting down a large part of the state. and it's so cold in new england that there are slushy waves off the coast of nantucket island. the water temperature is below freezing, but the sea salt and motion are preventing the ocean from turning into solid ice. the republicans who hoped to succeed president obama in the white house face a key test this morning more than 20 months from the 2016 election. they must win over the conservative activists meeting outside washington. nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: there are few places besides a debate stage where you can final every single gop hopeful, but cpac is one of

them, an annual gathering of thousands of loaders er leaders and activists. senator ted cruz is right at home here. >> obamacare is a train wreck, and that's actually not fair to train wrecks. >> reporter: for new jersey governor chris christie, it's a chance to convince concept tingkonconvince skeptics that he's further to the right than they think. >> i'm pro-life. i ran, spoke at the steps of the white house and vetoed planned parenthood funding five times out of the new jersey budget. >> reporter: winning over this crowd is critical because they reflect the views of most gop primary voters. in a resent cbs news poll, 65% of republicans nationwide call themselves conservative including a third who are very conservative. texas governor rick perry and all the rest insist they're still testing the waters.

a pair of llamas on the loose in arizona thursday captured the nation's attention. their escape and chase through the streets of sun city chronicled by news helicopters. kris van cleave shows how the duo's drama played out on the streets and social media. >> can i help you? >> we were showing our llamas to residents and they're now on the loose. we eaten've spent an hour trying to capture them. we're wondering if we can get some help. >> reporter: safe to say that's the first maricopa law enforcement got a call about catching llamas. >> we were letting them show them off and pet them and one of the old gentleman wanted to hold her and she broke loose and the chase is on. >> we have some breaking news to report now. >> reporter: as are most foot

the broad band industry is expected to sue after the fc cnet neutrality rules. net neutrality is the idea that internet providers like at&t and verizon should not be allowed to create paid fast lanes at the expense of other web traffic. president obama lobbied for the new controls. two of five fcc commissioners voted against the new rules. >> you cannot say to the fcc's defending every aspect of the open internet throwing itself into disputes about internet connection adopting rules that are even stronger than those ever adopted before, yet still say at the same time we're not regulating the internet. >> industry officials say net neutrality will raise costs for consumers. slumping energy stocks lead to a mix on wall street. the dow lost 10 points, the s&p 500 flipped 3, but the nasdaq finished 20 points higher. the new york "daily news" is making headlines this morning. it may be up for sale. in a memo to employees yesterday

owner mort zuckerman said he was approached about selling the tabloid a few weeks ago. the potential buyer was not named. zuckerman said it would be prudent to explore selling. he's hired an advising firm to look into it. and friday will be the new day for music instead of tuesday. they will release music on friday, the international administration of the phonograph ic industry said having a unified release day reduces the risk of piracy and fridays and saturdays are when people are most interested in buying new music. lauren? >> jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. jill, thank you. from the red carpet to the black market. a gown worn by the actress lupita nyong'o has been stolen. the dress covered in pearls is valued at $150,000. police say it was taken

here's look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the nfl says it will appeal a federal judge's ruling that clears the way for minnesota running back adrian peterson to be reinstated. the nfl suspended peterson through at least april 15th because of a child abuse case involving his son. the league used its enhanced personal conduct policy adopted after the injuries to peterson's son to punish peterson.

the judge ruled that was illegal. in the nba lebron james scores a season-high 42 points. fellow mvp candidate stephen curry had 18 points for the warriors. it was cleveland's fourth win in a row and their 11th straight home victory. and earl lloyd, the first african-american to play in the nba, is being remembered as a humbled trailblazer. he died yesterday. he broke the nba color barrier on october 31st, 1950, playing for the washington capitals. nicknamed the big cat, lloyd played in more than 560 games for washington, syracuse, and detroit. he retired in 1960. earl lloyd was 86 years old. a dress debate on social media has some people seeing red. this is the dress stirring passions. color partisans fall into two camps. on one side, white and gold. on the other side, black and blue. the second group is right, but

drone-mounted cameras are taking us inside the ring of fire for the first time. a filmmaker used the technology to capture these incredible images of an active volcano on a pacific island of vanuatu. stan cossman says he hopes to build a 3-d map of the volcano. he'll need to get some new drones though. some of them were ruined by the extreme heat. a week from today nasa's dawn is expected to get a close-up look. but mysterious bright lights on the planet are already fueling the imagination of some.

john ramos of our affiliate kpix reports. >> reporter: when the dawn spacecraft was launched in 2007 its mission was to explore our solar system's asteroid belt but now as it approaches the dwarf planet ceres, it's drawing attention. >> what's exciting is we don't know what they are. >> reporter: astronomer ben burris at the chabot space and science center in oakland says nasa is refusing to guess what those bright spots are 20,000 miles away as they wait for dawn to get closer but visitors from sunset elementary in livermore had some ideas. >> it can be a spaceship. >> you think it's a spaceship? >> yes. >> that would be cool, wouldn't? >> yes. >> maybe it's something burning up on the planet. >> it just might be an alien. >> it could be an aillien?
