2015. good morning, i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. we begin with another winter storm a lot of wary americans hope is the season's last hoo-rah. it's from the texas border to new england. icy rain, snow and sleet fell overnight. states of emergency in alabama, mississippi, new jersey and west virginia, where nearly half a million customers are wout power this morning. central kentucky is feeling the effect. heavy snowfall is making for dangerous travel conditions in the lexington area. the temperature there is expected to be around 1 degree. because of the weather, 2300 flights have been canceled most in washington, dallas and northeast. don champion is in new york where the snow is starting to fall. don, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, lauren. it's starting to fall and change over in the past hour or so. people in two dozen states are under winter weather alerts. the storm makes for dangerous commutes from dallas to the boston area. plows hit the road in west virginia overnight as snow quickly accumulated on the ground. just yesterday, parts of the state had flooded roads and mudslides after heavy downpours. up to a foot of snow expected today, officials issued a state of emergency. >> i have never seen it like this. >> reporter: there's a similar soggy story playing out in parts of kentucky. >> i hope the snow moves in quicker than they anticipate to slow down the water flow. >> reporter: it could be winter's final punch of the season expected to bring snow and ice in texas. >> try to plan the flattest route with the fewest turns and the fewest areas where you could get in trouble. >> travel in arkansas could be so tricky, police plan to use

military hummers to get around. >> gives us the dimension to be able to serve the community and get places where we may not be able to get normally when the conditions like this get bad up there. >> cities like washington, d.c. and philadelphia could get six inches of snow. in new york city, people could see four inches. in boston, if more than two inches fall, it could become the snowiest winter in the city. >> you don't want to give up in 23rd hour. the last mile before the marathon. we can take a little more. >> reporter: what could certainly be light at the end of this snowy tunnel. the deputy director at the climate prediction center expects temperatures to be considerably warmer in the country over the course of the an ex few weeks. looking forward to that. >> don champion in new york, thank you. eric fisher of wbc says more cold air is following the latest winter blast. >> we have been watching the

arctic air drive southward. big temperature changes overnight. places that were in the 80s like jackson, birmingham area atlanta, falling to the 20s and 30s. by thursday night, teens and 20s over a huge area. winter is coming back. along that boundary is where we are tracking the rain ice and snow moving eastward for thursday. significant totals from new york philly and d.c. wrapping up as snow leaves virginia beach area. south side of the ohio valley, the snow has been coming down we could see double digit snow. four to five inches in new york city and totals in d.c. and richmond. on top of it, we have seen rain and rivers running high in kentucky and west virginia. be careful of swift moving water. we have seen wild weather the last couple weeks there. the cold this morning, some record lows possible. we will do it again on friday morning. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. the american ambassador for

south korea is hospitalize zed this morning after a knife attack in seoul. he was slashed in the face and wrist wednesday. it happened as he prepared for a lecture on peace. blood was splattered on his face, hands and tie. witnesses say the attacker screamed demand for korean unification. the suspect is in custody. he's a former naval intelligence officer who served in iraq and afghanistan. hillary clinton tweeted she wants the public to see her e-mails and asked the state department to release them. this follows word that a house committee subpoenaed the e-mails as the uproar of using private e-mail simmered. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, hi. >> reporter: good morning. the clinton tweet says the state department will review her e-mails for release as soon as possible. angry critics want answers. they say the private e-mail system she used allowed her to

avoid scrutiny. news that clinton used a private e-mail account while secretary of state triggered a controversy. she used a private server at her home to store the core spon dance. clinton turned over 55,000 e-mails to the state department. trey gowdy on libya in 2012. >> i believe they have provided everything they have but whether the 55,000 is the entire universe or half the universe, how would we know? >> reporter: the subpoenas issued by the republican controlled house committee investigating benghazi seek all communications of former secretary of state, hillary clinton, related to libya and letters sent to internet firms informing them of their legal obligation to protect documents. four americans, including chris stevens were killed in the attack on the u.s. post. a clinton spokesman says she

complied with the letter and the spirit of the law. she is not the first high ranking official to use private e-mail for government business. the state department says she met existing laws. >> when she was secretary, a, there was not a prohibition or a time requirement for when personal e-mails or documents had to be preserved as part of the record. >> reporter: now, dowdy says within two weeks he needs all the relevant documents or a very good explanation of why they are delayed. republicans have been looking very, very closely at the actions surrounding the benghazi attack. this controversy could set up a legal clash between gop lawmakers and the presumptive democratic candidate. >> thanks. testimony resumes in the boston marathon bombing trial. baren rand mcwatters lost her

leg in the attack. she watched her close friend die on the pavement next to her. she very slowly said her legs hurt. we held hands and shortly after that, her hand went limp in mine and she never spoke after that. kris van cleave has more. >> reporter: jurors watch grizzly videos after the boston marathon bombing. the discurbing images show the victims lying on the ground as people try to stop the bleeding. the man who shot the video said he smelled a mixture of gun powder and burned flesh. accused bomber tsarnaev has no reaction during opening arguments. the blast killed three and injured more than 260. he's charged with the shooting death of an m.i.t. police officer. defense attorney judy clark conceded, it was him that participated in the attacks, but his older brother, tamerlan shot

>> i threw him off me. i kept doing what i was doing. he walked away and started blowing the snow on me. >> reporter: it happened sunday on east overlook drive. another neighbor snapped these photos of the incident. >> he says what are you going to do about it? i grabbed him by his coat like this. i said i'm telling you again, don't touch my sidewalk. >> reporter: he says he started snow blowing his driveway and warned him to move. >> i'll be damned if i'm going to clean my sidewalk and bust my rear end to keep my sidewalk clean when we have officials in this city that don't practice what they preach. >> reporter: they admit they have had issues with each other for years. sunday's snowy fight may have been the breaking point. he says myers blew the snow he shovelled back on to the sidewalk. >> this was over snow. in the fall, it's over leaves. it's just constant.
