this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, march 6th, 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. this morning federal aviation officials are trying to determine the cause of a very close call at new york's laguardia airport. a delta airliner skidded off the runway yesterday, and came within feet of plunging into an icy bay. brian webb is at laguardia airport. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. there were 132 passengers on board flight 1086 yesterday. snow was falling and visibility was low, and even under the best of conditions this airport leaves little room for error. overnight crews moved the plane from the edge of flushing bay where the md-88 had stopped just before plunging into the water. >> they had broken through the fence, and we were literally five to six feet away from the water. >> reporter: the passenger took this picture from his seat. >> the wheels did not grab, did not take and immediately you

heard the skidding. we felt like we skidded for probably 20 seconds. i grabbed the seat in front of me, started to pray. >> reporter: it was coming in. the twin engine jet landed hard on runway 13. about three-quarters of the way down the runway, the jet veered sharply to the left. it hit an embankment and crashed through a fence, its nose hanging out over the water. >> it was nerve-racking. the plane came down and it slid and we looked out the window and we could see the wing was hitting a fence. >> we have an aircraft off 31. please advise crash rescue. >> reporter: first responders quickly got to the jet. passengers were evacuated over a broken wing. the runway had been plowed just minutes before the delta landing and two other pilots reported good braking conditions right before the crash. fire officials say five passengers were taken to area

hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. all are counting their blessings. >> thankful to the pilot who maneuvered the plane and kept us out of that water. >> reporter: there is no hard and fast rule how much ice or snow shuts down a runway. the faa makes that decision based on conditions and pilot reports. lauren, so far today, 80 flights have already been canceled. >> all right. brian webb at new york's laguardia. thanks for that. now to the nation's weather. for a change there are no major storms to report this morning, but there is the cold and lots of it. arctic air has surged south and today a large part of the country will be making up to below freezing temperatures. record cold temperatures could be recorded from texas to illinois. this morning highway officials in kentucky say those two interstates that were clogged with hundreds of cars and trucks stranded because of heavy snow are open.

the line of vehicles stretched for 40 miles. drivers were stuck for hours, many overnight wednesday into thursday. snow in some areas topped 2 feet. >> we just sat in the car here and slept. started to warm it up a little bit and shut it down and go to sleep. >> some stranded drivers had to be rescued by the national guard. the weather system caused severe flooding in southern west virginia. heavy rains closed dozens of roads. there was some flooding in dozens of the 55 counties. harrison ford is in a california hospital this morning after the plane he was flying crashed yesterday afternoon. ford who started in some of hollywood's biggest movies of all time like the "star wars" and "indiana jones" series crashed on a golf course just moments after taking off from a

santa monica airport. danielle nottingham is at the scene of the crash. good morning, danielle. >> reporter: good morning, lauren. as you can see behind me the single-engine plane is still on the golf course this morning. now, harrison ford has survived events like this in the past and it appears luck is on his side again. >> 53178, engine failure, immediate return. >> reporter: actor harrison ford remains hospitalized today. his publicist says he is expected to make a full recovery after he was forced to crash land on a golf course in a vintage plane thursday afternoon. >> this pilot is an experienced pilot. >> reporter: shortly after takeoff from santa monica airport the 72-year-old told air traffic controllers his engine failed. >> oh my god. i hope he's all right. >> reporter: his plane did clip a tree. in a bit of irony, the man who is best known for playing a hero in films like "star wars" and

"indiana jones" was initially attended to by bystanders. >> we saw a golfers carry him out of the plane, one by his arms, one by his legs. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board will investigate this crash and has expressed relief there were no fatalities. >> any time a human being is involved in an accident, whether it's a car, jet, airplane, or otherwise, and survives, is a good day. >> reporter: after the accident, celebrities including william shatner took to twitter to wish the actor well. referring to a recent accident while working on the latest installment of a "star wars" film, he said harrison had a door fall on him and he continued filming. he's tough. ford's son tweeted, he is every bit the man you would think he is. he is an incredibly strong man. >> that was danielle nottingham

this morning investigators are trying to determine what caused a freight train loaded with crude oil to derail and burst into flames. the accident happened thursday in a rural part of illinois in galena. no one was hurt. flames could be seen miles away. the fire sent thick black smoke into the sky. officials say six of the train's 103 oil cars left the tracks. it was transporting crude from the bakken oil patch. jurors hearing testimony in the boston marathon bombing trial will get a break today. witnesses gave vivid accounts of the carnage from the attacks on thursday. kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: these are still images from a video shown to the jury when prosecuteors say dzhokhar tsarnaev plant add bomb and watched. just feet away the richards family and in the back groumd,

the the 21-year-old defendant in a white hat. bill richard testified he was blown into the street, his daughter jane lost her leg and his son martin lost his life. he said, i knew he wasn't going to make it. i saw my son barely alive for the last time. survivor rebecca gregory said facing the defendant in court actually helped her get past her fear. >> he's like a young little boy who had his whole life ahead of him and did this horrific thing and is now going to spend it either in prison or, you know, put to death. >> reporter: the trial was expected to last three to four months but is moving faster than expected because so far the defense has questioned only one witness. this haunting video captures jeff bauman who lost both of his legs. they looked at him, he wasn't having fun. bowman noticed a bag on the street and told his friend, maybe we should get out of her. moments later he said tamerlan

they slid down ropes to get to the ground. heavy winds hampered the rescue efforts. no one was hurt. convicted murderer jodi arias will not face the death penalty. a jury in phoenix couldn't break a deadlock thursday. they voted 11-1 in favor of death for the woman who killed her lover travis alexander. the victim's sister had an emotional message outside of court. >> the real justice will be in afterlife when jodi burns in hell. >> the jury had deliberated for 26 hours over five days. they even asked the judge to remove the lone holdout, but the judge refused. the juror's husband said she felt pressure. >> yeah. she said she felt she was being assaulted by the juror ss to go the other way. she held strong to her beliefs and i'm proud of that. >> she could get life in prison or the possibility of release after 25 years.

that decision is expected in april. a syracuse university student could lose four fingers to frostbite after a fraternity hazing stunt. the student was part of a group of pledges who were forced to crawl in the snow and do pushups last weekend. they were not wearing gloves. two fraternity members were arrested wednesday and charged with hazing. syracuse suspended the chapter nu alpha phi. hundreds of big corporations are urging the supreme court to back same-sex marriage this morning. companies from an array of industries such as apple, general electric and pfizer to bank of america and starbucks briefed the court thursday. they're among the companies who say same-sex marriage is bad for business. the court will hear arguments in april. a decision is expected in june. straight ahead, the girl scouts fight back. a troop sticks up for the workers who make their famous cookies after hearing about their working conditions.

and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, lauren. all of the nation's largest banks are stronger than at any time since the 2008 financial crisis. jpmorgan, wells fargo, bank of america, and citigroup along with 27 others passed the federal reserve's annual stress test. that means they're strong enough to survive a severe u.s. or global recession and keep lending. the fed started conducting stress tests back in 2009 to restore confidence in the u.s. financial system. asian markets finished mostly higher on the european central banks. tokyo's nikkei gained 1%. hong kong's hang seng lost a fraction. stocks here on wall street finished slightly higher edged forward by gains in utility and financial stocks. the dow jones industrials gained 38 points. the s&p 500 finished 2 points higher. and the nasdaq composite rose 15 points. >> the state of new jersey announced a $225 million settlement with exxonmobil for

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a texas man is using the big blast of winter to send a romantic message. darryn brock woke up early thursday and carved "i love you andrea" into the snow. he wanted to surprise his fiancee. brock shaped the giant letters with his boots. >> the best thing that i feel i want to provide for her to know i love her is to say it big and loud. >> so i put my hand up and i put my head on the window sill. and it was -- then i looked at him and back out and i said no one has ever done this for me. very sweet. >> the snowy love note has been shared more than a million times on social media.

in sports oklahoma city guard russell westbrook seized his fourth streak of triple-doubles. his late-game mistake cost k.c. the game. after the bulls took the lead, westbrook steps out of bounds giving chicago the ball and the 108-105 win. seattle seahawks coach pete carroll was criticized for his late-game decision that caused his team a win in super bowl xlix. but his play calling at the end of the first half is getting praise from halftime performer katy perry. according to "sports illustrated" carroll's decision to try to go down the field and score before halftime pushed perry's performance back to after the sun set. perry's creative partner said if the sun was still up for the halftime show many of the elaborate set pieces including the lion she rode onto the field would not have looked so good. that infamous left shark, though would have looked good in any light.

there's a new perspective on a milestone in a civil rights movement. it was 50 years ago that there was a march. the first attempt ended with a confrontation with police. jim axelrod has the story. >> this march will not continue. >> reporter: among the many being beaten in selma on that bloody sunday on the edmund pettus bridge was linda lowery, a 14-year-old girl in the 19th row. >> he hit me two times that i could remember. >> a police officer. >> it was a sheriff's deputy. i received seven stitches over my right eye and 28 stitches in the back of my head.
