-- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs news" for this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, march 20th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today is the first day of spring, but winter isn't taking the hint. this morning a snow and rainstorm is pushing over the mid-atlantic and by tonight into new england. 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected, and that adds insult to injury to places like boston which has seen a record amount of snow this year and could get an inch or two more today. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says behind the snow is more cold. >> well, spring may start today, but it doesn't mean it can't snow. weather doesn't necessarily have to match. we've got a storm moving its way northward. you see the snow blossoming as we head through the morning commute.

for the commute, we're watching the dc area, much of maryland working in. it's creeping northward into the day. for the evening drive the corridor on 95 from philly to new york city, new jersey and southwestern connecticut, that's where you could see bands of heavier snow adding up, making for difficult travel. snow at the airports before it rolls out to sea friday night. during the totals we'll see much across central p.a., northern new jersey. 3 to 6. 2 to 4 for philly. a coating of as much as 2 inches in washington, d.c. the storm booted out to sea by another strong cold front. what that means is more below average temperatures moving in especially for sunday and monday. sunday's highs mainly in the 30s and 40s. for the cherry blossoms, the daffodils, things you expect for spring, we're gang to wait a little longer than average this year. i'm eric fisher, cbs news. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu seems to be reversing his stance on the palestinian state. late in his election he ruled out a two-state solution, but yesterday he backed away from those statements.

none of this sits well with obama administration officials. they say they're reassessing their approach to the issue. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it was quite a stunning reversal. netanyahu stating now he supports a two-state solution for israel and palestinians after he stated so strongly before the election there will be no palestinian state under his watch. the reversal is not being received very warmly at the white house. two days after a sweeping victory in the israeli election, prime minister benjamin netanyahu is backtracking on a major declaration he made day before the vote when he asserted should he win, there will be no palestinian state. >> i haven't changed my policy. >> now in an interview with msnbc, netanyahu brushed off those comments. >> i don't want a one-state solution. i want a peaceful two-state

solution, but for that to happen, circumstances have to change. >> in a phone to president obama, he committed to it despite netanyahu's latest remarks. >> words matter and it does prompt the administration and policy maker here's to evaluate our thinking about the approach to these issues. >> another frustration for the white house has been netanyahu's opposition to a nuclear deal with iran. on thursday he softened his deal saying he could live with iran holding some uranium enriching senn tre fiej. obama marked the new year urging them to compromise. >> i believe our countries can resolve this peacefully with diplomacy. >> the u.s. and five world powers have set an end of march deadline for a deal that would in part eliminate iran's ability to build a nuclear weapon for at least a decade.

tl latest indications, though, are that a nuclear deal with iran and those five world powers are no longer on track for an end of march agreement. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. the virginia state police are investigating the arrest of a university of virginia student that triggered protests over race and the use of force by police. martese johnson was arrested outside a charlottesville bar. it's been reported that he tried to use a fake i.d. his attorney says that is not so. craig boswell is in charlottesville and has more. >> i'm shock thad my face was slammed into the brick pavement. >> reporter: martese johnson's tone red a statement thursday while the university of virginia student remained sigh lenl his head scarred from his bloody arrest early wednesday by alcohol ber raj control agents outside a charlottesville bar. >> three officers then pinned me to the ground pressing their knees to my back while the blood flowed freely from the gash to my head.

>> reporter: the 20-year-old needed ten stitches. johnson is a popular student who was recently elected vice chairman of the school's honor committee. virginia's governor has ordered state officials to look into the arrest. >> i think the investigation needs to go forward. we'll get all the facts out and make those assessments once the investigation is complete. >> reporter: johnson was charged with obstruction of justice without force and public swearing or intoxication, but many students here don't buy it. protests have drawn hundreds of people. >> there's been a lot of tension at uva but no one wants to address it. >> reporter: uva junior alicia cooper says the demonstrations are needed to start a conversation about race and use of police force. >> because if we never address and act like everything is okay then we can't move forward. >> craig boswell cbs news charlottesville, virginia. the fbi is investigating the hanging death of a black man in mississippi. his decomposed body was found hanging by a bed sheet in southwest mississippi.

an autopsy will be performed to determine if the death was a suicide or homicide. officials believe it's the body of otis byrd who was last seen march 2nd. the body was found in the woods about 200 yards from byrd's house. tunisian authorities say it's still unclear who was behind the deadly attack at a museum even though isis is claiming responsibility. 23 people including gunmen were killed in wednesday's rampage. most were foreign tourists. allen pizzey is in tunis. >> reporter: tunisian state television has turned the terror attack into a fast-moving music video to bolster the image of its security forces. but for those who lived through it, the experience was a story written in blood. this french tourist gave her name only as marilene. my friend and i put blood on our faces and bodies pretending we were dead.

we laid on the ground pretending we were dead. we were scared to death. this man and his wife christina rubio said they hid in a storeroom all night. the two gunmen who were shot have been identified and at least nine suspects linked to the attack have been arrested but tunisian authorities still have no idea who may have sent them. isis has a foothold in neighboring libya and it claimed responsibility but a home grown militant group also applauded the attack and they're linked to al qaeda affiliates in nigeria. this human rights activist worries about the rise in militant islam. are you nervous that you're being squeezed in by fundamental lists from all sides? >> i think this is major challenge to the newly emerging democracy in tunisia. >> reporter: the government said the attack appeared to have been aimed at tourism, which is a key part of the tunisian economy, but this merchant said he won't be intimidated.

cafe until police stormed the building killing the gunmen. plaques dedicated to the two victims were install as permanent memorials inside the cafe. and testimony wrapped up for the week in the boston marathon bombing trial. thursday's focus was on the home made bomb detonated on a residential street in the days following the attack. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: prosecutors showed jurors the mangle remains of a pressure cooker bomb. it was found embedded in a car in watertown, massachusetts, the quiet neighborhood where prosecutors say dzhokhar and tamerlan tsarnaev had a gun battle with police four days after the boston marathon bombing. fbi agent brian corcoran testified bomb fragments rained down on residential streets as far as a block away and a pressure cooker lid was lodged in a child's backyard hockey net. he testified the explosive was the same type used in the marathon attack that killed three people and injured 264. jurors also got a look at some of the defendants' reading material like online extremist propaganda.
