seventh seed wichita state advances to the sweet 16 by upsetting instate rival kansas. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, march 23rd, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. senator ted cruz republican from texas says he's running for president. cruz tweeted his intentions early this morning. he's the first major party candidate to announce. a favorite of the conservatives cruz has battled against the president's health initiative, promised to abolish the internal revenue service, and the education department. cruz will discuss his candidacy today during his visit in virginia. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. announcing early is being called a strategy on the part of cruz to stand out and grab some early attention ahead of what's expected to be a very crowded

field of competitors for the republican nomination. hours before what was expected to be his official announcement at virginia's liberty university, texas republican ted cruz took to twitter to announce his bid for the white house. >> it's going to take a new generation of conservatives to help make america great again. >> the tweet posted shortly after midnight included this 30-second campaign video with a message to voters. aides say his remarks today will highlight his oratory skills. in 2013 cruz gained notoriety when he famously delivered a 21-hour-long filibuster on the senate floor in an attempt to defund president obama's health care law. some democrats are already blasting his chances. on nbc's "meet the press," california governor jerry brown who ran unsuccessfully for

president called cruz unfit to run, particularly because of what he calls his extreme views on climate challenge. >> that man betoken such a level of ignorance and direct falsification of the existing scientific data. >> cruz's announcement makes him the first candidate from either party to officially though his hat into the ring. the freshman senator will have to set himself apart in a crowded field of republicans expected to include former florida glonch jeb bush and governor scott walker of wisconsin. over the next few weeks florida senator marco rubio and kentucky senator rand paul are also expected to launch their campaigns. and there are more. new jersey governor chris christie, former arkansas governor mike huckabee, senator lindsey graham, former hewlett-packard ceo carla fiorina. anne-marie, the list goes on. >> indeed. thank you, susan. the pentagon is looking at what appears to be an islamic hit list of american military personnel. julianna goldman reports.

>> reporter: the video comes from the islamic state hacking division. it was released on social media and encourages isis supporters to kill those who are listed. the terror group claims in the video the information was obtained by hacking military databases, but the pentagon says it believes the information was publicly available online from news articles and even its own reports about the campaign against isis. the marine corps and air force say they're making sure everyone named in the video is notified. they're asking servicemembers to review their online footprint and to make sure privacy settings on social media accounts limit the amount of personal information available. the obama administration says the american-led military operation has blunted the terror group's momentum in iraq and syria, but it's still grappling with how to stop the isis propaganda machine.

on fox news on sunday john brennan said they're spreading their ideology throughout the region. >> we see what's happening in other countries. they've claimed responsibility for attacks in tunisia and yemen. this is something that clearly is not just restricted to iraq and syria. so we cannot relent. we have to continue working with our partners in the region. >> military officials have been warning servicemembers for some time to be careful about what they post online so they don't become targets, especially as isis continues to call for lone wolf attacks. julianna goldman, cbs news, washington. well, the u.s. is expanding its efforts to train iraqi forces battling isis. hundreds of advisers are working at a military base just north of baghdad. a u.s.-led air campaign has been targeting isis positions in iraq and syria since august of last year. iraqi armed forces and shiite militias have been trying to retake the northern city of tikrit, saddam hussein's hometown. 125 u.s. military were

evacuated from yemen over the weekend and the u.n. security council is considering further action following an ominous report from its special envoy. shiite rebels who backed the ousted president seized yemen's third largest city sunday. thousands demonstrated in the streets. they're battling insurgents known as houthis who have taken over a large part of the cost have ousted the government and formally taken power. the u.n. urged both sides to withdraw. afghan's new president ashrof gnahi is in the united states. he'll meet with john kerry today and president obama tomorrow. and the bodies of seven children killed in a new york fire are headed to israel for burial. thousands of people in brooklyn's ultra orthodox jewish community gathered sunday for the funeral. the fire that engulfed their

home early saturday is believed to have been started by a hot plate. their father who was away at a religious conference during the fire gave a 20-minute tribute to his children. >> he talked about hugging your children and loving your children and treating your children right. he's got seven caskets right in front of his face and he's telling us, love your children. >> the victims are three girls and four boys between 5 and 16. their mother and a teenage sister were also injured. and police say the man who attacked a tsa agent at the new orleans airport was carrying molotov cocktails. a sheriff's deputy shot richard white three times friday as he chased an unarmed tsa agent. he was spraying insecticide and swinging a machete. white died saturday. authorities say the 63-year-old also brought a bag loaded with six mason jars rigged with gasoline and wicks into the airport. well coming up on the

the magazine says it plans to publish the investigation of the article in the next couple of weeks. and this morning lawyers for robert durst will ask a louisiana judge to set him free. they claim he was illegally arrested for the murder of a woman in california as well as drugs and weapons charges. omar villafranca shows us the complicated case. >> reporter: in the hbo documentary "the jinx" robert durst appears to make a stunning admission. >> i killed them all, of course. >> reporter: durst beat a murder case in texas. he's now charged in the shooting death of former friend susan berman. this fbi agent said he heard a confession. >> it doesn't matter if the defense attorney can get it thrown out or discounted. what matters is the jury heard it and they're not idiots. >> reporter: not so fast says attorney thomas mesereau.

>> wait a minute. that doesn't sound like a confession to me. that sounds sarcastic. >> reporter: mesereau represented michael jackson and robert blake. both had made incriminating statements on television. both were found not guilty. mesereau said video could become fire on the prosecutors too. >> i would argue to them if they're allowed to bring in select statements, we should be able to bring in other statements where he exonerates himself. >> reporter: and durst says several times in the documentary he did nothing wrong. >> i had nothing to do with susan berman's death. >> reporter: and this envelope matches the spelling in a previous letter. both misspelling beverly hills. the problem says loyola university lawyer laurie levenson said they initially linking the writing to someone else. >> they explained that away or tried but you can bet that's going to come up again in court. >> reporter: omar villafranca,

today the supreme court will hear arguments in a first amendment dispute involving texas license plates with the confederate battle flag. the sons of confederate veterans is suing because the state prohibits putting the stars and bars on license plates. the court will decide if the state is violating free speech rights. eight other states allow such plates. and on the "cbs moneywatch," starbucks ends its "race together" campaign and the best states for retirees. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. the price of gas is falling. the price of a gallon of gas is down 4 cents in the last two weeks. the national average is now $2.50. analysts say falling oil prices and strong u.s. production are responsible. the asian stock markets were mostly higher on a weaker u.s. dollar. tokyo's nikkei added 1%. hong kong's hang seng gained half a percent. stocks on wall street opened following a strong finish to a

in what is the biggest upset in sunday's action wichita state beats number two seed kansas 78-65. it was the first meeting of these instate rivals since 1993. the number two seed in the east region also went down. virginia falls to michigan state, 60-54. it's the second straight year the spartans have knocked uva out of the tournament. meanwhile the number one seed in the south region is moving on. duke takes care of san diego state, 68-49. the blue devils will meet utah in the next round. and the top seed in the west also advances. wisconsin tops oregon, 72-65. the badgers have a date in los angeles with fourth seeded north carolina. coverage of the sweet 16 resumes this thursday evening starting at 7:15 eastern. notre dame takes on wichita state. after that, top ranked kentucky puts its perfect record on the line against west virginia.

vilified in the history is given a hero's welcome and a king's send-off and richard starkey knows why. >> the british love a loser, and richard iii is the most conspicuous of royal losers. >> reporter: richard had only reigned for two short years after the power grab that gave gained him the throne until his enemies who disputed his claim managed to defeat and kill him, and the grave that he was hastily buried in 530 years ago had been long forgotten, covered over by a parking lot in modern times, but remains discovered three years ago were found to have the curvature of the spine that suggested this could be the infamous hunchback king. and modern dna proved he was. dna supplied by michael ipson, a transplanted canadian carpenter who happens to be descended from richard's sister and who was asked to build the king's coffin.
