noetsz captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, march 25th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning recovery teams and investigators resume their search in a remote area of the french alps where a german airliner plunged into a mountainside. this is what they face. the german minister calls it a picture of horror. jer managewings flight crashed as it flew to germany. they say the black box voice recorder is damaged but it can still provide information. there were 144 passengers and six crew members on board all presumed dead. there was no distress call from

the pilots and the aircraft went through a routine check on monday. >> reporter: this is what's left of a commercial airliner that slammed into a mountainside in the french alps. the germanwings airbus was flying when something went terribly wrong. the plane climbed 32,000 feet. there it stayed for 60 seconds before it began a deep descent which lasted for eight minutes without a distress call. >> we have to investigate properly with all of them with what went wrong. >> either way were trying to solve the many problems they face order they simply were unable to. you must remember the pilot must first try to solve the problem apsd then communicate. >> there is no more pieces. there is nothing. the plane has totally disappear. the degree field is in a high

remote area making retrieval of bodies and wreckage difficult and snow is in the forecast. . but crews have already located one of the plane's flight recorders which could give clues to its final minutes. the news hit especially hard in germany where 16 high school students and two teachers were expected to return from an exchange program in spain. >> i am and the whole town are very shocked at this moment. >> reporter: airline officials would not speculate at the cause of the crash. tina kraus cbs news digne, france. the primary danger will be from severe winds triggered by what's expected to be waves of storm, but tornadoes are also a possibility and flash flood watches are posted in missouri and illinois. and this funnel cloud was

spotted in western missouri yesterday. hail and lightning was also spotted in the area near springfield. there were no reports of damage or injury though. well, the state of massachusetts is asking for federal disaster relief to help cover the cleanup costs following record-setting snowfall. the state wants ten counties to be declared disaster areas following a series of major storms. massachusetts spent about $400 million on snow removal. the state is seeking 75% reimbupeal of aamanda knox in the murder of a student. she and her boyfriend were convicted for a second time. she was found dead back in her apartment back in 2007. knox spent nearly four years in jail during the investigation but now lives in seattle. if appeal is denied prosecutors

could ask for her extradition. testimony on tuesday focused gun evidence they say shows the defendant play add key role in the attacks. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: new video appears to show dzhokhar and tamerlan tsarnaev leaving a firing range last december. an analyst testified the brothers practiced shooting for about an hour with rented 9 millimeter handguns. massachusetts state police lieutenant david cahill told jurors 56 shell casings from a 9 millimeter ruger handgun were recovered from a crime scene where they were in the shoot-out with police. they say that same gun was used to kill mit police officer sean

collier. dr. marv you levitt told jurors the message scrawled inside the boat is consistent with jihadi documents found on his laptop. another one of his notes was shown to the jury, this one a plea to keep his financial aid. he claimed his schoolwork suffered because he lost relatives in chechnya quote, a republican that occupied by soldiers that wrongly abducts men under false pretences and terr accusations. he said he wanted to do well so he could help those in his country.

marleau hall cbs news, boston. president obama has agreed to slow down withdrawal from afghanistan. it's a shift in the plan and it comes at the request of the new government. the president meant with president obama yesterday. nearly 10,000 troops remain in afghanistan through the end of this year. >> we want to make sure that we're doing everything we can to help afghan security forces succeed so we don't have to go back. >> the u.s. forces will train and assist afghan forces who are fighting the taliban and other islamic militants. hundreds of polish residents took to the streets to meet a convoy of u.s. troops. the american military vehicles and soldiers were given a hero's welcome tuesday as they drove through eastern europe. the soldiers to commit suicide. officers were met with gunfire as they approached the apartment building. coming up on the "morning news" now, secret service surveillance video. newly released video offers

on his behalf on march 9th. lawmakers are demandingances about two secret service agents accuse of being intoxicated at the white house this month. the new direct eer said more time is needed to complete the investigation. craig boswell has that story. >> reporter: this is surveillance video showing secret service agents in a government suv nudging a barrier during an investigation outside the white house ott march 4th. lawmakers are angry that additional video hasn't been released or has been deleted. >> new secret service director joseph clancey said video is only saved for 72 hours but he's changing that to one week. he found out about the incident five days later in an e-mail. they were not given sobriety tests. >> this is not business as usual. >> clancey immediately turned over the investigation to the inspector general but lawmakers

on the "cbs moneywatch," one of the most powerful women on wall street enters the tech world, and the x files are being reopened. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. google goes to wall street to find its new chief financial officers. ruth porat worked at morgan stanley for 28 years. she's been the cfo there since 2010. she's the latest wall streeter to defect the silicon valley. her hiring comes at a time when google and other tech companies are under fire for hiring and promoting women. well losses in utilities pushed the stocks lower. the dow lost 104 points yesterday, the s&p fell nearly 13, and the nasdaq finished 16 points lower. a private equity firm, 3g capital, is reportedly in talks to buy kraft foods. kraft stocks soared following a possible purchase.

"the wall street journal" says the deal is likely to be valued alt around $40 billion. 3g bought heinz back in 2013 and would likely merge the two well known food companies. >> federal workers and retirees owe billions in back taxes. the irs says they owed more than $3.5 billion in taxes last year. that's a $2 billion increase over the previous year. workers in housing have had the highest delinquency rate. workers at the treasury department had the lowest, but compared to the general public federal workers are more likely to pay their taxes. a new study looks at the pay gap between men and women in nursing. the university of california research found that the average salary for male nurses in 2013 was about $70,000. for women, about $60,000. now, this is despite the fact that about 90% of the nation's nurses are women. researchers say there are several possible reasons. gender discrimination, men are better negotiators, and women who leave work to have children

golfing great jack nicklaus has another medal to hang in his trophy case. yesterday he was awarded the gold medal. nicklaus is the win over 18 champions including six masters titles and force u.s. opens. nicklaus said all he did was play golf and try to make his family proud of him. >> i'm honestly and completely humbled to be here today and i guess you'd say i'm floored to be standing here? the ohio state marching band performed for the ohio born nicklaus. there is a movement afoot to see that women get their fair share of money, but it's not about getting their hands on more of it.
