good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, lawmakers in arkansas and indiana are working on changes to religious rights bills that caused a fire storm of criticism. the governor of arkansas backed away from his promise to sign the bill. this morning, indiana's legislative leaders are set to meet with business leaders including representatives of the indiana pacers eli lilly and sales force marketing cloud. governor mike pence, who signed the indiana bill faces stiff pressure from the business and sports world to give ground. mark is in washington. good morning, mark. >> reporter: good morning, ann-marie. the white house is weighing in. the indiana and arkansas legislation is, quote, not consistent with the values of the vast majority of americans. indiana lawmakers say they are close to an agreement on new legislation that would clarify

the state's controversial religious freedom law. they worked into the night on wednesday. >> the question is denial of service, facilities and other things. that's what we are focusing on. >> reporter: they are working to add new language to prevent it from using them to discriminate against gays and lesbians. the current version of the law has its share of supporters include ing including ted cruz. >> the law of what indiana just passed, that was passed in 1993, passed nearly unanimously in congress. democrat, bill clinton, signed it into law. >> reporter: a similar religious freedom bill is on the desk of arkansas senator. he refused to sign the bill until it's more in line with federal law. in the state laws, the language is broader and different interpretations.

>> my son, seth, asked me to veto the bill and gave me permission to make that reference. >> reporter: he faces criticism over the state law from businesses, including walmart. he has five days to take action before the bill becomes law without his signature. the ncaa final four is in indianapolis this weekend raising the pressure even more to resolve this issue before tip off. two hours north of there in walkerton, indiana memories pizza is getting threats after its owner says the religious freedom law supports their decision not to cater gay weddings. an assistant softball coach said who is going to walkerton with me to burn down memories pizza. she has been suspended by her school district. police say she may face harassment and intimidation charges. ann-marie? >> thank you, mark.

this morning, gunmen stormed a college campus in kenya. the campus is located in northeast kenya near the somali border. at least two people were killed and 29 wounded. no group claimed responsibility for the raid. a somali islamist group, has carried out attacks including the 2013 attack on a nairobi shopping mall. severe weather is a possibility. there's a chance of thunderstorms from texas to southwest minnesota. large hail and damaging winds are expected. in california, the trouble is water, the lack of water, following years of extreme drought. governor jerry brown imposed the first mandatory water restrictions. snow supplies a third of the state's water. the restrictions follow new that is california's level is at the lowest in 65 years. danielle nottingham reports.

>> the sierra valley snowpack is usually at its high right now. california's four-year draught is alarmingly apparent. >> we are standing on grass and should be standing in five feet of snow. >> reporter: there is no snow to measure at this key survey sight. >> this is the first year in measurements going back to 1942 where the snow course has been bare. >> reporter: water officials say 60% to 70% of the survey sites have no snow. that's why the governor is taking unprecedented action to deal with this drought. >> i'm issuing an executive order. >> reporter: for the first time in california's history, the governor is imposing mandatory restrictions to reduce water use 25%. >> it's going to affect golf courses, people's lawns, universities, campuses, all sorts of institutions. >> reporter: the snowpack, which supplies about a third of california's water has plunged

to an historic low. >> people should realize, we are in a new era. the idea of your nice green grass getting lots of water every day, that could be a thing of the past. >> reporter: governor brown says the new mandatory restrictions could save 488 billion gallons of water over the next nine months. danielle nottingham, cbs news, california. a fishing trawler sank off the eastern russian coast. there were 132 crew members on board. at least 54 are dead and 15 others are missing. russia's tass news agency says it crew may have exceeded the ship's cargo capacity. senator robert menendez is expected to appear in federal court today to enter a not guilty plea to charges of bribery and corruption. the new jersey democrat was indicted yesterday and stepped down as the top ranking democrat on the senate foreign relations committee.

marley hall reports. >> reporter: a defiant new jersey senator, bob menendez answered charges at what sounded like a pep rally. >> i'm outraged prosecutors were tricked into starting this investigation three years ago with false allegations by those who have a political motive to silence me. i will not be silenced. >> reporter: menendez is accused of accepting $1 million in unreported gifts and campaign contributions from a florida eye doctor a long-time friend and political donor. the 14-count indictment include flights on commercial and private jets, caribbean villas and resorts, golf outings and hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions. in return menendez allegedly advocated for him. he received millions in medicare reimbursement.

federal authorities raided his medical offices two years ago. bob menendez is the first sitting u.s. senator to face indictment in seven years. but, he says he's confident he will be cleared. >> i asked my friends, colleagues and community to hold their judgment and remember all the other times when prosecutors got it wrong. >> reporter: menendez is expected to be in court thursday. marley hall, newark, new jersey. in switzerland, the talks to try to reach a deal to control iran's nuclear program entered a second day past the deadline. significant progress has been made but there's no deal yet. depending on who you listen to, a deal is within reach or the talks are near collapse. negotiators from six countries, including the u.s., want to block their ability to build a bomb. robert durst will be in louisiana this morning.

a georgia teenager whose heart transplant gave nationwide attention died in a police chase. anthony stokes died tuesday when he lost control of a stolen car. an officer was pursuing the black honda following a home invasion. he received a transplant to replace his failing heart in 2013. it came after a fight with doctors who reversed the decision to deny him a spot on the list because they didn't think he would follow the treatment plan. 11 educators are facing prison sentences. they were convicted on racketeering charges for their role in a cheating scandal. we have the report. >> we the jury find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: 11 educators were stunned when the verdict came down that could put them in prison for two decades. judge jerry baxter presided over the case. >> they made their bed and they

have to lie in it. it starts today. >> reporter: the allegations date back to 2009 when a state investigation found that 44 middle and elementary schools cheated with nearly 180 educators involved, including 38 principals. according to investigators, they gave students answers and changed answers on tests after they had been submitted. prosecutors claim they were motivated by pressure to keep their jobs or get bonuses. educators tried to report the cheating but had fear from then superintendent beverly hall. hall was indicted, but died less than a month ago of breast cancer. she maintained her innocence and never faced charges. only one teacher had the racketeering charges dismissed. the other 11 will remain behind bars. gerald grigs represents one of the convicted teachers. >> i don't see how you send educators to prison. i don't see that. i don't see fulton county safer

because of that. as an attorney, i respect the jury system. i respect this jury's verdict. i'm trying to figure out which case they listened to for the last seven months. >> of the 35 educators, the most received plea deals of probation and fines. they were convicted on racketeering charges. this is the first time it's happened in an academic trial. cbs news, new york. this morning, duke university is trying to find out who hung a noose on campus. several thousand students gathers in protest wednesday. the university's president said their presence is a rejection of racism. the noose was found on a tree wednesday morning. campus police are investigating. straight ahead, fall out in a road rage case. a cop is caught on tape releasing a tirade on an uber driver. he finds himself now with a new assignment. uber driver. he finds himself now with a new

mcdonald's is raising pay. there are 14,000 mcdonald's in the u.s. the company owns 10% of them, representing 90,000 workers. beginning july 1st starting salaries will be a dollar more than the local minimum wage and workers will get paid time off. restaurants ran by franchises will make their own pay decisions. there have been ongoing demonstrations and lawsuits demanding higher pay at mcdonald's. discouraging reports on jobs manufacturing and construction sent stocks on wall street lower. the dough fell 77 points s&p lost eight and nasdaq finished 20 points lower. alee janet air expects to file suit after the pilots strike. the pilots union will comply with the court order. the pilots say allegiant is

highly profitable benefits have been rolled back. a strike today would have affected some 33,000 passengers. hbo is headed to the internet television service, sling tv. it is the first time hbo offered their content on a live tv service. sling says hbo will be available for the april 12th "game of thrones" season premier. they will have to pay $15 a month for an hbo subscription. a self-driving car arrived in new york after completing a cross country trip. the delphi audi will be featured at the new york international auto show. for most of the journey, the car drove itself. the suv is equipped with a gps, radar sensors and cameras. engineers were along for the ride from california to new york, but they did not drive. >> thanks a lot, jill. when we return, iconic game show

a dash board camera inside an oklahoma school bus captures a scary head-on crash monday. the bus driver pulls to a stop when he spots an oncoming suv. there's no way to avoid a collision. the suv slams into the bus as 60 miles an hour. eight students were hurt, though none of them seriously. police say the driver of the suv suffers from seizures and that may have been the cause. a former beatles and their families are paying tribute to cynthia lennon this morning, the first wife of john lennon. she died wednesday at 75. the couple met in school in liverpool and married shortly been the beatles shot to fame. their relationship ended in 1968 after john met oko ono.

mccartney released a statement wednesday saying she was a good mother to julienne and will be missed by us all. yoko ono says she had a zest. i was proud how we stood firm in the beatle's family. the motown legend was born in detroit. now, that man is helping to rebuild detroit by turning forgotten structures into instruments for change. we have the report. >> reporter: detroit has more than 70,000 abandoned buildings, including this old cadillac plant. all of this old wood is like buried treasure for mark wallace. could you make a guitar out of this pile of wood? >> absolutely. ♪ >> reporter: he started making guitars out of detroit's reclaimed wood a year and a half ago. you like playing this guitar? >> i love playing this guitar.

i do. >> why? >> it's great to know something i built came out of the city of detroit. >> reporter: decades ago, the wood from these buildings came from forests where trees grew slowly. >> they have tight grain patterns. the wood has great resonance and great sound. >> reporter: each guitar is hand crafted and as unique as a fingerprint. he's made 24 so far and hopes, eventually, with a team of craftsmen to produce a couple hundred a year. they are priced at $2,000 a piece. >> it's amazing to take an old piece of wood that's been burned or has paint chips on it and it looks like garbage. most turn it into a dumpster and turn it into something beautiful. >> it's a work of art. >> reporter: he says the guitars are a tribute to detroit's rich music history. ♪ dancing in the streets ♪
