good morning, my name is chris, welcome to mosaic. i worked for the archdiocese in the communications department, i would like to welcome you to our show, we got a chance to talk and catch this man, his name is richard lane, he is the lay catholic evangelist. we will talk about him and the bay area roots and his work very powerful and interesting work. thank you for joining us today. appreciate it. let's get right to it. you have very significant bay area roots, though you live in st. louis now. >> i was born and raised in detroit, michigan, i kind of went to, i went to college in

atlanta, georgia, to the military for a few years, made a stop in alabama, indiana, and then the year and a half in europe, and then in 1988, i got stationed at the oakland army base in oakland, california, lived in oak land from 1988 to 1998. loved the bay area, my daughter was born in alta baits. >> you were here for the earthquake. >> i was here october 17th, 1989. 5:04 p.m. >> we are going to talk about sports connections to the bay area in a second. the focus is the fact you are a catholic lay catholic evangelist. we will break that down and talk about what that means. let's talk about your dad. tell us about your dad. >> dad broke in to the nfl in 11952, a walk on kind of undrafted free agent in 1952.

se set a record -- he set a record. he was traded to the chicago cardinals from 1953-1959 and from 60 to 66 played for the detroit lions, went in to the nfl hall of fame in 1974, name was dick night train lane. >> that father of yours, has raised a wonderful son, we got a beautiful picture of you guys. >> taken in 1993. i'm sorry, 1994, 20th anniversary of his induction at the hall of fame. >> i hear you get to go back there. >> my brother and i get a chance to go to the hall of fame every year, and it's just a wonderful, wonderful time of being able to celebrate dad's legacy. >> the neat thing is, you go back not just as a child of someone in that legacy, but also as a preacher.

people now know you as the preacher. >> yes. >> tell us about the john madden story. >> so i'm out here in oakland, california, preaching, i was preaching in san ramone a couple of years ago, i just got done preaching, after mass was over, one of the ushers comes up and says this is somebody that wants to meet you in the back. i go, it's john madden. i was like wow, good to see you. he said i knew you when you were a kid. i said i was there when you won the super bowl against the vikings. a year later i go to canton, ohio, the first person i see is john madden, he says what are you doing here, why are not not preaching at church. i said how can you are not back at church listening. he is a great catholic guy and goes to church every sunday. he and his wife devout catholics. great, great guy. >> you have been preaching up

until today, you come back to the san francisco bay area, at the invitation of pastors and different churches and been at st. gregories in san mateo, tell us a story about the football connection. >> monday night i go to st. gregories in san mateo, i do what i do, introduce myself to people as they are coming in. this was a wonderful couple, i said my name is richard lane, how are you. he says i'm tom brady. i said great to meet you mr. brady. did your son let you wear one of the super bowl rings, he said i left out at home. he says, yes, we are tom brady's parents. i was like wow, don't i feel bad. i said your son is going to winds up having one of these in 7 years, this was my father's hall of fame ring. >> when we come back we will talk about your ministry, the

basically, i am one that goes around the world, doing parish missions, leading retreats for deacons, priests and laity, i specialize in missions and teaching catholics to the joys of our faith. to be able to live the faith every single day. not just be the frozen chosen, coming to fulfill our holy day of obligation but being that catholic that understands evangelist, the e word, to be able to go out and live out our faith and our calling. >> this is a fire. this fire had to start somewhere in you. tell us about how you got going with this. >> long story short, when i was in the army, i got in, in 1984, i heard my mother's voice, boy you better be in somebody's

church. i was lutheran. i started going to the catholic church. i just started going. then when i got out here to the oakland army base, i found this wonderful catholic church in oak land, our lady of lords, pastored by wonderful catholic priest by the name of father shea mo u.s. wonderful church, they welcomed me with open arms and it was absolutely wonderful. moved to st. louis, got involved with my church there, and then they started talking to me about the things that started with an s and ended with an s, sacraments. you are saids i don'ts have any of those. i went through the r cia process, right of christian initiation for adults and lened what god had been calling me to all my life. i learned the beauties of my faith. i learned that the body and

blood, was in the eucharist. the word of god made flesh in the eucharist and it set me on fire. i becameca lick april 19th, 2 tow 3 and 2 years later in 2005, i go out on the street corners of st. louis and passing out bibles and inviting people to come in to the church. i fell the call to start preaching or talking and the religious education teacher said, let the spirit lead you. i started out with saying a hail mary and our father and began speaking about what god meant to me in my life to others. administering to dope dealers, prostitutes, gang bangers. in the last ten years tings lord brought me from the streets of st. louis to breech the gospel around the united states and south america. >> wonderful. if people would go to a

mission, what is the kind of thing they would experience. they go i heard about this guy. what are the first things they might experience? >> one of the things is a little bit of joy. a little bit of excitement. i try to be, i try to welcome people, i always go and shake people's hands and make people feel welcome. that's one thing in the catholic church catholics are terrible at welcoming people. we are horrible. absolutely terrible. if the baptist want to convert yous they hug on you and love on you until you convert. lutherans will feed youm catholics we make you feel guilty until you convert. we got to show the joy. i love our holy father, the joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter jesus. if we have that encounter, we

give that same love to everyone. that's what i try to bring to my missions. >> what would you say to the folks, how their life, their experiences as a faith, participation in the faith will be different next sunday. what is different about them who have been and heard the message. >> some of things i heard is that through some of the missions i have conducted they have found that encounter, a true encounter with the eucharist, with the holy spirit, with their faith, they have found a true encounter with the word of god, in the bible, the written word of god, in to where they can understand that word of god and apply to it their lives. i have heard so many people say the next time i come wac to church, i can understand the bible a little bit better.

she keeps me warm, she keeps me warm, ♪ we are neighbors and best friends. i love my sister. my heart doesn't see race. love is love. our family is no less than any other family. ok simon what do people wear? clothes. that's right, so it's important to learn how to dress yourself. here's how it's done. shirt, underwear, pants, socks, shoes. underwear always first nametag on the back, then pants, then shirt. go ahead and put this on. now with the shirt you want to make sure the first button's right or you have to start all over again, ok? socks, left on left, right on right. tying the shoes, we're going to take the laces, we're going to cross them over we're going to turn them around where the bunny goes down the hole, pull it tight and bunny ears, got it? [announcer] most parenting is hard to do in just 2 minutes. but 2 minutes twice a day making sure they brush is easier and it could help save them from a lifetime of tooth pain.

call. what i do have is a first peter 315 stire, i have a reason for my belief. it's not because my parents were catholic. i believe in the body, bloods soul and divinity of jesus christ. that's why i'm catholic. i want everyone else to understand that encounter. because i live this and i live this life and i go and minister to so many people hurting. i was ministering in richmond, california last week to a 17 year old young man, in one of the neighborhoods where one of his friends just been murdered. i said how are you living today? he said, ma'am, day by day, today was a good day. nobody i know got killed. >> he says i'm trying to make

it to my 18th birth. that's why we are called. i went yesterday and visited with a 5 year old girl who is suffering from cancer. going through chemotherapy, five years old. she was ashamed because her head was bald. yesterday, i said i will be back in 30 minutes, i went and got my haircut off. >> is that right? >> i have not had my haircut this low since i was in the military in 84. i went back and said guess what, look, i did this for you. you and i are in this fight together and i'm going to pray for you. i don't want to put her name out. there i'm going to pray for her every day and back and visit her and her family and let her know we are hear. it's battle. >> you are walking, responding, listening to the holy spirit where you are at no matter where you are. now, we haven't got on the it yet. we will talk about what that

welcome back to mosaic. i'm here with richard lane, lay catholic evangelist, richard lane ministries.com. richard, we are talking about this how to know god is speaking to you, many catholics received the sacrament, you talk about the sacraments being the nuclear bomb that has been having fruit in your life. when we receive that sack ra men. that's the holy spirit. people forget to open that up. in the catholic church since 1967, there has been the charismatic renewal, which is the outpouring, baptism of the holy spirit. talk about what that really means, how people can open that

up. >> it is. >> that's exactly where i was going. it started 2000 years ago, with these 120 catholic saints, locked in an upper room. holy spirit came down, descended upon them, and gave them the fire to run out, and start proclaiming the gospel. they were speaking in tongues and prophesying, laying on of hands and healing and we lost that way. i don't know why. when we go to confirmation, what we should be seeing in our 8th graders is some very powerful manifestations. we should not be surprised in other words. >> it goes back to ,ker with have to to a better job cat skiing our young people to they understand and have an encounter with the holy spirit. >> it's not a emotional

psychological thing. many people catholics have never had that encounter themselves. so that's why the church has these wonderful ministries outside of the traditional, they have acts retreats, church retreats, christ renews the perish and other ways to be able to come in to contact with the holy spirit. >> simple way is to simply ask. we will do that in a second. pope francis is talking all about this encounter, encounter jesus christ. when you encounter him you can't help but talk to people. before we close, i want to have you say a little word about your ministry and how important it is that you have to raise your own finances and folks, pray for this man, he has a families not like it's taking care of.

you for this time and thank you for all that you have done. i pray that if there is someone right knew within the sound of my voice lacking at me look looking at me on the television, a change in their life. i pray holy spirit you would touch that person right now, i pray that you would send your spirit of understanding your divine spirit of fortitude, strength and council to the person. there is someone that needs your strength, lord. i pray you would give to it the person right now. open someone's eyes and their ears and give them the new encounter with you right now. we ask this in the most precious name of jesus christ. one god, forever and ever, if you believe in the prayer that you just said, i enviet you to say amen. if
