and the last strut. gisele bundchen makes her final trip down the catwalk, retiring from the runway after a to-year modeling career. captioning funded by cbs retiring from modding after a 20-year career captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, april 16th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. doug didn't intend to fly above the most restricted space in the world, but even though he posted his plans on the internet, he flew undetected onto the lawn of the west u.s. capitol. he took off from his small helicopter about 80 miles from capitol hill yesterday. hi approached the capitol from the west flying right over the national mall. hughes says he was trying to draw attention to campaign finance corruption. this morning authorities are trying to figure out how he got so far without being stopped.

edward lawrence is in washington. good morning, edward. >> good morning, anne-marie. on the entire 80-mile trip no adar picked up the gyro helicopter. the u.s. military is looking into why this morning. police surrounded and arrested douglas mark hughes shortly after he landed his gyrocopter on the lawn of the u.s. capitol wednesday. the 61-year-old mailman is expected to make his first appearance in court today. the question is how was he able to get into some of the most restricted airspace without being seen. >> reporter: witnesses say they saw hughes take off from the gettysburg airport in pennsylvania. >> crazy. >> man. >> that guy had to be nuts to do something like that. >> reporter: hughes was able to fly past the white house and the washington monument before landing on capitol hill. but even if authorities had spotted hues they may not have been able to take him down before he landed. >> i don't think there would have been anything warranted. to take him out of the sky would

have created more problems than it would have been solved. >> reporter: hughes had been planning his flight for more than two years. law enforcement wonders why he wasn't stopped before he took off. he was interviewed about his plans in 2013. hughes talked about it with friends. he even made this video for "the tampa bay times." >> i'm going to violate the no-fly zone nonviolently for nobody to get hurt and i'm going to land on the capitol mall. >> reporter: hughes was delivering 530 letters to congress urging them to take up finance campaign reform. many have not received the letters yet. all of those letters had the proper postage. anne-marie? >> edward lawrence in washington. thank you, edward. this morning there are red flag warnings meaning critical fire conditions exist in southern california. the fire in rialto broke out last night. firefighters battled heavy winds

trying to get the fire under control. there are a number of buildings in the area, but so far no damage has been reported. and there has been another deadly shooting of an unarmed man by police officers, this time in houston. it happened following a high-speed chase. the officers believed the suspect was reaching for a weapon, but no gun was found. tim wetzel of our houston station khou says the chase began when police tried to pull the drive over for suspicious activity. >> reporter: a traffic stop led to an intense chaotic chase that went for miles. the driver weaved in and out of traffic. when the police put out stop sticks, he went around them. he slammed into a woman's car. then seconds later, he crashed into an suv. from air 11 it looked like the driver was about to get up. then police say he went back in to reach for something and that's when two officers opened fire. >> fearing for their lives that this suspect was reaching for a weapon, two officers did discharge their weapon at the vehicle, striking the suspect and killing him.

>> reporter: friends and family identify the driver as 41-year-old trey sheppard. >> you know. it hurts. he was a good person who did not deserve to be laid out here like that. >> reporter: sh is his cousin. she watched the chase on live tv. >> this is something that happened to a good person. he's a hard-working man, has four children has two jobs, and is a barber. >> reporter: he said he had a child in the car and threatened to hurt the cops if they kept following. there was no child. they believed that, afraid to shoot. >> hoping the police would work with him to back off so he could have a peaceful surrender to save his life. >> that was khou's tim wetzel reporting. sheppard died at the scene. two schools where the chase ended were locked down for about 30 minutes.

a michigan officer who was seen in a video beating a suspect after he was pulled over in suburban detroit has been fired. dash cam video from the inkster police captured the incident in january. floyd dent the suspect, is black, the two police officers are white. dent was thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched. police say he resisted arrest and had cocaine in his car. accident says police planted the coke. accident is dent is due back in court april 29th. the jurors who convicted former new england patriots' football star guilty. he immediately began serving a life sentence with no chance of parole. he's locked up in a maximum security prison just miles from gillette stadium where he starred on the field. anna werner reports. >> guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: aaron hernandez's mother and fiancee hugged each other and subbed.

after the verdict was read. jurors took seven days to find hernandez guilty of murdering his friend odin lloyd in 2013. lloyd's body was found in an industrial park less than a mile from hernandez's home. he had been shot six times. bristol county district attorney thomas quinn. >> aaron hernandez may have been a well known new england patriots football player, however, in the end, the jury found that he was just a man who commit add brutal murder. >> reporter: hernandez was a rising star for the new england patriots with a $40 million contract, but was dropped from the team after being arrested. most was circumstantial, but there was a lot of it. in text messages hernandez urged lloyd to meet him the night he was killed. a neighbor's surveillance camera captured lloyd getting into a car that prosecutors say was driven by hernandez.

♪ boston paused wednesday afternoon to mark the second anniversary of the marathon bombings. silence fell at city hall and at fenway park at 2:49, the time the first bomb went off. three people were killed and 260 wounded in the bombings. don dahler met a couple whose lives changed forever. >> reporter: in april 2013 jessica kensky and patrick downes had been married seven months when they stopped to watch the marathon. the first bomb destroyed both of their left legs and badly damaged her right. it would be two weeks before they saw each other again.

in the hospital the couple was visited by a group of marines, including b.j. ganham. >> we just went into the hospital rooms and just asked if they wanted us to come in. immediately there was an instant connection. >> and so all of a sudden i see these big strong not so good-looking guys walk into my hospital room and all of them have got prosthetics. in that short time i had been in the hospital i had crossed off all these things in my life that i wasn't going to be able to do anymore, running climbing biking. >> reporter: they were members of the semper fi fund an organization for disabled vets. >> they didn't have to keep coming back. they didn't have to give us hand bikes but they came and gave us so much of a piece of them that will forever be a part of our experience. >> reporter: kensky made the agonizing decision to have her second leg amputated and isn't ready to talk on camera yet. but she did testify in
