welcome to all in, the show that spotlights amazing athletes innovative artists, and unknown heroes. today we're going to start in hawaii, where the ancient art of tatau is still practiced. the tradition is continued by dedicated artists and elders hoping to keep their thousand-year-old culture alive and well in the modern world. 2,500 miles from the california coastline, a string of volcanic islands rise from the cobalt pacific. hawaii, the northernmost outpost of ancient polynesia, is a tourist's dream. for seven million sunbaked visitors a year, this tropical paradise offers unmatched scenery, serenity, and sensational surf, but away from the postcard beaches of waikiki there exists another more

spiritual hawaii that few tourists get to see. the culture of the first polynesian migrants who sailed north to these remote islands nearly 1,500 years ago is palpable here. over the centuries their culture flourished giving rise to the spirit of aloha and many sacred traditions that live on today. laila: a few miles from the shores of west maui, the true heart of hawaii beats as strong as ever at the pacific roots tattoo shop in wailuku. samson harp is a highly respected tattooist and one of the few remaining practitioners of the ancient polynesian art of tatau. through his work, samson gives a thousand-year-old tradition fresh life joining contemporary tattoo culture with the sacred ink of his ancestors. samson: tatau is the ancient method to bring

a mark upon someone, and when you're putting that mark you're not just blasting a tattoo on them. you're putting a veil on them. it's more spiritual. it's one of the few things that we can actually do that walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, and these are one of the things that is very special to us, and we've reawakened to these traditions. it's slow. it's methodical. it's well-thought, and everything comes in unison to one direct focal point. i think we're basically just taking the best of both worlds and making them work to help us move forward today. laila: michael luatongi is a maui police officer and direct descendent of the tongan royal family. to honor his ancestors michael has petitioned

samson to hand-tap the symbolic marks of his ancient bloodlines on his skin. michael: i didn't really know about my family bloodline growing up. we grew up in new york. there was no other tongans over there, no polynesians, so they thought we were like puerto rican or i don't know what they thought. it's good to know who you are and why we do the things we do. so learning my ancestors and how they did things, they used to govern tonga. so i see the traits that i have. i want to make sure no one is taken advantage of. i don't like to see people being bullied you know, stuff like that, try to do what is right. i'm glad at this point in my life that i'm getting the tatau, because as a younger man i probably wasn't worthy to wear it.

laila: today samson has come to discuss the design of the tatau based on the historical symbols of michael's genealogy. samson must take care to learn the intricate patterns that identify michael's family affiliation. a misplaced mark would alter the meaning of michael's entire royal lineage. how are you? come in, brother. this is my genealogy. this was given to me by my mother. so these are all the tui tongas as they run down and all the way down to these two guys, tutaka and fiya. these are the last guys to wear the tattoo in my family actually documented. there was three king lines, the tui tonga tui tanaka bolo, and tui takanawa. samson: i was shocked and at the same

laila: hawaii is a tourist's dream, but as the popularity of this tropical paradise grows, indigenous cultures are often pushed to the fringes of society. for native hawaiians like samson harp, the ancient polynesian art of tatau is a connection to ancestral tradition. samson has agreed to hand-tap traditional tatau designs for michael luatongi to honor the royal heritage of his tongan

ancestors, but samson will need help with the upcoming session. kuaika kuwanga is samson's apprentice at pacific roots tattoo and will be assisting with michael's procedure. as an aspiring tatau practitioner, it's important that kuaika learn the stories and traditions of the sacred art. samson must take his apprentice to visit the elders, a highly regarded council, so they can pass down their knowledge to the young apprentice. [speaking ancient language] samson: i'm excited still, and i've known him for a very long time. laila: sam kai is a highly respected ambassador for the polynesian culture in hawaii. keone nunes is a master tatau artist known as the gatekeeper of this sacred tradition. keone: you have to realize that to carry on the tradition you have to make choices.

sam had to make choices, samson. he had to make choices. sam kai had to make choices when he was young, and often the choices are not easy. sam: something old something now, something expected, that's the way we live our lives. we're not here to go to school to make us different from our family. we go there to enhance what we already are. samson: well, first of all we're very fortunate and blessed to have elders to go to, to talk to, to share our concerns, and perhaps because they're older and perhaps maybe they've made these -- they've had these life experiences they can share with us. and then we're prepared to help the next generation. laila: as a final preparation for the tatau session, michael follows tradition and visits a trusted friend. michael: right now i'm headed to hoaka's

house. i wanted to go let him know i'm getting a tattoo tomorrow. traditions of polynesians, they -- while they're being tattooed they have people that's close to them with them while they're -- while the tattoo session is going on. laila: hoaka is a local stonemason. he carves contemporary interpretations of ancient hawaiian designs in rock. michael visits the respected elder at his workshop in the maui countryside. michael: hoaka plays a big part in my life. he's like a father to me. whenever i have problems he takes care of it. he's like a rock or a foundation for me throughout my life. hoaka: what's happening? michael: nothing much. i just wanted to let you know that we're doing a

laila: artist samson harp has been preparing for his upcoming tatau session with michael. this process requires specific tools, a set of small comb-like moli historically carved from bird bones or boar teeth. each tool is hand-carved and takes up to a month to make. samson: well, i have different tools set up for different types of jobs. it's kind of like anyone doing a painting. you can have different brushes for different things. you have wider, longer tools to do bigger black areas. you have smaller tools to do fine detail patterns. we have -- we have a tool for every special job. laila: maui's iao valley is an ancient battleground, sacred burial site, and spiritual home of the gods. samson comes here to cleanse the waters just

world tour. 24 riders will battle 1,500 feet of brutal terrain for a shot at glory. sweden's martin soderstrom and canada's brandon semenuk lead the standings, but with only a few points separating them, whoever has the best results here will become the world champion. what sets rampage apart from other events is this course, which isn't prebuilt. it's a blank canvas with each rider building their own routes down the treacherous cliffs. the more creative and risky the line, the better they'll score. martin soderstrom rises before dawn, anxious to get mentally prepared for today's qualifying runs. martin: i have so much trouble sleeping before events it's crazy, just going through the run ten thousand times. not sure if my line is even going to work out so yeah, definitely pretty nervous about

trying it. laila: each rider is judged on control, difficulty of tricks big air, and individual style. out of 24 riders, only 12 will advance to the final round. martin: helicopter is in the air, so first guy should probably drop in. man: three, two, one! laila: brandon semenuk's win here four years ago prequalified him for the finals. so as martin drops in, he knows he needs to go all out if he wants a chance to battle for the top spot. a near crash early on sets the swede back, but his total run is impressive enough to land him in ninth place and a spot in the final. martin: not perfect, but ninth place now, and

tomorrow we have a day off, and then it's final. yeah, the big difference from the qualifying to the finals is that we're starting from the top, and up there it's really, really gnarly. it's windy and super skinny, the path we're going on, so yeah, it's definitely going to be a whole 'nother story. i'm dropping in after brandon, so i get to see him, what he's doing and then i can like plan my run after that. so i could be a world champion today. that feels pretty crazy. laila: the stage is set for a showdown between the top two riders on tour. man: three, two, one! man 2: brandon is coming out. here he goes. man: makes it look so easy. man: watch for this next one, massive backflip! oh, no, semenuk goes down! laila: the crash hasn't eliminated brandon, but
