conducts her investigation. protests continue in baltimore and other cities. in philadelphia, demonstrators clash with police as they try to block traffic. the escalation came after hours of peaceful marches. baltimore police handed their criminal investigation to the prosecutor thursday. the results were not made public, but police did reveal the van carrying gray made an additional stop. his family will learn the cause of death today. edward lawrence is in baltimore today. edward, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. all quiet here in baltimore on this third day of the curfew. this morning the curfew will continue through the weekend. authorities stood guard in baltimore overnight enforcing a third night of a city-wide curfew. later today freddie gray's family is expected to learn the cause of his death. w c his death. cbs station wjz will learn he

died as a result of a traumatic injury to his spine after the arrest and suffered trauma to the back of his head. as 10:00 p.m. approached local leaders helped police clear a crowd of mostly peaceful demonstrators off the streets but did little to calm their anger. >> if the state's attorney charge the police for killing freddie, then maybe we could trust them. >> reporter: they say mistrust is building across the country in part all because of the mysteries surrounding freddie gray's ride in a police van. on thursday the police gave their statements to the baltimore, maryland, prosecutor. store surveillance video shows they made a previously undisclosed fourth stop before its final arrival at the police station. >> if with the nation watching three black women at three

different levels can't get justice and healing for this community, you tell me were we're going to get it in our country. >> reporter: prosecutors will now decide whether any charges will be filed. fire crews from all over the state of maryland will be in baltimore this weekend just in case the protested get out of hand. anne-marie? >> edward lawrence in baltimore. thank you, edward. this began more than two weeks ago when freddie gray ran away from two officers on patrol. they caught up with him and allegedly found an illegal switchblade. chip reid shows us how a minor event turned into a major incident. during the baltimore police's first press conference on the death of freddie gray commissioner anthony betts made a promise. >> we're being as transparent as we possibly can. we'll be open, answer questions and bring this information to the public. >> i know that when mr. gray was placed inside that van, he was able to talk, he was upset, and when mr. gray was taken out of that van, he could not talk and he could not breathe.

>> reporter: the implication was that the spinal injury occurred in the van, but four days later deputy commissioner davis turns the foe cause back to the scene of the arrest. >> and that's where the apprehension of freddie gray occurred and quite frankly that's exactly where freddie gray should have received medical attention, and he did not. >> reporter: another source of confusion involves an additional prisoner in the van. >> what the prisoner has told us is that the second prisoner that was picked up is that he didn't see any harm done to freddie at all. what he said was he heard freddie thrashing about. >> reporter: the police deny giving freddie gray what is known as a wild ride to threaten or injure prisoners. but mistakes were made. >> we know he wasn't buck. ed in as he should have been. no excuses for that, period. >> reporter: he admits he's had

to with hold statements because he doesn't want to jeopardize any potential prosecutions in the death of freddie gray, and that tap-dancing as he has called it could be a source of the confusion. chip reid, cbs news, baltimore. now to nepal. the death toll there is just over 6,000. there are also new miracles amid the devastation. new video shows the shock as the quake hit neil a week ago. the traffic camera captures the panic and collapse of a statue in kathmandu. late thursday a woman from her 30s was pulled from the rubble after being trapped for more than five days and seth doane was at the scene of another rescue where they received another teenager. >> reporter: americans worked alongside nepalese rescuers trying to reach a voice from the rubble. they were trying to extract the trapped teen without causing the

hotel teetering above them to topple. >> no, no, no, no no. >> reporter: finding the 15-year-old immerged in a new york yankee t-shirt. we had been following the new york disaster response team all morning. is there really a chance someone is alive under all this? >> you know what? until the person is found and it's confirmed, we will give it a shot. >> reporter: moments later, a member of the los angeles fire department got the call and took off running. andy, can you tell me what we're doing here? >> right now what we're doing, i'm trying to get a general area where they heard the voices. >> reporter: the rescue would take several more hors where the hundreds who gathered could cheer. we found the 15-year-old at an

israeli run field hospital. >> i'm not on the land i'm up in the sky, he told us. as he snacked on oreos, he explained how he survived eating a buttery type food he found. at times, he told us, i felt i was already dead. >> it's amazing to see somebody be freed. it's amazing to be part of that. it is a miracle. >> reporter: and in an otherwise grim landscape, it's a glimmer of hope. seth doane, cbs news, kathmandu, nepal. u.s. commercial ships will soon get some u.s. military muscle in the gulf. a senior official tells the cbs news the navy will provide support through the strait. warships will make sure the ships counter no interference from iran. this week iranian naval vessels reportedly fired warning shots near an international cargo ship and detained its crew. a house budget plan is on its way this morning to the senate for approval.

the compromised republican budget passed in a 226-197 vote thursday. it increases spending in the near term while promising to balance the budget in nine years. the non-binding blueprint also seeks to repeal the president's health care law. court resumes monday in the u colorado movie massacre trial giving jurors a break from the emotional testimony. james holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for the attack that killed 12 people and wounded 70. mark strassmann reports. >> i can see him with the gun, holds it up to his chest. >> reporter: when the shooting started, josh nowlan knelt down to shield a friend. >> my thought process was he was going to search for other people and start going row by row. >> 911, what's your emergency. >> reporter: above him the navy vet could hear an assault rifle

firing, a sound he imitated with his hand. >> people ran out of the theater. they're shot. >> reporter: first responders walked into chaos. the dead and dying strewn throughout theater 9. when the sergeant first spotted holmes dressed in body armor, he thought the killer was a s.w.a.t. team member, but holmes was quickly arrested. inside the theater, he personally checked every body for signs of life. >> i bent down, felt for a pulse. there was no pulse. >> reporter: he found veronica moser-sullivan. the 6-year-old was shot in the abdomen, the youngest killed. he told an officer to get her outside. >> i wanted her out of there, treated.

on the "cbs moneywatch," americans are spending money again and an ipad giveaway. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. consumer spending was up in march. the commerce department said it rose 0.4% as households increased big ticket purchases. the increase followed a 0.5% in february. asian stocks were mostly lower on weak u.s. earnings. tokyo's nikkei was flat. hong kong's hang seng was closed. for a hold. here on wall street investors will be watching more earnings reports and spending in auto sales. the dow lost 195 points thursday. the s&p dropped 21 points. the nasdaq fell 82 points. democrats in congress are pushing for an even bigger increase in minimum wage. the new plan would hike the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020.
