some flipped on their sides trapping passengers under snarled hunks of metal. 243 people were on board. former pennsylvania congressman patrick murphy was on the train. he describing a terrifying scene. >> it was mayhem at first. i was in one car. there were eight or nine cars. i was in the third or fourth car. there was fuse lodge. a lot of people got banged up bad. >> it derailed soon after pulling out of philadelphia's 30th street station. brian webb is in philadelphia. >> notify amtrak to shut down the entire northeast corridor. >> reporter: rescue teams searched through pieces of twisted metal and debris overnight looking for anyone possibly trapped in the wreckage of amtrak train 188. it was traveling from philadelphia to new york city when all seven of its cars

derailed shortly after leaving philadelphia's 30th street station. at least five people were killed. >> it is an absolute disastrous mess. >> keep crawling, okay? >> reporter: 238 passengers and five crew members were on board at the time. many were able to crawl to safety including new jersey resident jane helfman and her son. >> my son went back and got everybody off our one car. he helped them out. >> reporter: more than 100 people were transported to area hospitals to be evaluated or treated for injuries. >> there were concussions, a lot of musculoskeletal injuries. >> reporter: ntsb investigators will join the emergency crews behind me this morning to try to piece together what happened. >> they'll be interviewing the crew, doing a 72-hour history of those crew members, and, of course, they'll attempt to interview as many of the passengers as possible. >> reporter: all amtrak service on the northeast line between new york and philadelphia is

suspended. there is a curve in the track near the crash site but authorities say it's too soon to tell if that played a role in the wreck. anne-marie? >> brian webb in philadelphia. thanks a lot, brian. cbs affiliateilfiliate correspondent kris van cleave joins us by phone. what can we expect from the investigation moving forward? >> reporter: well, anne-marie, once the rescue effort is complete, the ntsb will be leading the investigation, trying to piece together what happened. they're going to be looking to recover a data recorder inside that train. they're going to want to talk to the engineers of that train. they're also going to look at the condition of the rails and the train itself trying to find out what caused the engine and all seven cars to jump the tracks. >> now, kris, amtrak has sus spnlded service throughout this area between philadelphia and new york.

this is a very busy route. this is bound to cause a major transportation disruption. >> reporter: absolutely. it's busiest corridor between washington, d.c., and boston, essentially being cut in half. so we expect significant disruptions today and perhaps for several days to come as the investigation and the cleanup from this derailment begins. >> is it too early to even guess when the rail line might be open again? how long does this sort of thing typically take? >> reporter: well, the ntsb investigation will go on for months not necessarily here at this site. what will have to happen first, they're going to need to go in and assess the cars. at some point they even got to remove the cars from the tracks do whatever repairs need to be done with the tracks through there before they can even reopen that. the mayor of philadelphia said he would be surprised if service resumed this week. >> all right. kris van cleave in philadelphia. thank you very much.

we have a team of correspondents covering the amtrak disaster in philadelphia. we will have the latest on "cbs this morning." overseas now, gunmen opened fire on a bus in karachi, pakistan. the police superintendent says at least 43 people were killed. the six gunmen rode motorcycles. the bus carrying shiite muslims was en route to a community center. so far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack but sunni muslims have targeted them in the past. aftershocks rocked nepal following a second devastating earthquake to hit them in less than a month. at least 65 people were killed by yesterday's quake, and a united states military helicopter is missing. there were sis marines and two nepalese soldiers on board. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. this chopper was flying where

the hardest hit area was. the crew had reported earlier that it was having a fuel problem. a search last night turned up nothing. but it's still not clear if this helicopter crashed. the search resumed this morning. the u.s. chopper like this huey carrying tarps and rice had dropped off supplies at one village and was on its way to another when contact was lost. the earthquake was between kathmandu and mt. everest and sent people running for cover. it sent people scrambling for cover. residents say it looks like a graveyard, so many homes are flattened. the 7.3 magnitude quake also triggered landslides like this one in a rural village. thousands spent the night out in the open suffering through a frightening replay of a deadly quake that struck some three weeks ago. >> we all dived. shaking goes on and on and on.

>> i was afraid of what happened to my house or something like -- hoped nothing happened in my home. i just stayed here. i was very scared at that time. >> reporter: some of the buildings that survived the april 25th quake didn't make it this time. yesterday's quake injured more than 2,000. one government administrator says they're running out of relief material, and to make matters worse, the weather is about to change. >> as people are waiting out in the streets for a long time it's very concerning because the rains are coming soon. >> there are four aircraft searching for the missing helicopter. the death toll from this new earthquake is expected to rise as search crews reach more isolated towns and villages. and, anne-marie at least 16 people were killed when buildings fell on them. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. news that a white wisconsin police officer will not be charged with the killing of a biracial teenager prompted protests in madison. the justice released the dash cam video of the march 16th

incident. we want to warn you. you may find this video disturbing. >> stop right there! don't move! >> the family of tony robinson says they'll fight the decision not to charge matt kenny. robinson robinson's mother says the investigation was not thorough enough. they marched tuesday evening after getting word there will be no charges filed against the madison, wisconsin, police officer who shot and killed a 19-year-old. >> every single life, every single breath taken on this planet is worth something. >> reporter: toxicology reports that robinson had been using drugs when witnesses say he acted erratically and attacked two people on march 6th.

headed from washington, d.c., to new york last night. brian webb is in philadelphia at the scene. brian, what's the latest? >> reporter: well anne-marie crews have lit up the entire area so that they can work through the night. they aren't quite absolutely sure that everyone is accounted for, and like you said, they aren't exactly sure what caused this crash either. we have seen police and fire crews come and go throughout the night, some of them carrying heavy equipment in and out of the area. even saw some members of a counterterrorism team here although there's nothing to suggest that it was nothing other than an accident at this point. all seven cars were off the tracks. those who got up close say it looked like tin cans. some had to crawl out windows. again, five people killed, over 140 injured. train travel service through this area has been suspended. now, ntsb has a go team on the way.

in colorado, lightning struck near denver's city park golf course. a jogger standing under a tree with his dog tuesday was hit by debris that fell on him. police said the man was responsive when he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. there were numerous lightning strikes as a thunderstorm moved through the city. and more rain and the threat

of flooding are expected in the southern plains today. storms are approaching southern and central texas this morning. flash flood watches are posted across the state and parts of oklahoma. four years into a drought, californians are being threatened with fines for wasting water. some wonder why it's okay for companies to make big profits from bottled water that in some cases is taken right from the tap. as ben tracy reports, walmart is the latest company feeling the heat. >> reporter: walmart says its great value water does come from sacramento water supply. they buy it and sell it to other companies. in fact, aquafina arrowhead, and dasani also buy it. bottled water companies use 2.6 billion gallons of the water
