captioning funded by cbs th 2015. good good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. the amtrak train was going twice the speed limit. the train's data recorder indicates the engineer slammed on the brakes but it was too late. the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour when it hit the sharp curve. the speed limit is 50 miles per hour. the engineer has been identified but it's unclear if he's cooperating with investigators. at least seven people were killed, many more than 200 others were injured. rail service along the new york corridor is suspended forcing thousands t seek alternate transportation. crews worked through the night at the crash site. don champion is in philadelphia with the latest. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, alison. while the speed alone is the latest, investigators say it's

too early to tell if it alone caused the accident. ntsb investigators say their work is just beginning. crews used heavy machinery overnight to remove the wreckage from the train 188. they're being moved to a different location for further inspection. two days after the operations of the engineer are being scrutinized. cbs news has learned his name is brandon bostion. it shows the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour at a sharp curve when it should have only been going 50. >> there's no way in the world he should have been going that fast. >> reporter: all seven went off the rails after it left philadelphia's 30th station tuesday night. seven were killed and over 100 were hurt. ntsb investigators say they have not interviewed bostion yet. >> we plan to interview the engineer at the first tournament we can. we want to go back and look at the operation of the train. >> reporter: aside from looking at the actions of the engineer, the ntsb is also taking a close

look at the condition of the tracks at the derail site. they're also looking at forward facing cameras attached to the train. tuesday's accident is the deadliest in 16 years. now some passengers are still unaccounted for. eight others remain in critical condition in the hospital. there's no word just yet when service between new york and philadelphia could resume. about 750,000 people use that northeast corridor every day. alison? >> don champion, philadelphia. thank you, don. we've learned of the identities of five of the passengers killed on the train and the search for one man believed to be on board is going desperate this morning. craig boswell is on the scene. >> reporter: a banking executive, a news industry worker, a navy cadet, an educator and a tech ceo and mother of life all lost their lives here when the amtrak train 188 went off the rails during

tuesday evening's commute. the heartbreak here remains. justin zemser was heading home to rockaway beach, new york. the 20-year-old was on break as a second year cadet. his family heard about the crash while waiting for him to arrive home. >> i went online to see if everything was on time, they said there was a derailment and we kept calling the hospitals and then we got the phone call this morning that my son had passed. >> reporter: defense secretary ashton carter shared sympathy on behalf of zemser's family. >> it's a painful day for the entire academy and all those affected by the tragedy. >> reporter: wells fargo banking executive abid gill lani split his time between washington and new york city. he was a married father of two. as was jim gaines, the associate

information from there and please relay it to us because we can't get that information. so it's very frustrating, guys. very. not that they're not trying but trying and coming up empty, you don't do it. >> reporter: meanwhile the care for those who survived the derailment continues. last night red cross volunteers were at new york's penn station to offer support to about 150 people who were on the train. a spokesperson described many of them as shaken or distraught. craig boswell, cbs news, philadelphia. as we reported more than 200 amtrak passengers were injured. this morning about two dozen remain hospitalized. they described a chaotic scene as hundreds scrambled for their lives. john shaw said the most frightening part was when the lights went out. he said it was the scariest 15 seconds of his life. >> you saw people being thrown out of their seats, luggage going everywhere. it took a few minutes to realize the amount of pain they were in and that's when you really started hearing the screaming.

>> nearly all of those injured had fractured ribs. doctors say that indicates they were rattled around a lot. the house appropriations office is taking heat after talking about cutting amtrak's budget. when wednesday's vote came hours after the crash. they would cut their spend big $251 million. the representative criticized his colleagues for letting the public down by failing to make safety a priority. >> they expect us to fund their priorities, they expect us to watch over their safety when they get on trains planes cars, and highways. and last night we failed them. >> one of the amendments voted down called for $85 million to be spent on positive train control. it uses gps and other controls to prevent trains from going over the speed limit. the stretch did not have ptc but it had been installed on the southbound side of the track. the philadelphia crash was

there is a chance of more violent storms later today and friday. and in houston, texas, drivers had to leave their cars in floodwaters. firefighters were forced to bring a boat to reach people trapped under a bridge. they were able to reach three people and got them to safety. no injuries were reported during the rescue. in nepal the search for a missing marine helicopter resumed this morning. the search is focused 50 miles northeast of the capital. the chopper with eight marines on board has been missing since tuesday. search crews are using infrared technology to detect signs of life. the u.s. has redirected some satellites to help in the search. the helicopter was delivering relief supplies following the earthquake. the taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed five people including an american. gunmen stormed a guesthouse at a party in the neighborhood that's home to the united nations compound. six people were wounded and more than 50 hostages were rescued. at least 70 people are dead in a fire in the philippines.

it burned a rubber slipper factory just outside manila. police said the fire started when sparks from a welding machine set chemicals on fire and caused a huge explosion that caused billowing smoke. bars on windows prevented many from escaping. a bill ending the national security agencies mass collection of phone records is headed to the senate. the house overwhelmingly passed the usa freedom act yesterday. it replaces the nsa program with a system to search phone data on a case-by-case basis. it was in documents that edward snowden released that they secretly collected all phone records became public but key republican leaders in the senate opposed the bill. a bill that would ban abortions is getting steam in congress. the republican-led house lead it. but it faces an uncertain place in the senate.
