captioning funded by cbs this is the this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, may 20th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with tornados and another round of potentially dangerous weather threatening the southern plains today. there are reports of 27 tornados touching down in texas and oklahoma on tuesday. tornado watches are posted there this morning. large hail and damaging winds are also possible. >> look at that. >> due west of north worth, one and possibly two tornados hit the texas town of mineral wells last night. the storm ripped siding from buildings, downed trees, knocked out power, and damaged two nearby churches. several streets are impassable, but there are no reports of injury. >> i seen the funnel cloud start to drop sign the small tail

touch down and things debris, flew up in the air. it looked like it picked up and then head add little bit east. >> the good news is it didn't strike earlier during rush hour as people were getting off work. now to the largest auto recall in u.s. history. the japanese airbag manufacturer takata has agreed to recall potentially defective and deadly airbags in nearly 34 million vehicles. that's one out of every four passenger vehicles in the united states. chris martinez has our report. >> reporter: the largest airing manufacturer takata has agreed to recall cars due to faulty airbags. it doubles the number of cars that have already been recalled in the u.s. >> it's fair to say this is probably the most complex consumer recall in u.s. history. >> reporter: the nationwide

recall covers certain driver and passenger side airbag inflaters that can explode with so much force it sends shrapnel flying through the vehicles. it's linked to six deaths and more than 100 injuries. angelina was hurt when the airbag in her honda exploded. >> i had a hole in my chest clear enough to see through the bottom. >> reporter: kevin dean has filed a lawsuit against takata and honda. dean and experts have test 100 airbags. the damage can be seen in the slow motion vehicle. >> this is the absolute worst automotive defects we have ever seen. >> reporter: it affects 11 automakers. consumers are now being urged to compare their vin numbers with the recall notice online and make arrangements for free repairs with their dealership. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles.

the refugio beach in santa barbara county is closed. an estimated 21,000 gallons of oil began leaking from a broken pipeline yesterday. the pipeline has been shut but the damage is done. britney hopper of our los angeles station kcbs has more. >> whenever you're responding to oil spills, it's not an easy process. i want to manage your expectations. this could take some time. >> reporter: the waves are now black after the coast guard said a pipeline ruptured sending thousands of gallons of crude oil into the ocean just west of santa barbara. >> it's really sad. i hope they can clean it up. there's a lot of damage out there. >> the oil spill happened near refugio beach that's a popular camping spot where dozens of

cam. er were told to evacuate immediately. >> we're going to go home, yeah. we're going to go home. cut it short. >> reporter: video from our shores shows how black the ocean is and cruise working to clean it up. this is a video of two whales about to swim into the oil soaked water and continues were trying to steer them away from the oil. a photographer captured these photos, a duck covered in oil and others trying to help wildlife. >> they came down to try to save as many wildlife and marine as possible. >> it's going to get worse. >> reporter: the pipeline is owned by plains all american based in texas. they gave us a statement. plains deeply regretted this incident had occurred. our focus remains on ensuring the safety of all involved. >> i can't even imagine the cleanup that they're having to do. >> reporter: the pipeline is now secure. no word yet on what caused this rupture.

near santa barbara, california, britney hopper for cbs news. evacuation orders for two louisiana neighborhoods are expected to be lifted the morning. as many as 200 homes were evacuated when a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed near baton rouge. no one was hurt and no oil has leaked. the engineer of the train that crashed in philadelphia had limited experience. brandon bostian had been working on the route for fewer than three weeks. the train derailed after it left the philadelphia station. it was going more than double the 50-mile-per-hour speed limit. eight people were kill and more than 200 others injured. this morning hillary clinton is called on the state department to speed up the release of thousands of her e-mails. the former secretary of state made the appeal in a rare interaction with reporters on the campaign trail in iowa.

parking dispute and someone running over a gang member's foot. a cruise ship with thousands of passengers is free this morning after being stuck on a reef for hours. the norwegian "dawn" was on a round trip cruise from boston when it was grounded. >> the norwegian "dawn" is now free. the cruise ship hit a reef and was stuck off the coast of bermuda for over six hours overnight before a rising tide managed to push it back into deep water. rachel hansen is on board the ship. >> the captain came over the p.a. system and told us he lost steering on the cruise ship and as a result we ran up on a coral reef. >> reporter: it spent three days in port. it spent three days in port. cruise line officials say the ship temporarily lost power but

here's the latest forecast in some cities around the country. in sports, the golden state warriors battle back from a big deficit to take game one of the nba's western conference finals. james harden scored 28 points for houston. the rockets led by 16 in the first half, but the warriors charge back. mvp steven curry pours in 20 points. game two is tomorrow in oakland. and in minnesota timberwolves were the largest winner in the nba draft lottery. it's the second straight year the t-wolves will hold the number one picks. drama in the nhl playoffs as chicago and anaheim duel in one
