up. it was jam packed running 17 minutes over the usual hour. fans of letterman still wanted more. >> the only thing i have left to do, for the last time on a television program, thank you and good night. >> reporter: after more than 6,000 shows, 20,000 guests and countless laughs it was david letterman's final farewell. foo fighters played a song he requested over decades of television history. "the late show" as we have known it since 1993. >> i'll tell you, it's beginning to look like i'm not going to get ""the tonight show"." >> he packed in laughs. >> our long national nightmare is over. >> our long national nightmare is over. letterman is retiring. >> you're just kidding, right?

lunch? >> reporter: before the show letterman waved to fans hoping to make it in for the good-bye. those lucky enough to be inside witnessed the bittersweet moments of tv history. >> i was the last person to get in. one of the folk that is work here said you are the last person to get into the last show. >> reporter: in closing remarks, he shared gratitude and the millions that tuned in for decades. he thanks his wife and son and letterman asked for one thing. >> do me a favor, save a little for my funeral. >> reporter: it was a great show. of course, as one chapter closes here at the ed sullivan theater another will open when steven colbert will take over as host of "the late show." >> thank you very much. praise for letterman is pouring

in. betty white tweeted, we love each other so much. i will miss him so. look out, i'll find him. coe nan o'brien who took over said it's absurd to thank david letterman for all he's done in a tweet, but that's the world we live in now. president obama said it tv won't be the same without dave. an arrest warrant has been issued in the suspect of a murder of a washington family. the family and their housekeeper was found dead thursday. susan mcginnis is live with the details. good morning susan. >> reporter: good morning. this is the house where the bodies were found on the second floor. the house later set on fire. this happened last week. now, a break in the case as the police are able to pinpoint the suspect thanks to a slice of pizza. >> reporter: police are looking for darren william wanted in

connection with arson case in the nation's capitol. he is 5'7" weighs 150 pounds. police matched him to dna found on the crust of a domino's pizza ordered to this mansion. the order came to the home as this man, his wife 10-year-old son and housekeeper were being held captive and possibly tortured. >> when a child is involved it shakes all of us. >> reporter: he came to the house, delivering a package containing $40,000. they are looking into it that the money was an extortion payment. the house, located minutes from vice president joe biden, was set on fire. the bodies of all four victims were found. >> injuries discovered.

blunt force. >> reporter: police have not said how the suspect is connected to the family. the funeral for the three family members happens june 1st. three teenage daughters were away at boarding school at the time. >> thank you susan. an omaha police officer, the mother of a premature baby is dead after a shootout. she died at a hospital shortly after the confrontation wednesday, which left the suspect dead. she is the first omaha police officer killed in the line of duty in more than ten years. investigators at the scene of the deadly biker shootout in waco texas recovered over 300 weapons and still counting. they reopened the shopping plaza where the violence broke out. so far, 118 handguns and assault rifles and 157 knives have been identified. many hidden.

jonathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence officials say inside osama bin laden's hideout in pakistan were shelves filled with american books. he had "obama's wars." how-to books on terrorist attacks. u.s. officials recover handwritten letters that urged followers to carry out attacks. he wrote the focus should be on killing and fighting the american people. there's even an application form. one question do you wish to execute a suicide operation with space for an emergency contact in case the recruit became a martyr. they found thousands of documents in his hideout in may, 2011. letters showed bin laden hoped to make his son the haireir.
