another day of treacherous storms in the southwest, torrential downpours, flash flooding and potential tornadoes all in the forecast after the severe weather system cuts a deadly path through texas and oklahoma. >> i didn't want to get washed away. oh, bounce house! >> 33 children are hurt when a water spout comes to shore in south florida, lifting up the inflatable house they were playing in. a new mega merger in the works, charter communications closes in on a deal to buy time warner cable for a price of $55 billion. and authorities in nevada investigate alarming allegations from the daughters of b.b. king.

they say the legendary blues guitarist was murdered by his associate. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, may 26th, 2015. captioning funded by cbs good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a string of deadly storms that stretches from the gulf of mexico to the great lakes has triggered deadly tornadoes and major flooding. a recovery operation for 12 people missing after a flash flood washed away a vacation home in central texas resumes today. and the severe weather continues this morning. there are flood warnings and watches posted from texas to kansas. and as far east as tennessee. tornado watches have been raised in texas, louisiana, mississippi and illinois. this morning, houston is getting pummeled. a flash flood emergency has been declared. up to 7 inches of rain fell overnight making some roads

impassible and forcing passengers to abandon their cars. the storm knocking out power to 80,000 customers in the houston area are without electrical service. authorities are urging all residents to avoid trouble. fans at last night's houston rockets game were advised to stay in their seat because of the severe weather. many stayed for hours. after the game ended. one woman was killed when a tornado hit southeast oklahoma monday afternoon. it was one of several tornados to hit that part of the state. homes were destroyed and dozens of trees uprooted. and the news was even worse in a mexican city across the border with texas. at least 13 people were killed when a tornado destroyed up to 200 homes. one victim was a baby ripped from its mother's arms by the strong winds. 300 people were injured. omar villafranca has more on the severe weather. >> reporter: drone footage showed what was left after the blanco river in hays county

texas, rose 26 feet an hour this weekend. more than 1,000 homes were damaged and several ripped from their foundation. including one with 12 members of two families inside. jonathan mccomb was found alive 12 miles downstream. his wife and two kids are among the missing. rick helped shelter some of his neighbors who were in danger. >> you could hear the house move off the foundation. and warden said, here comes my house. and within a matter of minutes, his house floated by. >> reporter: rain started falling again monday. raising concerns there could be more flooding. >> obviously, this rain and weather is starting to change gears for us a little bit, we don't know what to expect out of that but we're ready. >> reporter: the state's governor toward the damage and compared the wave of water to a tsunami. >> you cannot candy coat it. it's absolutely massive. >> reporter: in amarillo, a 3-year-old boy was killed when floodwaters flipped a vehicle and he was trapped inside.

in dallas, a 14-year-old boy and his dog apparently drown in a storm drain. >> it's heartbreaking. it's really heartbreaking. >> reporter: elsewhere in the state, there were successful rescues including this kayaker in austin who was pulled to safety. omar villafranca, wimberly, texas. one child is in the hospital in florida after a bounce house the child was in was lifted up with a water spout on the beach. >> oh, bounce house! >> the inflatable playhouse was sent flying by winds up to 85 miles per hour monday. it was blown off the ft. lauderdale beach and over four lanes of traffic. two other children were inside but all were tossed out before the house went airborne. one of the injured girls described what happened. >> i thought i was about to die. i was going to die and then the bounce house flew out with the

wind and i fell in a boat. >> she was released from the hospital after treatment for an injured lip and wrist. and the storm system caused severe rip tides along the florida and mississippi coast. at least three swimmers are missing at florida beaches and one in mississippi. numerous others got caught by the powerful water and had to be rescued. meteorologist larry mowry of our dallas-ft. worth station ktvt said the risk from severe weather isn't over yet. >> it's been a stormy night through louisiana and arkansas that large area of thunderstorms moves through. hearts of ohio, down to the southeast and alabama and mississippi, we've also got the slight risk of severe weather in oklahoma and texas, another round of storms expected there. large hail, high winds even isolated tornadoes as we go through today. 71 million people in the threat zone as we go through our tuesday. here's how it looks hour by hour, storms sweep across parts of alabama reaching georgia by

the afternoon. storms up here in the ohio valley, and two of the storms in oklahoma and texas during the afternoon tuesday those have a pretty high potential of being severe. on florida, it's been the easterly wind which has put the rip current threat on the high side, and that continues through the week as easterly winds continue down here in florida. but nice mild temperature all the way up and down the northeast with highs in the low 80s. i'm meteorologist larry hour mowry for cbs news, dallas. this morning, iraqi forces are beginning the battle to take back the city of ramadi from isis. on monday, iraq's prime minister dismissed comments from ashton carter, that iraqi forces did not have the will to fight in ramadi. vice president biden called the iraqi leader monday with encouragement in the fight against isis militants. in nevada authorities are investigating b.b. king's death as a homicide. officials opened the investigation after two daughters of the blues great charged that he was murdered.

king died this month at the age of 89. his daughters allege that king's business manager and personal assistant hastened king's death with poison. the attorney for king's estate called the claims ridiculous. as millions of americans traveled on memorial day there were threats called in involving various airline flights. one was serious enough that the u.s. air force scrambled two fighter jets to escort a passenger plane. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: emergency crews surrounded two airplanes at new york's jfk airport monday afternoon. both were kept far away from the terminal after someone called in threats. according to investigators the anonymous caller said the air france plane on the left was carrying chemical weapons. it landed after getting an escort by air force fighter pilots. >> we'll stay below 7 we got the fighter in sight. >> very good. reference that you can climb to whatever altitude you're requesting. >> reporter: most passengers

knew nothing until they landed. >> didn't know that at all. >> reporter: did you hear them? >> no, i didn't witness nothing. >> there were a lot of police around, fire and rescue vehicles, we were sure something was happening. >> reporter: officials say no hazards were found on board either plane. similar threats nearly interrupted a flight from england and three planes were searched at newark liberty international airport. one law enforcement source now believes there were about ten threats to airlines monday. authorities at the mchenry state police barracks in maryland say they received a call around 6:30 in the morning with several threats to commercial aviation. they do not believe any were credible. no arrests have been made. marlie hall, cbs news, new york. president obama was at arlington national cemetery for memorial day. ♪

susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. in december, the justice department released a scathing report on the cleveland police department. investigators found that police there were unnecessarily using deadly force and chemical sprays and stun guns. and this news of the settlement comes just days after the acquittal of a white cleveland police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black couple. the acquittal of officer michael brelo triggered a weekend of demonstrations. 71 people were arrested. brelo was one of more than a dozen officers who chased timothy russell and malissa williams in november of 2012. brelo was found not guilty of manslaughter after climbing on the hood of a car and firing more than 15 rounds.

more than 130 rounds were fired at the car. the judge said there's no way to determine if brelo fired the deadly shot. similar deals seem to have a common thread. >> most of these settlement agreements have common terms including improved training. but with this police department they'll certainly have improved training, on how to deal with individuals who have mental illness and have appropriately used force. it's likely the justice department will have training and there's another high profile case yet to be decided in cleveland. whether to charge an officer in last november's shooting of 12-year-old tamir rice. he had been brandishing what turned out to be a pellet gun. in a recent interview, his mother said she's frustrated with how long the case has been under investigation. >> a 5-year-old child came up to me and said the police killed your son. it is the ultimate shake case. >> now, the cleveland investigation is one nearly two dozen opened by the justice

yellen said she's set for the to rise this year. the dow lost 38 points last week, the s&p gained 3. and the nasdaq finished the week 41 points higher. a promotion for apple design guru jony ive. he'll now be the company's chief design officer. ive helped design for the ipad, ipad and smartwatch. he has 5,000 utility patents to his time. he will now span his wealth to include apple's retail stores in new california campus. a controversial t-shirt created a stir for the pacific sun holding company. it features an upside down american flag. the shirts were removed from the pac-sun store in alabama after complaints from a customer. the complaint charged the memorial day display was distasteful and disrespectful.

the complaint generated thousands of likes on social media. and the holiday weekend was abounce at the box office, the lowest since 2001. a big reason was the poor performance of disney's "tomorrowland." the sci-fi adventure opened to an estimated $42 million in ticket sales. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the chicago bears cut ties with defensive lineman ray mcdonald after he was arrested on domestic violence charges monday. police say mcdonald attacked a woman in his home who was holding a baby. mcdonald never played for the bears, the team signed him in march after he was released by the 49ers following an early domestic violence arrest. charges in that case were dropped. in the nba playoffs, the golden state warriors aiming to finish off a four game sweep. of the houston rockets, a win would send golden state to the finals for the first time in 40

today, work crews will try to remove the broken section of pipeline that led to an oil spill on the california coast last week. officials from the company that own the pipeline hope to learn what caused the rupture. up to 101,000 gallons of oil spilld on to a beach in santa barbara. it also caused a ten-square mile slick in the ocean. it killed wildlife and forced the closure of two public beaches. here's another look at this morning's top stories. this morning, the houston area is getting pounded by torrential rain and dangerous flooding. the severe weather is responsible for at least four deaths in texas since friday. 12 people in texas are missing after their vacation home washed away. the storm system stretched from the gulf to the midwest.

at least 13 people were killed when a tornado hit a border town in mexico. and the drought that's gripping california is reshaping the landscaping industry there. businesses are being forced to adapt. but as danielle nottingham report, one sod farmer plans to hold on for the long run. >> reporter: in this home at southern california there are acres and acres of sod. lush grass headed for homes. it's been his livelihood for 45 years. >> people like their lawn you and now all of a sudden, they've now become the focus of all evil. it just makes me nuts. >> reporter: lawns these days are the subject of ridicule. drought shaming is all over social media. even former governor jerry brown is weighing in. >> the idea of your nice green grass getting lots of water every day, that's going to be a thing of the past. >> reporter: california's water board is now threatening stiff penalties for those who don't cut back. are you concerned about paying fines for watering your lawn?
