5:00 am
good morning. welcome to mosaic. chris lyford, i work in the communications department. welcome to our show today. we got a chance to talk and catch this man named richard lane. he is a lay catholic evangelist. we will be talking about him and richard's bay area roots and his work, very powerful interesting work. thanks for joining us richard. >> appreciate it. >> let's get right to it. you have some significant bay area roots even though you live here now. >> i was born and raised in
5:01 am
detroit michigan. i went to college in atlanta, georgia. i went to the military for a few years, made a stop in alabama, indiana, a year and a half in europe. in 1988 i got stationed at the oakland army base in oakland california. i lived in oakland from 1988 to 1998. i love the bay area. >> you were here for the earthquake. >> yes, i was here october 17, 1989 5:04 p.m. >> very deep sports connection to the bay area. you are a lay catholic evangelist. >> yes. >> we will break that down and talk about what that means. i am looking forward to it. let's talk about your dad. >> dad broke into the nfl in 1952. he was a walk on kind of
5:02 am
undrafted free agent in 1952. he set an nfl record that year of most intersept ions in one season. a year later he was traded to at the time the chicago cardinals. he played for them from 1953 to 1959. from '60 to '66 he played for lions. i went into the nfl hall of fame in 1974. >> that father has raised a wonderful son. >> thank you. >> we have a beautiful picture of you. great shot. was taken in 1994, the 20th anniversary of his induction at the nfl hall of fame in canton. >> i hear you get to go back there every once in a while. >> yes. my brother and i get a chance to go every year and it's a wonderful time of being able to celebrate dad's legacy. >> the neat thing is that you go back not just as a child of someone in that legacy but also
5:03 am
as a preacher. people now know you as preacher. >> yes. >> tell us about the john madden story. >> i am in oakland california preaching. i was preaching in san ramone a couple years ago. after mass was over one of the ushers says there is somebody that wants to meet you in the back. i said fine. i go and it is john maddon. i said good to see you. he said i knew you when you were a kid. i said i was there when you won the super bowl against the vikings. a year later i go to canton, ohio and the first person i see is john maddon. he says what are you doing here? how come you are not preaching at church? i said how come you are not at church listening? he is is great catholic guy, goes to church every sunday. he and his wife are very devout catholics. a great guy.
5:04 am
>> you have been preaching until today. we are recording this on the 25 25th of february. you come back to the san francisco bay area at the invitation of pastors and churches and you have been at st. gregory's in san mateo. tell us about the football connection. this is last night. >> yes. monday night i go to st. gregory in san mateo. i am introducing myself as they come in. a wonderful couple came in and he says hi, i am tom brady. i said great to meet you. did your son let you wear one of the super bowl rings he's got? he said i left it home. he says yes, we are his parents. i said don't i feel bad. i said your son will have one of these in about seven years, my father's nfl ring.
5:05 am
5:06 am
welcome back to mosaic. my name is chris lyford. we are here with richard lane, a lay catholic evangelist. richard i really want to get right to this. the name lay catholic evangelist, let's talk about that. >> lay is meaning i am not a priest or deacon. catholic evangelist, some baptist and nondenominational friends tease me saying isn't
5:07 am
that an oxy moron? catholic evangelist? funny. basically i go around doing parish missions, leading retreats for deacons and priests. i specialize in parish missions and teaching catholics the joys of our faith, to be able to live the faith every single day, not just be the frozen chosen coming to fulfill our holy day of obligation but really being that catholic that understands evangelization, that e word, to be able to go out and live out our faith and our calling. >> this is a fire. this fire had to start somewhere in you. tell us about how you got going with this. >> long story short, when i was in the army, i got into the army in 1984 and i heard my mother's voice in the back of my head boy you better be in
5:08 am
somebody's choice. i was raised lutheran. i didn't like protestant services. they had catholic services. i started going to the catholic church. i just started going. then when i got to the oakland army base i found this wonderful cath lecture much in oakland our lady of lordes roman catholic church. i started going there. it's a wonderful church. they welcomed me with open arms. i moved to st. louis and got involved with my church there. they started talking about these things that started with an s and ended with an s. sacraments. i said i don't have any of those. i went through the rcia process, rite of christian initiation for adults. i learned what god had been calling me to all my life. i learned the beauties of my
5:09 am
faith. i learned that the body and blood soul and divinity was in the eucharist, word of god made flesh in the eucharist. that set me on fire. i became catholic april 19, 2003. two years later in 2005 i go on the street corners of st. louis and pass out bibles and am inviting people to church to come and worship as evangelization effort. i felt the call to start preaching or talking and the religious education teacher said let the spirit lead you. i started saying a hail mary, our father. then i began speaking about what god meant to me in my life to others. i was ministering to dope dealers, pimps, prostitutes, gang bangers. it was wonderful. the lord has brought me from the streets of st. louis to be able to preach all around the united states and south
5:10 am
america. >> wonderful. if people would go to a mission, what's the kind of thing they would experience? they go oh i have heard about this guy. i am not sure. what are some of the first things they'll experience? >> one of the first things is a little bit of joy and a little bit of excitement. >> refreshment. >> yes. i try to welcome people. i always go and shake people's hands and make people feel welcome. in the catholic church, catholics are terrible at welcoming people. we are horrible, absolutely terrible. >> gotta work on it. >> we really do. if the baptists want to convert you, they hug you and love on you. lutherans, they'll feed you until you convert. catholics, we make you feel guilty until you convert. it's got to be different. >> yeah. >> we've got to show that joy. i love our holy father, joy of the gospel fills our hearts and
5:11 am
lives of all who encounter jesus. if we have that encounter then we give that same love to everyone. that's what i try to bring in my parish missions. >> what would you say to the folks upon the end of the mission how their life, experience of the faith, participation of the faith will be different the next sunday? what's going to be different about them who have been and heard that message? >> some of the things i have heard from people is through some of the pair issue missions i have -- parish missions i have conducted they have found that true encounter with the eucharist, with the holy spirit, with their faith. they have found a true encounter with the word of god in the bible, the written word of god to where they can understand the word of god and apply it in their daily lives. i have heard so many people say next time i come back to church, now i can understand
5:12 am
the bible a little bit better. i am able to go and read it and able to understand how it applies to my life. i am able to be in connection, a better connection with god in prayer through the holy spirit, asking for all the blessings and understanding that comes with our faith. >> i bet you the faces of those people look different. >> they do. they really do. >> that is infectious. the actions and calling. i would imagine people get called into ministry kind of like you were, activated the gifts of the holy spirit. maybe we'll talk about the gifts of the holy spirit next segment. they realize gosh i have been missing this life of joy, the serving. >> it's kind of like a yawn. one person yawns and then it is infectious. everyone starts to yawn. this fire that is given to us
5:13 am
by the holy spirit is infectious as well. other people see that love in you. where did that light come from? i want to go through that. chris has gone through so many battles but he is still standing and smiling. how does he do that? it's not me. it's the god within me. it's the lord's strength in me. >> that's it. we are talking with richard lane, lay catholic evangelist. if you want to find out more, richardlaneministrys.com. >> that's correct. >> that is a great place to start and maybe make contact and maybe ask him to come to your parish, a parish mission a couple days. you can schedule that in advance. you can be the person that brings that spark that perhaps lights that fire. you have watching mosaic. i'm chris lyford. that's richard lane. we'll be right back.
5:16 am
welcome back to mosaic. my name is chris lyford and my guest is richard lane. richard is a lay catholic evangelist. we will talk about what that means. let's talk about your shirt. >> this is a logo for richard lane ministries. the ministry has been going on for ten years. going into 2015 we are celebrating ten years of ministry. so i kind of rebranded everything. originally the ministry was known as qorban ministries, a hebrew lex gone for being dedicated to god. we are dedicated to god. everything that we do gives god glory. >> just upon hearing that statement, people would say i don't know about me. i am not sure. maybe for you.
5:17 am
you are really holy. >> i've got holes in my head, holes in my socks. >> he's got a gift. i can listen to this guy. what does it mean to say that everyone is called to be set aside? >> everyone is called. jesus called everyone. every baptized christian is called to proclaim the good news. it's not just up to the priests, deacons and the religious. i am not a holy guy. i am far from holy. but god can use anyone. a lot of people think noah had to be a holy guy because god used him to repopulate the world. no, noah was a drunk. they say moses had to be holy because god used him to free his people. moses was a murderer. i am too old to do anything. abram was 75 and god says i am going to make you a father of
5:18 am
many nations. we are all called. it's a universal call. we are just regular people. i am just a regular guy. i don't have a ph.d in sacred theology but what i do have is a first peters 3:15 story. what i do have is a reason for my belief. if someone asks me why i am catholic it is not because my parents were catholic or i was baptized. i am cath like because i believe in the eucharist, believe in the body, blood, soul, divinity of jesus christ. that's why i am catholic. i want everyone else to understand that encounter. i live this life, and i go and minister to so many people that are hurting. i was ministering in richmond, california last week to a 17 year old young man in one of the neighborhoods where one of his friends had just been murdered. i said how are you living? he said "day by day." he said today was a good day.
5:19 am
nobody i know got killed. i am just trying to mayk it to my 18th birthday. that's why we are called. i visited with a five year old girl suffering through cancer, going through chemotherapy, five years old. she was ashamed because her head was bald. i went and got all my hair cut off. i have not had my hair cut this low since i was in the military in '84. >> is that right? >> yes, i said i did this for you. you and i are in this fight together and i will pray for you everyday. >> what's her name? >> i am not going to put her name out but i am going to pray for her everyday and go back and visit her family and let them know we are here. it's a battle, and god calls us all in the battle. >> you are walking, responding, listening to the holy spirit right where you are at, no matter where you are. >> yes. >> we haven't gotten to this.
5:20 am
we will talk about what that means on a practical level but we are also going to talk about what that means on a spiritual level. how do we know jesus is calling us? i hear people say the lord spoke to them. how do they hear that? an ear piece? we are going to talk about that. >> didn't get the e-mail? didn't get the tweet. >> no tweet, no memo, no telegram. >> i got the tweet. >> no fax. we will talk about how us normal people, everyone, hear god speak directly to their heart and their mind so as to direct them into a ministry in their own lives. we are going to talk about that. you are watching mosaic. my name is chris lyford. we'll be right back.
5:21 am
did you know kids who play outdoors have healthier lungs? totally. i did. did you know that boys that play with dolls make better husbands? my son has lots of dolls. but did you know terry cloth diapers breathe better? i did. oh, yeah, yeah. did you know that strollers have the right of way on a sidewalk? yes. yup, i did. did you guys know-- did you know that kids who eat breakfast have higher gpas? yeah, i know. yeah. that's actually what i was going to say. did you know babies should never touch silver? it's really bad for them.
5:22 am
i knew that. did you guys know that statistically friendly kids have more friends? mm-hmm. that's obvious. did you know most people think they're using the right car seat for their kid, but they're not? announcer: parents who really know it all know for sure that their child is in the right seat at the right age and size. visit safercar.gov/therightseat to make sure your child is protected. i'm putting that on my blog. i just put it in mine.
5:23 am
>> welcome back to mosaic. my name is chris lyford. i am here with richard lane, a lay catholic evangelist, richardlaneministrys.com. we were talking about how to know god is speaking to you. many catholics received the sacrament of confirmation. you talk about sacraments being the nuclear bomb of spiritual growth, having fruit in your life. when we receive that sacrament of confirmation that's the holy spirit poured over us. many people forget to open that up. in the catholic church since about 1967 there has been the charismatic renewal which is the outpouring, baptism of the holy spirit. talk a little bit about what that means and how people can open that up. i know it's a big topic.
5:24 am
>> it really is. it all started 2000 years ago with these 120 catholic saints locked in an upper room and the holy spirit came down and descended upon them, gave them the fire to run out and start proclaiming the gospel. they were speaking in tongues. they were prophesying, healing. somehow we lost that way. i don't know why. >> when we go to confirmation what we should see in our sophomores in high school is some very powerful manifestations. >> exactly. >> we should not be surprised in other words. >> it goes back to catechesis. we have do a better job with our young people so they understand and have an encounter with the holy spirit. >> this is not an emotional
5:25 am
psychological thing. this is actually meeting jesus. >> exactly. many people, catholics, have never had that encounter themselves. that's why the church has these wonderful ministries outside of the traditional. they have acts retreats, christ renews the parish, other ways to be able to come into contact with the holy spirit. >> a simple way is to simply ask. we will do that in a second. >> exactly. >> you remind me, pope francis is talking all about this encounter. en counter jesus christ. when you encounter him, you can't help but talk to people. >> right. >> before we close i want to have you say a word about your ministry and how important it is. you have to raise your own finances. folks, pray for this man because he's got a family. it's not like it is taken care
5:26 am
of once you say yes. in fact it might be harder. how can people support you? >> if they want to support they can go to richardlaneministrys.com. you can reach us on the website. there is a link on how you can go -- or you can go to gofundme.com/richard lane. you can do a search on go fund me. if you are looking for a parish mission, invite me. go to the website. i will be more than happy to come to your parish and do a parish mission and be able to help in evangelization at your particular church. >> let's do a little evangelization. i would like to ask you to close out with a prayer and maybe somebody is watching this and they say i would like to actually ask the holy spirit. i don't know how to do it. maybe you can lead us. >> in the name of the father,
5:27 am
son, holy spirit. lord we thank you for this time and thank you for all that you have done. father god i pray if there is someone right now within the sound of my voice that's looking at me on the television, that is looking for a change in their life, that's looking for something greater than themselves, i pray holy spirit that you would touch that person right now. i pray that you would send your spirit of understanding, your divine spirit of fortitude, strength and counsel. there is someone that needs your strength. i pray that you give it to that person right now. open someone's eyes and ears and give them that new encounter with you right now. we ask this in the most precious name of jesus the christ who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god forever and ever. if you believe in the prayer that you have just said, i invite you to say the one word,
