the search expands. the massive manhunt for two escaped inmates now includes the state of vermont as authorities say the convicted killers may have gotten help from a woman employed by the prison they broke out of. and an american is killed fighting isis. the massachusetts native dies in syria while battling the tear roar group. >> my understanding is he was motivated by what he saw on tv and it spurring him into action. it's coming up the second floor. i mean it's so high up. >> and desperate calls for help. 911 recordings are released from last month's deadly floods in texas. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, june 11th, 2015.

good morning. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning the search for two escaped killers has expanded to the east. investigators have learned that david sweat and richard matt had talked about heading to vermont before they broke out of maximum security prison in new york. hundreds of officers are searching for the pair, but six days into the search officials still have no real idea where they are or what they're doing. don champion has the latest. >> reporter: you're aware of the escapees from new york, right? authorities in vermont pounded the pavement late into the night handing out "wanted" poster. they're both wanted for doing murderers. they're not nice people. and searching campgrounds for richard matt and david sweat. >> we've had plenty of peach approach us that we don't know. it's just what you do in the camp ground. >> reporter: the hunt has grown across state lines and has grown more intense.

>> they're killers, they're murderers. there's no reason to believe they wouldn't do it again. >> reporter: investigators have expanded their search to the border of new york and vermont after learning the inmates talked about how there would be less police on the ground to search for them. >> we have information to suggest that they thought that new york was going to be hot, vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that joyce mitchell, an employee at the facility was allegedly supposed to pick up the prisoners after they broke out. instead mitchell sought treatment for a panik attack. so far she's not been named a suspect. don champion, cbs news, essex, new york. this morning we've learned of increasing police activity near the town of cadyville new york. don champion is there right now. he joins us on the phone. what can you tell us? >> good morning. while we haven't been told of new sightings, we're told there is increased police presence in

the town of cadyville, which is near where the prison is. residents have been told to lock their doors and turn on their interior lights. it is clear, alison, that in terms of the search they're not take any chances when it comes to finding the dangerous men. >> don champion for us headed to the scene. thank you again this morning. an american fighting isis militants in syria has been killed. keith broomfield travelsed a few years ago to join kurdish forces to fight islamic militants. mark albert joins us. good morning, mark. >> good morning, alison. he is apparently the first u.s. citizen to die fighting with kurdish forces in their battle against isis extremists. broomfield was killed on june 3rd, according to a group of kurdish fighters known as the

ypg. a spokesman said he joined them in late february under an assumed name. he reportedly died near a border town north of kobani. kurdish fighters have been able to blunt the isis expanse. the state department has confirmed broomfield's death. >>s out of respect for mr. broomfield's family, i don't have any details to provide at this point. >> reporter: those who knew broomfield say he had no military background but was inspired after seeing what isis did to his victims. >> my understanding is he was motivated by what he saw on tv and it spurred him into action. it says a lot for someone to be motivated to get behind a cause like that and try to do something. >> reporter: a woman believed to be broomfield's sister shared her final exchange with him on her facebook page. in a series of text messages broomfield said he did not expect anyone to understand why

he went to the middle east, and in his last message told her "i got this." a british citizen, an australian, and a german woman have also died fighting with the kurds. the state department tells cbs news the u.s. government does not support american citizens going to the middle east to fight with any group. alison? >> mark albert in washington. thank you, mark. the united states is upping the ante in the battle against isis. president obama ordered up 400 more troops to the mission in iraq. their misch is two-fold. that is seen as a critical element in the battle against isis in iraq. parts of the midwest and southeast face a threat of severe threat of weather today. thunderstorms are possible from the central plains to the great lakes. they could bring large hail and damaging winds. storms are also in the forecast for florida. residents in northern florida are cleaning up storm damage this morning. a tornado slammed into buildings

near the community of elgin wednesday. it tore into a metal building and spread debris across a potato field. there are no reports of injuries. a camera from cbs affiliate wpec captures a scary scene in florida. a pair of dramatic lightning strikes on you timt poles light up the road for drivers in martin county. and now an update on the deadly amtrak derailment in philadelphia last month. safety investigators say the engineer was not using his cell phone to talk or text just before the train jumped the tracks. the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour in a 50-mile-per-hour zone. eight people were killed and about 200 people injured. now to the investigation of the murder of a wealthy family and their housekeeper. just released court papers appear to show a baseball bat with what appears to be covered in blood was recovered at the

mansion. it was found in the bedroom. one victim had apparent head trauma. suspect daron wint was arrested and charged with murder. eric casebolt apologized for miss actions at a pool in mckinney texas. at one point he pulled his gun. his lawyer said earlier in the day he responded to two suicide calls and let his emotions get the better of him. >> the nature of these two suicide calls took an emotional toll on eric casebolt. and the lawyer who represents the girl he threw to the ground said stress is not an adequate defense. activists want charges brought against casebolt. in the trial of james holmes, a former girlfriend jahda bakari described him as

then at 11:11 that night the families visiting wimberley from corpus christi reached out for help. >> what is your name? >> laura, l-a-u-r-a, mccomb, m-c-c-o-m-b. >> reporter: mccomb described to the operator the water was coming up to the second floor. >> it's coming up to the second floor. it's so high up and we don't have an exit. >> make sure you don't go to the attic so you don't get stuck, okay? >> reporter: laura mccomb and others were staying in the house over the weekend. about 15 minutes after her call, a man who doesn't identify himself makes another phone call to emergency dispatchers. >> reporter: a few minutes later at 11:29, a third call is made. a woman can barely be heard telling emergency workers the house is down, they're floating.

the next call made to 911 a man staying nearby reports seeing a house floating down the river with someone inside. those calls are just some of the hundreds made that night. >> it stopped a good 25, 30 feet right now. we've left our house. >> reporter: people asking for help with evacuations, describing roads washed out, seeing vehicles in the water. it shows how overwhelmed rescue crews became as the rain would not let up. >> that's ktiv's matt reporting. nine bodies were recovered. one of the victims, laura mccomb. the bodies of james and his dog were inside the car. the 72-year-old just bought the 2007 corvette. the electric door locks became disabled. police think rogers didn't know how to manually locked them. temperatures inside the car

in l.a., and a throwback for pepsi. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, alison. ? what might have been a late-night desperate attempt for talks in what may be a push toward the green crisis talks were held that greece has three weeks to conclude a deal before its bailout deal expires. meanwhile standard & poor's has downgraded it to junk stocks. the dow rallies for 236 points, its biggest one-day gain in more than a month. the s&p climbed 25 points and the nasdaq composite finished 62 points higher. also of note here on wall street stocks of the internet video service netflix soared to a new high after shareholders cleared the way for a new stock split. netflix rose nearly $25 a share. share prices have doubled in price this year. the los angeles city council

gave final approval to raising the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour. the bill is expected to be signed into law saturday. it will take the minimum wage from $9 an hour to $15 in five years. small companies would get an extra year to comply. opponents warn the ordinance will cause layoffs or force businesses out of the city. here in new york city, the design for the last building to be built at the world trade center side has been revealed. 2 world trade center will be an 80-story tower and looks like a set of search stacked boxes. it's set to be open in 2020, but leases have not been negotiated an construction of the tower has not been a certainty. taco bell is talking millennial. taco bell executives are studying the language of millennials in an effort to understand the important customer base. there's a millennial word of the week at taco bell's california headquarters. >> and a comeback for a soft

police in britain are investigating a literary whodunit. a copy of e l james' "fifty shades of grey" has been stolen one week before its publication. they're concerned the highly anticipated novel will be leaked. the story details the story of billionaire christian grey. game four in chicago last night. tam pay bay ties the game up at 1-1. alex killhorn is left in front of the net, but in the third brandon saad puts them ahead for good. it gives the blackhawks a 2-1 win.
