a new twist in the murder of a san francisco woman allegedly at the hands of an immigrant. the gun is traced back to an agent. so i walked into a subway and made a plan. subway cuts ties with longtime pitchman jared fogle after authorities raid his home as part of a child pornography investigation. a small plane crashes killing two people and cropping fiery debris onto the ground. >> i saw kind of a flash and looked up. it was right in front of me. >> there was a little moment of scare when one of the grounds crew was tangled up in there.

>> and a team effort. high winds lift up the tarp during a rain delay. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, july 8th, 2015. good morning and thanks for joining us i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. this morning an unexpected twist in the murder of a san francisco woman. the gun usedd to kill katherine steinle e belonged to a fedederal agent. the suspecect said he found the gun. as of our san francisco station kpix reports, law enforcement officials are trying to fill in all the blanks. >> there are a lot of questions being raised by our investigation. where did the gun come from. >> reporter: sources appear that the gun used to kill kate steinle on the pier belonged to

an agent. >> we can confirm mr. sanchez did not know miss steinle and he had no reason to want her to be harmed in any way. >> reporter: the .40 gun had been found stolen during a car burglary just last month. sources tell kpxi that they trace it back to an agent. earlier in a jailhouse in thor view with telemundo he admitted to shooting steinle with a gun found wrapped under a bench in a t-shirt. >> mr. sanchez is not a student of the law. he has a second grade education and many of the legal nuances and the legal ramifications that attend to the circumstances of this case are yobld his current

suv. the fire department had to extend a ladder to reach her. she was okay. this was one of more than 30 water rescues in the city. this morning the military and federal investigators are looking into the deadly collision of a fighter jet and a small fighter plane. the military plane crashed into a cessna on tuesday. >> reporter: the f-16 fighter jet and small plane collided 20 miles north of charleston. debris rained down. a piece landed against a mobile home. cliff cannon was driving in the area when it happened. >> i saw a flash and looked up. it was right in front of me. as soon as i saw it was an explosion, a lot of black smoke, debris tagging. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board said two people on the civilian plane did not survive.

>> the pilot of the fighter plane ejected just behind that treeline and appears to be okay. >> reporter: the ail force said the experienced military pilot was on a training exercise and was in constant traffic with air traffic control when the planes collided. >> there are a hundred factors that could have happened. >> reporter: the ntsb and air force are investigating. omar villafranca, cbs news monks corner south carolina. the house will begin debating today on removing a confederate flag on the grounlds. they invited a colleague of clementa pinckney to the senate floor. dylann roof faces three counts of attempted murder. he already faced nine counts for the attack last month.

federal investigators served warrants with regard to a child pornography investigation. >> i thought he was a normal neighbor so it's weird to see this happen. >> it's strange. i can't picture him at that kind of guy. >> reporter: earlier this year this man was arrested in the child pornography case. fogle's attorney has released a statement. jared has been cooperating with law enforcement and its investigation of certain unspecified activities and looked forward to its conclusion. jared has not been arrested detained, or charged with anything. back in april fogle cut all ties with russell immediately after the allegations surfaced. >> that was wttv's charlie due mar reporting. >> this morning a tennessee man is charged with plotting a hack on aor the senate last year.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the university of maryland baltimore is telling students to use caution after three people were shot dead near the campus last night. a fourth victim is in the hospital. baltimore police say two gunmen pulled up in vans and started shooting. cbs news has learned the u.s. is planning a big troop reduction despite the fight against isis. the army will trim 40,000 trip troops over the next two years. under the plan the army would reduce its strength to 450,000 soldiers. that's down from a peak of 58 570,000 in the wars in iraq and afghanistan. on the "cbs moneywatch," the deb crisis and a new way to cruise to cuba.

jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange. good morning, jill. >> good morning, alison. they have given greece a final deadline. come up with money-saving proposals to come up with a plan against financial collapse or face sanctions sunday. greek officials came to the table empty-handed. on sunday leaders of all 28 european members will hold a final summit to present the proposal. markets ended higher. the dow gained 93 points, the s&p rose 12, the nasdaq finished the day 5 points higher. the drugstore chain cvs is resigning from the u.s. chamber of commerce following the news that the chamber has undertaken a global lobbying campaign against anti-smoking laws. cvs said it was surprised to see that outside the united states. last week "the new york times" reported they had lobbied restrictions. on tobacco sales.

a federal judge in new york has ordered time warner cable to pay a woman nearly $231,000 after she was harassed with 153 robocalls. the texas woman sued last year after repeatedly asking the company to stop. time warner says it is reviewing its options. a group of airline passengers is suing the four major airlines for price fixing allegations. lawsuits charged united delta, and southwest of working together to keep the prices artificially high. lawsuits looked into investigations of alleged collusion. the airlines deny the charges. carnival cruise lines says it hopes to offer trips from miami to cuba by next may. carnival ceo made the announcement on "cbs this morning." they'll be the first to visit cuba since the 1960 trade embargo. passengers would have to spend
