george h.w. bush is hospitalized overnight. the former president is stable this morning after suffering a broken neck bone in a fall. >> iran will not be in a position to develop a nuclear bomb. president obama challenges the critics of the nuclear agreement with iran but many skeptical republican lawmakers still need convincing before signing off on the deal. pluto's premiere. a nasa space probe beams back the first close-up pictures of the dwarf planet from 3 million miles away. >> this transition has been

harder on me than anything i could imagine. and caitlin's courage. she makes a public comment from a man to a woman. >> it's not just about me. it's about all of us accepting one another. captioning funded by cbs captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday july 16th 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president george h.w. bush spent the night in a maine hospital where he's being treated for a broken bone in his neck. he is listed in stable condition. president obama fell at his summer home in kennebunkport yesterday morning. he was brought by ambulance to portland's maine medical center. wendy gillette is here in new york with the details. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. a spokesman said the former president will have to wear a

neck brace, but he's fine. at 91 years old he's the oldest living president. this is the latest health setback for mr. bush. he was hospitalized for about a week in december for shortness of breath and earlier he was hospitalized for a bronchitis-related cough. he served two terms as ronald reagan's president. he served one time before being defeated by president bill clinton. he's a former ambassador to china and former cia director who was shot down in the pacific while acting as an aviator. his spokesman said the former president is not expected to stay hospitalized for a long time. he is, of course the father of former president george w. bush and another son jeb is currently running for president. anne-marie? >> wendy gillette here in new york. thank you, wendy. well president obama says

he welcomes a robust debate on the just agreed to nuclear deal with iran. it's clear the debate will not only be robust. it will also be contentious. criticism has been swift from some of america's long-time allies and on capitol hill. the administration is working hard to sell the accord. hena daniels is in washington. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the president is urging lawmakers on capitol hill to read this agreement first, defending the deal aggressively, arguing the only other alternative to diplomatic negotiations is war. vice president joe biden heads to capitol hill today to meet with democrats on the senate foreign relations committee as he continues to lobby for support for the iran nuclear deal. president obama is asking lawmakers on both sides to read the 100-page document first and then judge the deal on its merits. >> my hope is that everyone in congress also evaluates this

agreement based on the facts. not on politics not on posturing. >> ahead of a two-month review of the deal, many republicans are already threatening to vote against lifting sanctions against iran. >> nothing is more important to the world than for two-thirds of this congress to repudiation this dangerous falling. >> president obama also faces fierce opposition from israel whose leaders argue that iran won't hold up its end of the bargain. >> when you look at the inspection provisions in this deal, it's not inspections anywhere any time but even if it doesn't cheat, within ten years, they're free to build as many centrifuges as they want. >> the president is sending defense secretary ash carter toish real for talks next week where he will work to sell the deal to international allies. and the pro-israel lobby group aipac is urging them to reject

the deal so a stronger deal can be negotiated. anne-marie? >> hena daniels in washington, thank you, hena. dry conditions aid in helping rescuers search for victims. three died and four others are unaccounted for. rescue teams are going door to door. the floodwaters wiped out a mobile home park and destroyed more than 150 homes. >> and the suspect in the charleston church shooting is expected in court today. dylann roof is charged with killing nine people at the historically black church last month. today's hearing will on weather documents in the case should be released to the media. this would be roof's first actual appearance in court. during his bond hearing, he appeared by video from jail. and now to the presidential campaign and some news on political fund-raising. in total some $400 million has been raised by all of the candidates for election.

some candidates rely on small donations. others on super pacs and others on outside organizations. just 3% of the money jeb bush raised came from people who gave $200 or less. 17% of hillary clinton's campaign cash came from small donations. raising money is not a big -- as big of an issue, rather for republican presidential candidate donald trump. he's got plenty of his own money. he has set forth documents that his perj fortune is worth billions of dollar. trump met with one of his rivals yesterday, senator ted cruz. cruz who said he's a big fan of trump requested the meeting. cruz said he respects trump for focusing on immigration. >> one of the things i really admire and respect about donald trump is he stands up and focuses on the problem of el legal immigration and he speaks

the truth. we need a lot more of that. >> trump has been heavily criticized for calling immigrants arriving illegally from mexico criminals and rapists. yesterday president obama rejected the idea of revoking bill cosby's presidential medal of freedom because of the charges of sexual misconduct against the comedian. he said there's no measure for revoking the presidential medal. then he spoke to the larger issue of drugs, consent, and rape. >> if you give a woman or a man for that matter without his or her knowledge a drug and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. >> the president said any civilized country should have no tolerance for rape. caitlyn jenner was back in a familiar place in front of a cheering crowd.

the former olympic gold medalist made her first public comments since transitioning from a man to a woman when she received the arthur ashe courage award at the espys in los angeles. >> ladies an gentlemen, the courageous the stunning caitlyn jenner. >> a standing ovation as women's world cup champion abby wambach brought jenner on stage to accept the award. in a ten-minute speech jenner said she had never met a transgender person until recently and the transition has left her a responsibility in building acceptance for the transgender community. >> to keep learning to do whatever i can to reshape the landscape of how trans issues are viewed how trancepeople are treated, and then more broadly to promote a very simple idea

a brushfire forced an evacuation of 20 homes east of tacoma, washington, wednesday. homes were burned. firefighters were able to put the fires out and protect the other homes. one firefighter had a minor jury but no one else was hurt. and police are looking for a missing cobra that may have bitten an 18-year-old boy who died. nonvenomous snakes and tarantulas were also found. in the car j and a major break in a maryland cold case of two missing girls. a convicted sex offender has been indicted on charges of

first-degree murder. kenneth craig report. >> reporter: sheila and katherine lyon were ten years old when they vanished outside a shopping mall in 1975. it's about half a mile away from their home. the high-profile case had police stumped for 40 years until now. >> my commonwealth attorney randy krantz obtained indictments charged lloyd lee michael welch jr. with first-degree felony murder for his involvement in the deaths of of sheila and katherine lyon. >> reporter: at the time of the lyon sisters' disappearance, welsh was a carnival worker living in the wheaton area. police says he was at the mall when the girls appear and last seen watching them. >> during that abduction and as a consequence of that abduction, lloyd welch committed the

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," unrest in greece as a bailout plan clears parliament, and it was hit or miss for amazon's prime day. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. early this morning parliament approved the sweeping measures demanded. the bill was approved. it imposes significant tax hikes, spending cuts, and tension adjustments.

prior to the vote a demonstration against it turned violent in athens. protesters hurled gasoline bombs. police responded with tear gas. federal reserve chair janet yellen said the fed will likely raise the interest rates later this year. she's encouraged by signs the economy is improving but she said interest rates will remain at a very low level for quite some time after that first increase. yellen testifies again today. following a four-day rally, a slump in energy stocks sent the markets here on wall street a bit lower. the dow lost 3 points, the s&p was down 1 point, and nasdaq fell nearly 6 points. uber is appealing a ruling by a california judge who fined them. the judge ruled uber refused to give california regulators information about its business practices. uber calls the decision disappointing.

and depending on whom you asked, amazon's much hyped big sale prime day was either a boom or a bust. amazon promised yesterday's 24-hour super sales event would offer bigger discounts than the holiday season. by 1:00 p.m. the speed at which customer customers orders surpassed black friday but some were disappointed. some thought the discounts weren't deep enough or they didn't like the types of products being marked down. anne-marie? >> i was one of those people. at 3:00 a.m. i had the mouse in my hand and i realized i don't need a 50% on a knee brace because i don't need a knee brace or shampoo by mail. but if you need a knee brace, a great deal out there. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thanks a lot, jill. when we return, this year's class of kennedy center honorees, and new high-resolution photos of pluto lead to amazing discoveries

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. 4 we're seeing more amazing images from space today. nasa is releasing new results from the fly-by of pluto. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: nasa is receiving the first ever close-ups from pluto 3 billion miles away. >> this is what we came for. >> this exceeds what we came for. >> reporter: the images are being sent back from the new horizon's spacecraft including one from charon, one of the largest moons.

hack computers and steal credit card information. dozens were arrested in the u.s. and other countries. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: working from inside cyber command center in pittsburgh investigators crushed what they say was an exclusive online group of hackers. u.s. attorney david hickton. >> through this operation we have dismantled a cyber hornet's nest of criminal hackers which was believed by many to be impenetrable including to be believed impenetrable by the hackers themselves. >> reporter: "operation shrouded horizon." they said they had to be invited by another member and had to prove their skills. once admitted 250 members traded, bought, and sold everything from credit card to social security numbers to millions of stolen log-ins and passwords. also popular were hacking

programs used to spy on cell phone users. according to prosecutors, one program was designed by 20-year-old morgan culbertson of pittsburgh. he called himself android and designed dendroid which he sold for about $300. dendroid would infect google apps and allow people to hack into and intercept calls and steal files. google said the attack was small and stopped last year. another hacker 39-year-old eric crocker from new york called himself fast man. he's charged with using a program that infected facebook users' computers to send out massive amounts of spam. the dark code site has been shut down. its welcome screen says it has been seized by the fbi and some 20 police agencies from around the world.
