5. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, july 17th, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning it's still unclear why a gunman opened fire at two military sites in chattanooga, tennessee. four marines are dead and two servicemembers and a police officer were woupted in yesterday's attack. the gunman identified as kuwait-born mohammod youssuf abdulazeez was killed. fbi says he acted alone. so far he's not been linked to any terror organization but they believe it was an act of terror. officials say he had numerous weapons. kenneth craig has more from chattanooga. >> reporter: and this is where the tragedy began here at the strip mall the site of the recruitment center with the first shooting yesterday morning. you can see this morning it's the center of a agreeing memorial and a huge outpouring of support from this community. witnesses say a lone gunman in a

silver mustang convertible drove up to this chattanooga armed forces recruiting office and opened fire. a navy sailor was injured. the shooter reappeared minutes later at training facility seven miles away where he rammed his car through a gate and killed four marines and injured two others. the gunman identified as 24-year-old mohammod youssef abdulazeez died in a shoot-out with the police. >> they arrived on the scene very quickly and they actively % and enthusiastically engaged in this brazen criminal. >> reporter: authorities swarmed his house within minutes. he was born in kuwait but lived here in the chattanooga area. so far they do not know why he targeted the military with this assault. >> we'll look at his friends, families associates anybody who's associated with him to determine a cause or reason why he conducted this attack. >> reporter: people visiting a

makeshift memorial tried to make sense of the tragedy. >> why would you hurt your own protectors. >> reporter: officials say abdulazeez was not on any u.s. terror list and the fbi was not aware of any terrorist leanings. and a law enforcement source told cbs news this individual was on a watch list a few years ago but was taken off following an investigation. kenneth craig, cbs news chattanooga, tennessee. overnight we learned more about abdulazeez. an organization that tracks extremist groups says he blogged on monday saying life is short and bitter and muslims should not miss an opportunity to submit to allah. he earned an electrical engineering degree and applied

for work at a utilities company. he was arrested on a dui charge in april. following the attack in tennessee police beefed up security here in new york city. additional police officers were posted at recruitment centers and other locations, but police say they have no specific information about a plot against the city. and this is the latest attack against military targets in this country. in 2009 one person was killed at a recruiting center in arkansas. that same year, 13 died when an army officer opened fire at ft. hood. in 2013 12 people were killed in an attack at a washington navy yard and 16 were killed in an attack at ft. hood in 2014. we'll have the very latest developments on the chattanooga shooting coming up this morning. >> recovery efforts are under way in western illinois after a tornado caused extensive damage but no serious injuries. the tornado hit just before dusk yesterday, part of a line of storms that swept through the area.

the return town of cameron two hours west of chicago was hardest hit. homes, trees, and power lines were damaged. thousands were without power. and several gas leaks are reported. all gas and electric has been shut off and the town is closed to all traffic. and now that a jury has convicted colorado theater gunman james holmes of murder, it will have to decide whether he faces the death penalty or life in prison for killing 12 people. the penalty phase of the trial begins wednesday. don champion reports. >> we the jury find the defendant james egan holmes guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: james holmes showed no emotion as a colorado judge read the jury's verdict. it took about an hour for the guilty decisions on all 165 charges against him to be red ad aloud. >> we're very happy this animal, this monster will never see the light of day. >> reporter: for the family members of the victims, the

verdict does nothing to heal the pain. tom teves' steves' son was killed in the shooting. >> this isn't over for any of those people. everyone else is going to walk away and it's over. it's another day at the job. but it's not for these families. >> reporter: the shooting happened july 20th 2012, during the premiere of the batman move "the dark knight rises." >> reporter: the prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. >> life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death sentence. knows are the only two options. >> it could take a month to complete. don champion cbs news, colorado. former president george h.w. bush is facing months of recovery. the 91-year-old is still in the hospital in maine after fracturing a bone in his neck after a fall in his summer home. doctors say the injury will take three to four months to heal. bush will have to wear a brace

to immobilize his neck. and the death of a black woman in a texas county jail is touching off a storm of criticism on social media. sandra bland was found dead in her cell monday. police say she hanged herself but her family said it is extremely unlikely that she would commit suicide. sandra bland's arrest appears to have been captured on camera the video uploaded to youtube. the 28-year-old was arrested friday following a traffic stop in waller county, texas. police say she was uncooperative when she was pulled over for failing to signal. she was arrested for allegedly kicking one of the troopers. three days later she was dead. the texas rangers and fbi are investigating, and a prosecutor plans to present evidence to a grand jury.

was being held was cited 2012 for improperly monitoring prisoners. today president obama will meet with the saudi foreign minister at the white house. it is the president's first meeting with a key ally since the nuclear deal with iran. the saudi government made up of saudi muslims has had tense at times and hostile relationship with the shiite government. yesterday president obama was the first president to visit a federal prison in oklahoma. it's in a case to overhaul the prison system. he reflected on his mistakes. he smoked marijuana and cocaine and noted the fine line from becoming president and being behind bars. >> there but for the grace of god, and that is i think, something we all have to think about. >> mr. obama talked about the second chances and resources

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. a jetliner in washington . state lands safely after it's struck by a laser. alaskan airlines reports flight 66 from juneau was lit up by a laser as it was heading for a landing at seattle-tacoma airport last night. the plane carried 70 passengers and five crew members. on wednesday night there were almost a dozen planes in newark liberty airport in new jersey. this morning australia remembers the victims of the malaysian airliner shot down over eastern ukraine one year ago today. 38 australian citizens and permanent residents were among the 298 people on board. relatives and politicians gathered for a memorial service and the unveiling of a plaque set in soil from the crash site.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs this morning" "moneywatch," a new accident for one of google's self-driving cars. and amazon and walmart tally up their online showdown. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. google says that it's the first time one of its self-driving cars was in an accident that was involved in an injury. google said one of its self-driving suvs was rear-ended in southern california. there were three google employees onboard who complained of minor whiplash but returned to work. the driver in the other car

complained of back and neck pain. this is the 14th accident in six year of google's self-driving program. the dow gained 70 points. the s&p finished 16 points higher. the nasdaq gained 64 points. now that a tentative deal has been reached to bail out greece, greek banks will reopen on monday, but customers can't withdraw money except at atms. they can deposit cash and transfer funds. they're still limited to taking out 60 euros a day, but greek authorities are working on a plan to allow a rollover so if they don't take out one day, they cn take on 120 euros the next. amazon's super sale prime day may have gotten slammed on the internet, but it was a hit at the cash register. amazon says shoppers ordered 398 items per second. that's faster than the rate on black friday the busiest day of shopping. amazon's worldwide order growth was four times what it was last year. amazon said it's making prime day an annual event. walmart's christmas in july

it was a scene reminiscent of the oscar-winning movie "gravity." astronauts on the international space station took shelter for almost an hour in the soyuz capsule. they hunkered down as a piece of space junk threatened to hit the station. luckily it passed without any harm. some military veterans say they're deeply concerned as they watch isisbrutally grab territory in iraq and syria. so they will return to battle. chip reid spent time with one. >> reporter: in this tiny west virginia town nestled deep in the mountains, 35-year-old army veteran charlie kayton is preparing for war. he's about to return to iraq to fight against isis.
