hollywood when an overflow crowd shows up for a free concert from the rapper future. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, july 24th, 2015. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. in the words of one witness, how does this kind of thing keep happening. al man wielding a handgun entered a movie theater and started shooting. when it was all over three people were dead including gunman and nine others injured. it happened in lave yacht, louisiana, 35 miles west of new orleans. the violence started 20 minutes into the screening of the comedy "train wreck." police say a 58-year-old white male was sitting in a row.

he shot two people directly in front of him. collin was sitting in the same row as the shooter just a few feet away. >> he was standing up just shooting at the whole crowd for who knows what. so i -- we were in the same row -- jumped from the top of the railing down because i did not want to walk in his packet down the stairs to get out, so i throughout my best option was to jump. they're trying to figure out what caused the gunman to go on this deadly rampage. omar villafranca has more from lafayette. >> reporter: a state police bomb squad was called to the scene of the nadir after they hit on a backpack and other suspected items in the gunman's car. the police evacuated the area and warned people nearby they would hear explosions. >> out of an abundance of precaution we wanted to make sure there were no devices. we did blow up a package, a suspicious package. no explosive devices were found. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say the shoot irwas a

58-year-old white male who acted alone thursday night when he opened fire on moviegoers at random before turning the gun on himself. >> we saw a lady with blood all over her leg. i just grabbed my child. i mean we all ran. >> how does this kind of thing keep happening. >> reporter: louisiana governor bobby jindal visited two at a local hospital. among the injured, two wounded teachers. >> despite being injured the school teacher was able to pull a fire alarm. >> reporter: officials say about 100 people were there to see the amy schumer comedy "train wreck." following the incident schumer wrote, quote, my heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers with everyone in louisiana. omar villafranca, cbs news, lafayette. >> we'll have the latest on the lafayette theater shooting coming up later on "cbs this morning." the lafayette shooting comes three years after james holmes opened fire in a suburban denver theater killing 12. yesterday colorado jurors

decided holmes' attacks were cruel enough to justify the death penalty. last week holmes was convicted on 165 counts of murder attempted murder and other charges. the sentencing phase of his trial could last up to a month. two federal inspectors general are reportedly asking the justice department to open a criminal investigation of hillary clinton. at issue is whether clinton handled sensitive information on her private e-mail account when she was secretary of state. "the new york times" reports the inspectors general for the state department and intelligence agency agencies say her account contained hundreds of classified e-mails. she has said there were none. the justice department has not decided if it will open an investigation. donald trump visited laredo,

texas. he was there to talk about immigration, a subject that's key to his campaign saying mexico is sending its criminals across the border. don champion reports from laredo. >> reporter: donald trump entered thursday to talk about immigration and border control. he did not walk back his controversial comments. instead he tried to clarify them. >> there's a huge problem with the illegals coming through, and in this section it's a problem. in some sections, it's a massive problem. >> reporter: trump blames the media. >> they take a half a sentence and a quarter of a sentence and they put it all together. >> reporter: trump says if elected, he would build a wall to stop the flow of immigrants. laredo city officials rejected that idea. >> reporter: a poll is showing he's leading in supporters. >> we don't think that's necessary at this time. >> reporter: trump claim as poll in nevada shows he's being supported. he already has his sights set on a head-to-head battle with hillary clinton. >> she's going to be beaten and i'm the one to beat her.

>> reporter: first he'll have to win over his own party. don champion, cbs news, laredo, texas. ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll speak with presidential candidate senator marco rubio. president obama becomes the first sitting president to visit kenya later today. the president left joint base andrews last night. he'll attend a business summit and meet with kenyan leaders. mr. obama says he disagrees with them on gay rights. gay sex in kenya is punishable by up to 14 years in prison. some activists told him to keep such views to himself. california fire crews are battling several wildfires. the fire in napa valley grew to 10.5 square miles but an evacuation order has been canceled. another fire has forced officials to shut down a major highway between sacramento and reno. a bridge that was destroyed during a flash flooding will

reopen today. interstate 10 is the link between los angeles and arizona. the bridge collapsed some days ago leaving some drivers stranded. autopsy reports on sandra bland show she killed herself. blamd was arrested after a traffic stop escalated into an argument. she was found dead. >> the cause of death was a hanging. the evidence was a suicide. what we have found supports those findings. the autopsy also revealed bland had marijuana in her system. bland's family ordered an independent autopsy. this morning turkish warplanes hit isis targets in syria. three jets took off from an air base in southeast turkey and hit three isis targets across the border including two suspected command centers. on thursday turkey allowed the u.s. to use their airspace to launch attacks on the terrorist group. alzheimer's today turk eric

police raided militants in 13 provinces all across turkey. republican critics of the deal to curtain iran's program got into it with secretary john kerry. senator bob corker told kerry they had been fleeced. >> to those who are thinking about opposing the deal because of what might happen in the year '15, '16, '20, remember, if we walk away, your '15 or '16 or '20 starts tomorrow. >> congress has 60 days to review the agreement. the deal will take effect unless congress blocks it. but opponents will have to get enough votes to override the veto. the body of a marine was returned home to tennessee. staff sergeant david wyatt was one of five marines killed.

the man in the red shirt argued with other passengers and they punched and kicked him to the floor. they tied him up to restrain him for the rest of the flight. the man was allegedly drunk. after the plane landed, he was arrested. and on "cbs moneywatch" amazon delights wall street. and the classic chuck taylor sneaker gets an update. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, alison. online retailer amazon posted a surprise profit that sent stock shares 17% higher. amazon reported second quarter income of $92 million on the strength of its cloud computing business and strong revenue. amazon stock jumped nearly $84 a share. it climbed 55% since the beginning of the year. despite the uptick at amazon the major upticks on wall street closed down for a third day in a row. the dow lost 119 points, the s&p finished down 12 points and the nasdaq finished 25 points lower.

>> mcdonald's continues to struggle. the fast food chain reported a quarter drop in sales. mcdonald's ceo steve easterbrook called the results disappointing. the previous ceo was fired in january and easterbrook spoke of a turnaround plan in may including new cooking methods and a new menu. the food industry says up to 85% of food contains gmos. the fed has said gmos are safe. label advocates say consumers have a right to know what's in their food. the white house has not said if it will endorse the measure. angelina jolie will direct a war drama for the online streaming service netflix. jolie co-adapted the script about the regime in cambodia seen through the eyes of a young girl. it's expected to be available next year. and, alison if you're of a certain age, the sneakers you

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. cell phone video captured a desperate rescue last saturday of a 2-year-old girl locked alone in a sweltering car in kansas. now, a sister and brother are facing charges of child endangerment for leaving their niece in a vehicle. outside the courthouse thursday % the grandmother said it was not intentional. the court set $25,000 bail on each. they're due back in court on july 30th. there was chaos on sunset

boulevard as fans gathered for a free concert of rapper future. the show had moved there after too many people showed up at the original venue, the roxy. riot police were called in and parts of sunset boulevard were shut down. future's concert was canceled. a shark scare on long island. there were about 2,000 people in the town of oyster bay thursday when lifeguards saw two sharks. they ordered everyone out of the water. a police helicopter spotted six sharks with one nearby. they appeared to be following a school of fish. >> the sharks were 10 to 15 feet off the shore. they feel that there's a lot of bait in the water. they're looking to eat. >> reporter: the all-clear was given after about two hours. there were no injuries. people on a florida beach rescued a hammerhead shark. he was caught in a fishing hook line. they pulled the shark to the shore and cut away the line and the hook.

nasa has announced a major find of an earth-like planet orbiting the star like a sun. nasa found it with their telescope. nasa says it's slightly larger than earth but it's about the same distance from its sun as we are from ours. >> this is the closest sun/earth twin we've discovered in the history of humanity. >> the new planet is being called kepler-254b. it's so far confirmed a thousand planets. along the mississippi there's a huge buzz over the invasion of insects.
