2015. this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, july 31st, 2015. good morning, and thanks for joining us. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. the chunk of the airplane wing thought be from flight 370 is headed to france this morning. experts there will determine if the debris that washed up from the indian ocean is the missing piece of the boeing 777. there was also a suitcase disloving. hena daniels has more. >> good morning, alison. this discovery that washed up off the beach gives hope to family members. the analysis marks the beginning of a full examination to see if it's the part that came from ma labor shah flight 370. the six-foot-long flaperon that washed up. experts will there be taking a closer look at barnacles

covering it. they'll be looking at other markings on the debris. >> they'll be looking at the deformation of any of the metal, they'll look to see if it was torn, char marks on it to indicate fire. >> so far investigators are confident the piece did come from a 777 boeing jet. malaysian flight 370 is the only plane missing in the world right now. they're less certain, however, that a shredded suitcase found near the debris has anything to do with the flight. >> the bag doesn't seem to show that the bag has been in the water for a long period of time, nonetheless, it will be taken seriously. >> sara bajc's partner was one of the 132 people onboard the flight when it vanished last march. >> when you've been keeping your hopes and spirits up for a year and a half, that's a habit that's going to be difficult to break. >> if the part is determined to be from flight 370, the part will be the first real clue of

what may have happened to the plane. and this morning more is washing ashore including a chinese water bottle and an indonesian cleaning bottle but it's too early to tell if it's related to the flight. exploding wildfires have forced hundreds of people from their homes in california. 7,000 firefighters are battling 14 large blazes in the state, mostly in northern california. crews are dealing with high heat and heavy winds. the fast spreading fire in lake county north of san francisco destroyed at least three homes. hundreds of people have been evacuated. the fires burned more than 13,000 acres and is only 5% contained. air tankers and helicopters are dousing the flames. dry timber and heavy brush are fueling the fire. powerful thunderstorms brought heavy rain and hail to parts of southern california. the fierce downpours flooded streets and filled them with mud. more than an inch of rain struck in an hour. strong winds brought down trees. the storms are expected through

the weekend. the former university of cincinnati police officer who shot and killed a driver is free on bail this morning. ray tensing pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter charges and as marlie hall reports new body camera videos has two fellow officers in trouble as well. >> reporter: former university of cincinnati police officer ray tensing is free on bond after entering a not guilty plea thursday morning. members of the victim's family were in court. >> this is a courtroom. you will conduct yourself at all times. >> reporter: the 25-year-old is charged with murder for shooting samuel dubose in the head during a traffic stop. tensing pulled dubose over on july 19th for a missing front license plate. dubose couldn't produce his

driver's license. tensing asked him to get out of the car, but dubose resisted. one shot was fired and the car rolled away. the prosecutor said tensing was not in any danger. >> i think he was making an excuse for a purposeful killing of another person. >> another body cam shows tensing down on the street and a third officer said he saw him being dragged. those two officers are now on administrative leave. tensing faces life in prison if convicted. marlie hall, cbs news, louisiana. louisiana authorities have released the 911 calls after the theater killing. >> 911. what's your emergency. >> we're in the movies and someone started shooting people. >> 19 other emergency calls would follow in the chaotic minutes after john houser opened fire. he killed two people and wounded nine others before killing

himself. video at the lafayette theater shows houser buying a ticket and then it shows him walking down a hallway hall hall and buying a ticket before pausing and walking into the theater. bizarre turn to the colorado shooting trial. >> no, no, don't kill him, don't kill him. >> then deborah climbed over seats toward james holmes. the judge season sentenced her to three weeks in the county jail for contempt of court. jurors are deciding between life and prison without parole or the death penalty for holmes. tensions are running high between israelis and palestinians this morning. israelis say jewish extremists are suspected in a deadly west bank house fire. a palestinian baby burned to d death in the alleged arson. at least three other relatives are critically wounded. israelis say the family was sleeping during the overnight attack.

hebrew graffiti found at the scene says it's revenge. israeli authorities call it terror. please or terror. a photograph . police say this man had just been released from prison. a photograph captures a suspect reaching into his coat. then he's seen plunging a knife into the back of a woman seen in the green shirt. he had been arrested for a similar attack back in 2005. an anti-abortion group has released a fourth video. it shoes doctors of planned parenthood discussing how to distribute the body parts of fetuses for research. lawmakers are fighting to take away funding for the organization. nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: the latest sting video is also the most graphic. it shows a planned parenthood doctor in colorado looking at a fetus and discussing organs. >> i think a per-item works a little better to see how much we

can get out of it. >> reporter: it galvanized republicans. >> these videos are hard for anyone to defend and hit at the moral fabric of our society. >> reporter: planned parenthood gets more than 500 million federal and stage dollars each year and launched a new ad campaign this week aimed at keeping that funding. they're looking to keep that funding. in a "washington post" op-ed the group's president insisted it does not show anything illegal on planned parenthood's part. but house committees are now investigating, what's become a potent campaign issue for candidates. >> defend planned parenthood. >> reporter: democrat hillary clinton weighed in after a meeting in maryland. >> it's another effort by the republicans to, you know, try to limit the health care options for women, and we should, you know, not let them succeed once again. >> but she also called the

spirit airlines is trying to determine what caused a problem on one of its jets after landing in dallas. flight 407 had a small fire on landing gear tire shortly after arriving. 178 passengers were aboard the flight from orlando. one passenger captured a view of the flames from inside the cabin. everyone's reported to be okay. there's confusion this morning about that allegiant airlines flight that made an emergency landing at a closed airport in fargo last week. the pilot told the control tower the plane was nearly out of fuel. >> hey, listen. we're at bingo fuel here in probably three to four minutes and i've about got to come in to land. >> the cbs news has learned that the plane carrying 144 passengers and six crew was not critically low on fuel. allegiant said they had approximately 42 minutes left of fuel remaining. adding to confusion, they found that the pilot operated the plane in a safe manner.

the faa says it's still investigating. u.s. fish & wildlife service agents are asking dr. walter palmer to contact them immediately. there was a public outcry after he killed a lion in zimbabwe. a white house petition shows that he received 146,000 signatures. that means there'll be an answer from the administration. >> this particular peation has reached that threshold, and so there will be a forthcoming white house response. >> but any legal action like extradition would have to be made by the justice department. the controversial killing of cecil the lion came up on the presidential campaign trial. republican front-runner donald trump was asked about gaming after actress mia pharaohfairpharoahfair farrow asking him about a picture.

on the "cbs moneywatch" whole foods takes a stock hit. and you will not believe what happened to an iphone that fell from a plane during a flight. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, alison. greeks are scheduled to talk more. greek officials are to meet with negotiators. they'll try to work out details of a third international bailout worth $93 million. greece needs the money to stay in the euro currency. here on wall street today investors will be watching more earnings reports including exxon and chevron. the dow lost about 5 points thursday, the s&p was up a fraction and the nasdaq fell 4 points. shares of whole food stocks fell sharply thursday. the company's growth slowed after new york city officials found it was overcharging customers. investigators found the high end chain mislabeled the weights of its prepackaged food.

whole foods' stock value has dropped 29% so far this year. soulcycle is going public. it's hoping to raise $100 million. the company says it will use the money to expand from 38 to 250 studios across the country and also explore moving soulcycle into the home exercise market. facebook plans to start testing a new flying drone. hayes a wing span of 140 feet, similar to a both 737. it weighs less than a thousand pounds. it is the next step in facebook's campaign in the internet service to deliver to remote parts of the world. the researcher says he can locate, unlock and remote start vehicles by interception communications between the on lar remote mobile app and the

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports the new england patriots opened training camp with a big question mark over the most important position. quarterback tom brady took the field after suffering a setback in a fight against nfl over his suspension. a minnesota judge handed the league a victory by rejecting the players union lawsuit. patriots coach bill belichick gave a terse answer when asked about the controversy. >> i'm worried about today's practice and how our team performs. i don't have any control over all the other questions that have been asked here about the

several confederate flags were found around the martin luther king site at ebenezer. they found the flags and they will be removed. a surveillance video will show two white males in placing the flags. police ask for help in identifying the men. actress valerie harper is out of the hospital this morning. the 75-year-old actress was
