live, from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. and the good saturday evening to you, i'm brian. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. dozens of wild fires are raging across california tonight and you can see why the governor declared a state of emergency late yesterday. the biggest fire is just to the east of clear lake. the rocky fire started wednesday and is still out of control. the fire in lake county is also the largest right now in the state. it has charred more than 22,000 acres and there's no sign of it slowing down. it is only 5% contained. the flames have forced hundreds of people to evacwait their homes. thousands of others are on

notice that they may have to pack up and leave. andrea is near the fire line. firefighters are facing a lot of challenges as they try to get a handle on the flames. andrea. >> well, juliette, brian, the situation is very intense out here. the majority of the burning that is happening on the highway 20 side of the fire right now and firefighters say it may be until august 10 before they finally have the thing fully under control. the flames of the rocky fire refuse to slow their marks. through the mountains of lake county. >> happening now is this portion of the fire. >> cal fire spokesperson says their firefighters are up against unprecedented fuel conditions. >> we have areas that have never burned aid cording to our records. >> combined with four years of drought, they are sent roaring off in a different direction. >> like i said, it hasn't burned. it is super dry, critically low

fuel moisture levels. so, even if the weather is helping us today, the fuel is still so dry. >> thank you. >> absolutely, yeah. >> do you plan to defend at the barn and at the house. >> for people living here, the days and nights have been filled with pacing and long glances at neighboring hillsides. making signs of gratitude and encouragement for firefighters working 24 hour shifts. the fire has already destroyed 16 homes. >> last night was getting scary. i think the smoke was the closest to our house that it had been. i was really gathering all of our important stuff and putting it in the car. extra crews were brought in to help. these trucks are carrying firefighters all the way from nevada. >> we are spread thin. >> as the flames move out, pacific gas and electric crews have been moving in. to begin the work of replacing

the infrastructure, mother nature took out. now those blackened hillsides you see behind me, that's what it looks like for 22,000 acres out here. as we said, this fire destroyed 16 homes. coming up on kpix5 news at 6:30. hear from one woman who has lost everything. live in lake county, andrea, kpix5. >> thank you. firefighters have nearly stopped the spread of the rag fire near the lake. it is 92% contained tonight. they expect to have it fully surrounded by monday. only one home was damaged, but two shed like buildings were destroyed. there are no evacuation orders in place and all roads in the area are open. >> a firefighter has died in one of the fires in northern california. 38-year-old, david rule, was battling a fire in the forest. and will that is about 100 miles in the oregon border. he was a captain from second south dakota and helping with the fire since june.

he was on his own looking for the best way for his crew to attack the flames when the wind suddenly shifted and he was overtaken by the fire. he had a wife and two children. >> startedded with gunfire, ended with a crash. police are investigating an intense pursuit. started last night near the convention center. he took off running and when they chased after him, he pulled out a gun and started shooting. officer fired back. nobody ended up getting hit. the suspect then hijacked a car and took off. eventually he crashed and was taken into custody. >> the bay area is facing another traffic challenge this weekend. how did bay area roads fair because of the closure of the transbay tube? kpix joins us live from the terminal in san francisco and christian, how is it looking right now? >> so far, so good. i mean, the temporary terminal has been very busy today, serving as the dropoff point for people coming over into san francisco from oakland by bus. which is one of three ways to

make it across the bay this weekend. construction crews are pounding away to make repairs to the tube, which runs underneath the san francisco bay. bart expects the work to be done by the end of tomorrow. so the monday commuters should be just fine. however, this weekend, no bart shuttles back and forth across the bay, but bart has provided free bus service for the weekend and riders gave it a thumb's up all the way across the board. >> yeah, actually caught me by surprise. i thought it was going to take a long time. it was 20 minutes. it was quick. >> all weekend, bart is running 94 buses every 45 seconds. the buses leave from oakland 19th street station and drop off at the temporary transbay terminal over here, which is a two block walk from the bart station. of course, if you don't decide to drive over the bay bridge yourself, there will be extra ferries running across the

weekend, over the weekend as well. and there's a lot of concern over potentially horrendous traffic because of this transbay tube closure. from what we've seen, the bay bridge traffic has been horrible, as usual, but from what we've seen on the city streets here in san francisco, it's been light. really not typical for this time of the day. seems like a lot of people are staying off the roads so far. live in san francisco, kpix5. >> people avoid the hassle of the bart closure and stay home, this is a live look at the approach of the toll plaza. the approach to the bay bridge isn't that bad, but it is pretty slow going from san francisco getting on to the bridge. there is a backup southbound over the golden gate bridge and a big backup heading out of the city toward marin. the parkway northbound almost at a standstill. the other alternates, the rich richmond and san mateo bridges. the ferry, ridership is higher than usual this weekend because of the bart closure.

up to 25% on the oakland alameda line and the 5% more on the route between vallejo and san francisco. the muni is undergoing enhancements that will affect service. the muni market subway and the twin peeks tunnel was shut down at 9:30 at night. crews are installing a new communication system, muni will provide bus shuttles until 1:30 a.m. that will run the length of the subway. >> head to our website, cbssf.com for transportation alternatives. we could be seeing something at the gas pump. we haven't seen in years. cheap gas. very cheap. how low it may go. >> and we're getting closer to getting some answers about a plane part that washed ashore in the indian ocean. the chances it could be from that missing

gas prices are expected to start dropping to levels we haven't seen since the great recession. refineries are working at full capacity. plus they are about to start switching to a winter blend. tends to be a cheap mix.

analysts say the price could fall to an average of $2.50 a gallon or lower in california by the end of the year. nationwide, the average could drop below $2 a gallon. >> a wing flap that could belong to that missing malaysia airlines flight arrived at a french military base today. tests will be conducted next week to figure out where it came from. jonathan on the chances the park part could be from flight 370. >> the fractured piece of wing arrived at a french military facility under police security. on wednesday, experts will analyze the wreckage for signs of where it came from and what caused it to break off. >> it was a boeing 777, as i understand it, the only 777 unaccounted for, so it would seem much likely this is part of the plane. >> malaysian officials sent crews to reunion island. they will join a growing search effort launched by locals to find other debris. >> you think the piece belongs

to the plane? >> i don't know. >> the wing flap was found here on the east coast of the island. an area known for its rough surf and for all the garbage the current brings in. i spoke with one man who found these items here on the beach. what looks like a plastic magazine rack and a singed and shredded flotation device. >> it's unclear if the ocean is delivering clues or just trash. the beach remains open to the public for the time being. a memorial was held saturday afternoon on the island at a church a few blocks away from where the wreckage was discovered. 239 candles lit for each passenger who disappeared 17 months ago. jonathan, cbs news, reunion island. >> officials say even if the wing flap is from the airliner, there's no guarantee investigators will find the black box. >> if you drive a dodge charger, you might have to drive it right back to the

dealer. fiat chrysler is recalling more than 322,000 chargers. the problem s the side air bags can inflate if the doors are slammed too hard. the recall covers models from 2011 through 2014. owners will be notified to bring their cars in for repair. the company says it knows of three minor injuries because of the problem. the funeral was held today for bobbi kristina brown and word is, it was very tense. the service was held near a church at atlanta. the 22-year-old daughter of whitney houston and bobby brown died last week. she was found face down six months ago. an initial autopsy found no obvious cause of death or significant injury. a long standing risk between the houston and brown family boiled over the service. the sister of bobby brown, angry that houston's former manager spoke at the funeral. >> and still to come, banking on pot, why state regulators want banks to start doing business with marijuana

cannabis and financial industries. at issue, banking. in california, even though medical marijuana is legal, it's still a crime under federal law. so banks and credit unions won't do business with the cannabis business. >> california is very difficult to get a bank account for anyone in the cannabis industry. so the entire industry is a cash basis industry. >> that's where state, fiona comes in. >> this industry has been living in the shadows for decades. >> proposing that legal marijuana businesses have the same access to banks as any other businesses. currently, she says dispensaries are forced to bring in bags of cash to the state board of equalization. the only agency that accepts them. >> we are a tax agency. we collect and audit. we are not a bank. but that's what they have to do. they have to come over to our office, drop off their cash to pay their taxes and we walk across the street and deposit

their money. >> not only is is the cash only system dangerous, it's also hurting our state. losing out on millions of dollars in sales tax. so the question is, will banks do business with california's marijuana businesses? for now, it remains a game of wait and see. >> marijuana legalization goes before voters in 2016. but in colorado and washington, where recreational marijuana is legal, at the state capital, kpix5. >> and check this out, a summer storm in phoenix makes for quite a sight. a dark cloud that appears to touch the ground. this is what is called a land sprout. a swirling wind similar to a tornado. winds were strong enough to flip over some trailer homes. police say one driver had to be rescued from a flash flood. there are no reports of major damage or injuries. fortunately. you wonder why we call it a web cam.

>> charlotte's web. >> woody allen once said that nature is just one big restaurant and we're watching this drama play out in real time on the approach to the bay bridge right now. well, it is dinner time and he certainly enjoying it. over this festive sight, ladies and gentlemen, spider versus the fly. we have the numbers around the bayarea right now. still on the mild side for the most part. temperatures today cooled a little bit. but we're expecting them to come down just slightly over the next few days. right now, the numbers 85 degrees at concord. oakland 73. livermore, 86. and san jose 79 degrees. and here's how it looks over the west coast. better not be any spiders out in the satellite. cooler air moving in. means the sea breeze kicks in as well. and mild temperatures all week as a result. on the future cast, we're seeing low clouds spilling over the shoreline tonight. we'll freeze at 7:00 tomorrow morning, so you can see that

we'll start out tomorrow much like today. low cloudiness along the coast and extending a few miles inland. as the day goes on, things clear out and mostly sunny skies as the day progresses. sunday afternoon. so to sum it up, gentle cooling trend continues. inland highs are near the low 80 expz drizzle along the coast as well. still a nice day tomorrow. again, for the nhra, 78 degrees. or perhaps if the county fair is a little more to your liking, also by santa rosa, 80 degrees will do it. and the stern grove festival in san francisco, partly cloudy skies tomorrow. forecast, 67 in the city, and 80 degrees. 86 for morgan hill. over in the east bay, the numbers will be near 80 degrees. a few high clouds from time to time, but no big deal. up in the north bay, looks nice. 77 degrees tomorrow, we'll be looking for 72 degrees and then up at lake port and clear lake,

all in the 90s tomorrow. extended forecast calling for partly cloudy skies, some high clouds from time to time, but then monday through friday. in fact, all the way into next weekend, plenty of sunshine and numbers nowhere near where they were last week. livermore hit 107 degrees. we're going to be relatively cool. and speaking of mr. cool, look who is here. >> i was laughing because that's a break for the 49ers tonight. they have their first practice at levi. and sure, they lost a bunch of player, but they may have found one. why this season could mark the reemergence of vernon davis and the re

49er fans will get their first look at the 2015 team tonight. at levi stadium. and they will see a renewed vernon davis, at least according to vernon. the 49ers tight end is coming off his lowest catch titles since his rookie year. many wondered why he almost completely disappeared from the 49er offense. davis sat out last season's mini camp and offseason workouts because he wanted a new contract. but davis said it was an adviser that told him. during the year, davis realized it was really bad advice. you think? >> during the course of that season, i had a chance to really think. what am i doing? you know, i don't play this game for money. that's not why i play. it's good. it's good to have that, to be rewarded and things, but what

troy birdie, 11 holds. on his way to shooting, 10 under 61. meter is tied for the lead at 14 under. believe it or not, that was meritt's second 61 of the year. this is the way you play the british open. jay who met a temporary caddy on tuesday. the guy is a digital advertiser is his real job, but man did he call the right club. next group, chipping from off the green on 17. rolls up near the hole. birdied it at 8 under par. you know, back on wednesday night, did you guys see this? wilmer flores was seen crying on the field. he reportedly been traded to milwaukee, but stayed in the game. much to flores relief, the deal fell apart and he stayed in new york. and then last night, in the bottom of the 12th against the nationals, flores made the mets happy that they kept him by hitting a walkoff home run.
