>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> homeowners staring down disaster as the rocky fire rages out of control. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> and i'm brian hackney. the rocky fire in lake county has grown to nearly the size of san francisco. it is 27,000 acres. more than 42 square miles and it is 5% contained. 50 buildings have gone up in flames. half of them homes. thousands more are threatened. >> a triple digit temperature, very low humidity. winds that are helping push this fire through really steep and difficult access type

terrain. >> for some homeowners it is too late for help. kpix5's andria borba spoke with one woman who lost everything. >> reporter: as you drive along morgan valley road, the blackened hillside becomes overwhelming. >> there are so many people down there whose houses are just ashes. and everyone we know that lives down there, they have nothing anymore. it is crazy. >> reporter: the rocky fire has burned hopes to the ground. among them, amanda o' connor's. her home used to beyond in area in pink fire retardant. it is usually a sign of safety, but it was too late for amanda's home. >> from my porch you could see the smoke, we decided what to do and the smoke was three times as big as it was two minutes ago and we thought we had to go. >> reporter: when she and her roommate snucked beyond the fire lines to see what was

left, they were stunned. >> we wanted to see what we could salvage. there was nothing. >> reporter: amanda managed to grab her backpack when she evacuated. >> as we were leaving it was on fire. there were flames on either side of us. i don't even have shoes now. >> reporter: she like so many others waiting for the fire to end have only one hope. >> i hope they can get it under control soon. >> reporter: you think it is just rule out here, but as amanda's story proves, there are homes out here. that is what the firefighters are working to protect. it will be some time before they give the homeowners here full peace of mind. they don't expect full containment until august 10. andria borba, kpix5. >> there is good news for weather conditions there. the risk of worse conditions is gone. humidity has climbed, temperatures are in the mid 70s

and the winds are down. a firefighter was killed in another california firefighter and he was looking for ways to attack it when a sudden wind shift left him trruhl was a fire captain from south dakota here on temporary assignment. governor brown has ordered flags flown at half staff in his oner. and thousands of firefighters from across the u.s. have converged on california this week to battle some two dozen fires burning across the state. you can follow their progress online. we posted an interactive map of all the fires on cbssf.com. other news tonight, work to replace an aging but essential part of the bart station is on track. but it is slow going everywhere else. the bay bridge was backed up all day long while crews were hard at work replacing crossover tracks at the west oakland station. to do that, they have had to

shut down the transbay tube for the weekend. christian hartnett is at the temporary transbay terminal in san francisco with the battle to get across the bay. hi christian. >> reporter: hi brian. at this point, it has thinned out but for the most part today, pretty busy over here. with the absence of shuttle service this week, bart is providing bus service over the bay bridge. some confused travelers today, but for the most part, travel time wasn't bad at all. a helpful bart worker points east bay commuter to this bus outside the 19th street station. on its way across the bay bridge into san francisco. >> i like the fast act that is going on. and it is great. keep it up. >> reporter: bart has 94 buses chipping in this weekend. one running every 45 seconds from the 19th street station in oakland to the temporary transbay terminal in san francisco. and vice versa. >> i thought it was going to take a long time. an hour or something, but it was 15 minutes.

it was pretty quick. >> reporter: as bart workers try to make sure everyone knows where they are going, construction crews are pounding away to make repairs between the west oakland station an the transbay tube which includes replacing some 40-year-old track. >> we are thinking about three years, if we did nothing, we would have some serious problems with it. so we want to be in and replace it now. >> reporter: the repair process is on schedule to wrap up by the monday morning commute at 4:00 a.m. bart ridership was about half of what it typically is on a saturday and that definitely help first-degree buses handle the load with all the changes going on today. live in san francisco, christian hartnett, kpix5. >> all right. thanks christian. bart expects everything to be back to normal well ahead of the monday morning commute. in the meantime, we posted a list of transit alternatives on cbssf.com. police in san jose are investigating a wild chase and shoot-out that ended in a crash. it started last night near the convention center. officers say they approached a group of people when one took

off running. when they chased after him, they say he pulled out a gun and started shooting. an officer fired back, but no one was hit. they say the man then carjacked the vehicle and tried to run but he ended up crashing into another car. the suspect was arrested at the scene. no one in the other car was seriously hurt. tonight, police in concord want you to take a good lookout this photo. 52-year-old james melvin is a parolee at large. he is wanted in connection with a robbery and assault. he is a registered sex offender. he is six feet tall and 180 pounds. he has recently been seen driving in this gold 1991 honda accord. a woman is dead after being hit by a train in hayward. it happened around 4:30 this afternoon where the tracks cross industrial parkway. the woman died at the scene. investigators are looking into how it happened. tonight, the wing section that could unlock the mystery of the missing malaysia airlines plane has arrived in

france for analysis. meanwhile, jonathan vigliotti shows us more. >> reporter: the wing fragment called the flaperon arrived by police escort in france. it, along with the remains of a suitcase will be analyzed on wednesday. malaysian officials are not waiting for conclusive evidence to begin the next phase of their search for 370. they are sending crews to the area to help in the locals. >> do you think it belongs to the plane? >> we don't know. >> reporter: the wing flap was found here on the east coast of the island, an area known for its rough surf and for all the garbage the current brings in. this looks like a plastic magazine wrack and a singed and

shredded flotation device. it is unclear if the ocean is delivering clues or trash. it has been 17 months since the plane disappeared. strong currents are capable of carrying temperatures bree from its believed crash site over 2300 miles away. a memorial was held this afternoon on the island at a church just down the road from where the wreckage was discovered. a candle lit for everyone person who has not been found. family of the 239 people on board 370 say at this point, they just want answers. but even if that wing flap belongs to it, the experts say lit be difficult to trace back where that plane crashed into the indian ocean and where the rest of it is. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, reunion island. a couple of close calls over new york's jtk airport between commercial jets an drones. a jet blue pilot radioed the

tower yesterday afternoon saying a drone flew just under the plane's nose at 800 feet as the plane was on final approach. three hours later, a delta pilot reported seeing a drone off his right wing while coming in for a landing. >> these drones are made with aircraft aluminum. similar parts to the aircraft it is about to strike going into an engine, can destroy an engine. going into the cockpit window can injure a pilot or kill a pilot. >> both planes landed safely. it is unclear if it was the same drone that buzzed them both. the faa is looking into it. coming up, slam the door too hard and the air bag blows. a major car maker issues a massive recall tonight. >> plus, the high-tech tool helps police end a high speed chase. how they stopped this stolen car by remote control. >> is your neighbor a water hog? tonight, the state wants you to rat them out online. >> and, a hungry bear gets into a backyard. what happened when it got

below $2 a gallon. >> a high-tech tool helped police catch a car thief near los angeles. the stolen chevy was equipped with on star. the company sent a signal slows the vehicle to 5 miles an hour allowing the police to show up and arrest the driver. they use the technology several times a month. >> we have slowed down situations over 100 miles an hour. and the driver can put his foot all the way down to the floor and once we send the slow down signal, the car is not going anywhere. >> on star comes standard in most gm vehicles. >> if you drive a dodge charger be careful closing the car door. the side air bag might go off. fiatt chrysler is recalling 322,000 chargers because of the problem. the recall covers models from 2011-2014. owners will be notified to bring their cars in. the company only knows of three minor injuries from the air

water wasting neighbors. a waiter serves you water at a restaurant without asking? you can report that too. you can submit violations anonymously. then, a local government agency will take it from there. the drought is forcing more and more bears out of the hills in search of food. lemore abrams shows what happens when one of those bears got between a hungry homeowner and his chicken. some of these images are hard to look at. >> reporter: bears are known to get into people's trash, but this 300 found female bear laid dead in arlene olsen's yard after it attacked her neighbor's free roaming chickens and it wasn't the first time. >> i heard a gun go off. and, it raised a red flag and then i heard another shot. >> reporter: the department of fish and wildlife says the neighbor maintains he kills the bear in self-defense. olsen doesn't blame him.

>> if you had a bear in your yard, the first thing might be to do would be to kill it. >> reporter: but some neighbors say it didn't have to come to this. >> i think the bear came out because he is hungry. >> i wish they could have thought about killing a bear. >> reporter: officials loaded the bear onto a truck. the neighbor meanwhile didn't want to speak with us. >> sorry. >> reporter: investigators say the neighbor didn't have a permit to kill the bear, but had called the sheriff's department to complain about it. >> the whole situation happened, we didn't have to lose another bear. >> reporter: cindy mccale is with the bear league. she says it is important to educate people to scare the bears away. not resort to violence. >> i understand a bear is frightening but they live here. they are with us all the time just like cougars are. they live with us. >> reporter: under state law, homeowners are allowed to kill a bear if they catch it going after livestock.

let's switch gears and talk about the weather. and the traffic. the transbay tube has been closed all weekend and a lot of people have been on the bridges. the approach to the toll plaza doesn't look too bad on the bay bridge. on the golden gate bridge, things are running smoothly as well. san francisco, 64. san jose, 66. and santa rosa, 62 degrees. and that is how the golden gate bridge looks now. you can see the traffic coming into the city, flowing smoothly though there is a bit of a backup on the waldo bridge. concord, 66. still fairly balmy. that will change. low pressure is off the pacific northwest and that will begin to enhance the sea breeze so that tomorrow, numbers will come down a little bit. and then, mild temperatures all week for the bay area. on the future cast, look at the low clouds coming in over night. will halt this about midday tomorrow so you can see mostly sunny day in the bay area. except right at the shoreline. the day goes on, a few high clouds come up from down south.

aside from that, the low clouds just fill back in. so the ebb and flow of the low clouds as per usual as we head into august. boy, that was fast wasn't it? slight cooling continues then. tomorrow, and the rest of the week. inland highs will be near the low 80s . some coastal drizzle tomorrow morning. and that will be true for next week as well. some drizzle along the shoreline in the early doing. oakland is taking on the indians tomorrow. game time around 1:00. mostly sunny skies and temperatures, 72 degrees if we go out to the coliseum. and the sonoma county fair is happening out there. if you want to cool it off a little bit. stern grove festival, 64 degrees. partly cloudy skies. forecast for the rest, 67 in san francisco for tomorrow. concord, 81. san jose, 80. oakland, 72. pleasant day for the bay area with the south bay looking for plenty of sun. 81 in sunnyvale.
