oakland. and firefighters are no closer to containing it. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. and i'm brian hackney. tonight, a fire covers an area nearly the size of oakland. firefighters are no closer to containing it. >> good evening. the wildfire exploded over night nearly doubling in size. now it has scorched 47,000 acres. fire still just 5% contained. 24 homes have gone up in flames, thousands more are threatens and more than 12,000 people are under evacuation orders. firefighters are setting backfires to try to stop the flames from spreading. they say the steep terrain and the weather had been a

challenge. >> it could be worse. right now the thunderstorm risk has eased, winds not as strong as they were yesterday and even the temperature of 93 degrees is a little bit cooler than it was on saturday. >> well, just minutes ago a health advisory was lifted for the community rodeo after a flair up at the refinery. a witness tweeted this photo shortly after. you see there is no public health hazard. two armed robbers are on the loose tonight after using a machete to attack a person. the victim says two men got out of an old colored vuv and came after them. they took a cell phone and threatened to use the machete on them if they did not turn over more. all the guy had was a phone they took off.

>> still on track to reopen the cross over tracks near west oakland. in the meantime, b.a.r.t has been offering a bus bridge to help riders get across the area. they are telling people to stay home and avoid the traffic all together. >> 25-30% fewer folks here and a 50% reduction, we have more buses than we thought we originally were going to be running constantly. it is a good thing. a good thing, fewer people are coming out. >> it will be shutdown one more time after labor day weekend as for the rest of the weekend, we are here with a look at the traffic. lisa? >> reporter: the chp is telling me that they have seen traffic volumes throughout the bay area and a fewer number of accidents as well. folks seem to be listening to the warning and staying off of there. here we have seen a steady

stream of traffic all weekend. certainly no worse than any other sunday afternoon as we move on to the rest of the commute. 880 is busy all weekend long. still slow in both directions approaching and passing high streams at northbound drive. heavy approaching the maze. so, expect those delays for 880. the golden gate has taken the grunt of the traffic all weekend long with the transbay tube closure. looking at delays getting to and across the golden gate bridge. sanfrancisco, getting to the bridge. traffic backed up from 19th avenue at this hour. south 101. crowded from beyond. getting into san francisco and as we mentioned b.a.r.t tells us they ex pect to resume full- service including service in the tube at 4:00 tomorrow morning. if you are one of those folks who took a shuttle bus across the bay remember the last bus leaves san francisco terminal 1:30 this morning and the last bus leaves 19th street station

>> no. i think it is excessive and we will pay more for it. what we have right now is perfect. >> reporter: the b.a.r.t board is already preparing a ballot measure for next year asking voters for some of the $9 billion it needs to maintain the system we want to be sure that our crews can get in there and maintain trouble spots. >> reporter: in san francisco, back to you. a hearing is set for a class action lawsuit that could deal uber a huge financial blow. the ace aims to reclassify them as company employees rather than contractors. the difference is huge. if uber loses 160,000 california drivers they could be eligible for paid expenses like cars and gas and benefits like workers' comp. a lot of drivers say they like

their contract status because it offers more freedom. there is a court hearing set for friday on a motion filed by uber. the company wants the class action certification tossed and any ruling applied only to the drivers that filed suit. a similar suit pending against lyft. tonight, they are certain that the debris that washed ashore from mad gas car is from the same model aircraft as the missing plane. jonathan shows us that everyone from the police to the general public is now busy looking for more. >> reporter: this was thought to be a piece of metal debris. it turned out to be a rusty latter. last week's discovery of a wing flap on the beach turned islanders into amateur detects. this woman thinks this plastic

could be wreckage. >> reporter: the beach where the flap was found remains in the public. locals all over come here to help find clues. >> what happened here -- [indiscernible] >> where the plane may be. >> reporter: the wing flap and a suitcase are in france to be analyzed as an investigation that will begin on wednesday. the debris could tell them what happened to the plane. neither has been connected to mh370. the girls have sent the crew to the volcanic island in the western ocean to launch a formal search. the officials have also asked surrounding territories to help look for more pieces of the missing boeing 777. the doomed flight went missing 17 months ago when traveling to

one person are is dead. witnesses reported strong hail and lightning in the area before the tent blue away. three injured victims were seriously hurt. local police are investigating. a manhunt for a driver who shot and killed a police officer. it happened last night during a traffic stop. the investigators think the driver fired several shots at the officer before speeding off. they called for help but by then it was too late. >> the fact there are so many guns on our street in the wrong

hands that is the key. >> this is just a reminder of how dangerous this job is. >> he is the third phepl tpeus police officer to die in the line of duty in four years. -- memphis police officer to die in the line of duty in four years. the police are looking for a person who opened fire and injured people. 9 people were shot, four others were hit by debris. two of the victims are still in the hospital in serious condition. the motive for the mass shooter. a man who buried a bus full of children alive in a bay area curry back in the '70s will be set free. he has been behind bars for decades because of his part in the kidnappings. one of the victims said it is not long enough. >> reporter: after 40 years behind bars, james will be out

of prison and on parole. he is 63 years old, his older brother, richard, released three years ago. news of the latest release did not go over well with linda. she was one of the victims. >> i was -- nauseous and then very tearful. first i think first of other children. the children that were in the kidnapping itself as well as children in the future. >> reporter: linda was 9 years old when she and her three sisters were among the 26 children on that bus when it was hijacked. they were hearded into moving vans and hidden in a tray hror buried in a rock quarry. they dug their way out. now a schoolteacher she thinks it sends the wrong message and fears it puts other children at risk. >> how the laws affect them and crimes that might be committed where people will think i will probably just do 20 years and i will get my freedom again, no big deal. >> reporter: all three kidnappers were sentenced to

life in prison. two are out now and it bothers her the third kidnapping, woods, has a parole hearing coming up soon and likely will be released as well. >> i think each of the men had 26 life sentences one for each child and they will not serve one. >> some criticize brown for not overturning the board's position but his office noted he only can do that in murder cases. still to come, a determined and exhausted group of cyclists just reached the golden gate bridge after riding all of the way across the country for a cause. and the endless cycle of cooling in, warming in, it is not ending yet.

californians are cutting back on water usage. it dropped in june compared to 2013. the bay area did better, 32% well above the governor's 25% goal. a group of college students completed the summer trip of a lifetime. they travel friday new york to san francisco to raise money for cancer research. as kpix5 mark kelly shows us, they did it one pedal at a time. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: it was long. >> a little over 10 weeks. we are finally here. >> a lot of climbing. one day we peaked at 11,000 feet. >> reporter: they still made the coast to coast trek from new york city to san francisco on 2 wheels. their minds. >> i was riding for my grandmother. she died when i was about 5. i remember her having cancer. >> i am going for my aunt. >> reporter: by the time the bikers got here they made $100,000. >> wow! >> cheers, cheers. >> it is awesome so many people support us during this ride. >> reporter: that money will go towards chancer research and patient services. this journey for these young people turned out to be about much more than a fund-raising total. >> each town we stopped in someone came up with us, i know someone affected by cancer, i have been affected by cancer. >> it opened my eyes, it stretches everywhere. >> reporter: in san francisco, park kelly, kpix5. >> boy, what an adventure. we have mostly sunny skies around the bay area heading into the evening hours. things did cool. the temperatures came down from 1-6 degrees on average.
