live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. tonight, the rocky fire is bigger than the entire city of oakland. firefighters are no closer to containing it. good evening. the wildfire in the county now covers 54,000 acres. that is more than 84 scare miles. tonight it is still 5% contained. fires exploded in size if the past 24 hours partly because firefighters actually let it run towards a rugged unpopulated area to focus on saving homes. more than 6300 homes are still threatened tonight. at least two dozen have already

been lost. firefighters just setting backfires now to stop the main blaze from crossing highway 20. some of them have been working weeks straight as california fires continue to burn out of control. >> when we are done with this one we will be on to the next one. >> does it wear you out? >> did t does, -- it does, yes. >> one firefighter said he never seen anything like it. fast-moving flames going through thousands of acres of dry brush in three counties. tripling in size in just 2 days. just how much more can the rocky fire burn? that is a question no one has an answer to. >> the fire behavior we are seeing because of the dry vegetation is -- it is historic. >> reporter: he is one of more than 2,000 firefighters around the state on the fire linesment -- fire lines. >> we have not seen fire grow

in that magnitude, that short amount of time. >> we are on the back end of this fire. you can see the flames slowly back down here. >> drought or no drought it is fire country. >> reporter: she lives on the yollo side of the fire. she has not evacuated yet but realizes she may have to. >> we are used to it. >> reporter: this fire is scorching new territory, 12,000 people now under some kind of e -- evacuation order. >> terrifying. you get everything you can, take care of your animals and do what you can to get out of here. >> a viewer sent us a photo earlier today from the walmart in clear lake. the fire actually is a couple miles away but you would not know it from the size of that smoke cloud. one bit of good news can be found in the forecast. a little cooler in the area tomorrow. the winds only 15 miles an hour. still dry, though, low humidity. the temperatures near 90 degrees. you can follow the firefight on

our web site. we posted an interactive map with all of the fires burning across america. tonight, warning signs are going up in a couple of san francisco neighborhoods after a series of sexual assaults on women in the russian hill and knob hill areas. we will only see it on 5:00. joe? >> reporter: an area with crowds of tourists and locals often walking around late at night. now the police say it is a big reason to be on alert. >> last saturday night. unfiltered in tide. neighbors say they heard screams coming in from a dark stair case, a woman was knocking on doors and ringing doorbells, the latest victim of what the police believe is a series of attacks on woman between russian hill and knob hill. a source close to the investigation tells me there are three to four. the suspect comes from behind,

through their clothing and running away. they are random, the source says, the woman do not know their attacker. >> disturbing. i never open my door without looking out the window first. >> i am worried. this is where my kids play, where my family thrives. >> reporter: concerned neighbors have gone so far to post flyers on light poles and mail boxes also on social media, warning woman to be careful about how they interact with strangers. the police say they ask the public to be aware as they walk around in these neighborhoods especially at night when so many people are on their cell phones. flooding the area with undercover officers hoping to catch the suspect if he strikes again. >> it is awful. hopefully, like if we get together as a community and make a difference hopefully we will go in it. >> reporter: i am told one victim fought back. according to the source the groper attacked her from behind, she then turned on him,

she happens to know martial arts and she attacked him back and chased him away. >> she was very alert, all right, joe, thank you. a couple behind bars tonight accused of car jacking a vehicle during a test drive in vacaville. the investigators say shane woodkobg and shauna macklamore dropped it on friday before flashing a gun and speeding away. the police caught up to them after a short chase. similar story out of concord last week. a man showed up and took a van for a test drive. things took a terrifying turn when he told the salesman he was taking the vehicle ask kidnapping him. the salesman escaped. a tracking unit led the police to the suspect and the van. tonight, b.a.r.t is on track to reopen the tube in time for the morning commute. trains should be running through the tunnel again by 4:00 a.m. the tube has been closed all weekend while crews replace a key section of the upon tras near west oakland.

sergeant who was killed in the line of duty last month. kpix5 explains that particular flag is so special. >> reporter: an hour ago a special ceremony was held right here in front of the police department. this flag behind me here, we will give it a zoom there, will remain up until tomorrow afternoon. 15 hours total. each hour representing a year of the sergeant's service on the hayward police force. the police officers hoisted the u.s. honor flag. it is the effort of a nonprofit organization that brings this flag around to honor fallen service members. he was killed on july 22nd during a routine traffic stop. just a few days ago, 5,000 people gathered at the arena in oakland for his funeral. that is when chris hisler the founder of the network traveled cross country to bring the flag here to the hayward police department. >> i understand this flag brings a level of comfort,

the police believe that bolton interrupted some sort of drug deal. well, a couple of close calls with drones over new york airports has brought out new calls tonight for tougher regulations. drones were seen friday nearly -- near jfk in new york city and spotted recently at other airports in the region including one that got on the landing path of a plane. newyork senator says a simple change to the drone software could help avoid a deadly disaster. somewhat we should add geo- fencing. no drone, a $50 or a $5,000 one should be able to fly within 2 miles af an -- of an airport. in&out customer claims he found something in his milk shake that was not on the menu. meth. the man is suing the restaurant saying he got sick after drinking the milk shake. he found two capsules at the
