this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, august 3rd, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. wildfires are forcing thousands of families from their homes in california this morning. crews are battling 21 large wildfires throughout the state. the largest is the rocky fire raging near lower lake about 100 miles north of san francisco. that wild fire exploded in size sunday growing to at least 84 square miles. air tankers are dousing the flames from above. lamore abrams of our sacramento affiliate kobr reports. >> reporter: fast-moving flames continues raging through thousands of acres of dry brush. tripling in size in just two days. just how much more the rocky fire will burn is a question no one has an answer to. >> the fire behavior that we're seeing because of the dry

vegetation is -- it's historic. >> reporter: steve kaufman is one of more than 2,000 firefighters from around the state on the fire line, but even with the constant water drops overhead, it just keeps raging. >> we haven't seen fire really grow in that magnitude in that short of an amount of time. >> reporter: we're in yellow county on the back end of this fire and you can see these flames slowly back down this hillside. >> dry or no dry, this is fire country. >> reporter: lynn borgoletti lives on the yolo side of the fire. she hasn't evacuated yet but realizes she may need to. >> we're kind of used to. >> reporter: not everyone is used to it. it's scorching new territory. 12,000 people under some kind of evacuation order and for many it's a matter of get in the car and go. >> terrifying but you just go and get everything you can, take care of your animals and do what you can to get out of here. >> reporter: and this is the case throughout northern california. road closures. sheriff's deputies turning people around as firefighters

continue battling these fast-moving flames. in calusa california, lamore air brams, cbs news. one man was killed and several others hurt when a fast-moving storm blue over a tent. they had taken cover under the tent to escape from hail and rain and that's when the high winds ripped it from its moorings and tossed it into the crowd. >> the tent flew off into the sky and the fence flew off and everybody was on the floor and you heard screaming and crying. >> the storm threw chairs tables and other debris onto the grass. organizers canceled the remainder of the festival. storms interrupted the lowell la pa lose za festival in grant part. 89,000 music fans were safely evacuated and then let back in a short time later but organizers eventually ended the festival early after another wave of

storms swept in. heavy rain brought flash flooding to the tampa, florida, area. the region broke rainfall records saturday and got more sunday. swollen creeks overflowed turning creeks into rivers. some drivers abandoned their cars on inundated roads. flood warnings remain in effect. it is the start of one of the most anticipated weeks in recent political memory. on thursday ten candidates in the crowded republican presidential race will meet up for the first debate and tonight we get a preview when 14 of the gop contenders share a stage in new hampshire. one candidate who will not be there is donald trump. he finds himself at the top of another poll out this weekend. trump's early success has put other candidates into attack mode, but the billionaire is sticking to his message. >> i'm not a debater. i don't stand up and debate like these politicians. they're all talk, no action. all they do their whole life is debate. >> reporter: donald trump

continued to draw differences between himself and other gop candidates on sunday. the real estate mogul called in to cbs's face the nation and said he fights hard to pay as little in taxes as possible. >> i'll be probably the first candidate in the history of politics within this country to say, i try, and like every -- by the way, like every single taxpayer out there, i try to pay as little tax as possible. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump's opponents took aim. >> donald trump wants to be the commander in chief of the united states and he does not know that it is the federal government's responsibility to secure the border. >> anybody can do well for a month in this business especially if you have talent and you have personality. >> when i'm in the first debate which is the happy hour debate at 5:00 start drinking. by 9:00 donald may make sense to you if you drink enough. >> reporter: while the gop slug fest is set to hit a fever pitch this week there could be a big shakeup on the democratic side. signs are pointing toward a

police dash cam video captures a brave officer in a detroit suburb helping a skunk in distress sunday. the baby skunk had his head stuck in a yogurt container. officer merlin taylor moved in very carefully before he removed the container and ran. the skunk tried to spray him but was unable to release an odor because he was too young and too cute. it is the end of the road for a world famous hitchhiking robot. hitchbot was on its first journey in america but he met his demise in philadelphia on saturday. steve patterson of our philadelphia station kyw spoke with its creator. >> reporter: this is the way family wants to remember hitchbot.

the robot now famous for hitchhiking across canada, germany, and the netherlands, was just starting his adventure in the eastern united states and then he came to philadelphia. >> we're very disappointed. >> reporter: hitchbot is survived by his parents. >> i'm surprised how upset we actually are. i didn't expect that. i think that image that's been circulated now on social media is quite upsetting. >> reporter: hitchbot was designed as a social experiment to appear child like and defenseless going from one social interaction to another dependent on the care of humans and the kindness of strangers to get across the country. >> we just picked up a hitchhiking robot. this is so weird. >> it was supposed to test the human spirit. along the oldest street in philadelphia we failed that test. the image of a dismembered robot slain in philly has gone viral. >> we have to leave him.
