dead up -- tells what is led up to the -- us what led up to the deadly confrontation. >> reporter: that's what officers say they were up against, a suspect shooting at them with an illegal assault rifle. the scene of the officer-involved shooting in oakland this morning. >> many rounds were fired. it's likely close to a full magazine if not full. >> reporter: 9:00 sunday night, officers began investigating report of a sexual assault. that led them to a suspect in a house on the 3800 block of mlk. >> the suspect ultimately came out of the front door with a rifle. and immediately began firing upon the officers that were in front of house. >> reporter: the two officers returned fire striking the suspect. police say at least 30 shots were exchanged. one of the officers was hit. the suspect and officer were transported to the hospital. the suspect died of his injuries and the officer recently promoted to sergeant and a 14 year veteran is expected to recover. >> the police officer sustained significant gunshot wounds. and is currently in serious but

stable condition. has already undergone one surgery. and will likely have multiple -- more surgeries forthcoming. >> reporter: the other officer has only been with the oakland police department for one year. the suspect was a 49-year-old oakland resident. police say they aren't looking for anyone else related to the case. in oakland, lisa chan, kpix 5. this is oakland's fourth officer-involved shooting this year. california declares a state of emergency 25 wildfires burning across the state. the largest one north of the bay area already destroyed two dozen homes and today firefighters are getting an extra past from -- an extra boost from the national guard. cbs reports from the fire lines in lake county with chris mart these. >> reporter: the r.a. dickey i can field wire northwest of sacramento -- rocky wildfire northwest of sacramento exploded over the weekend. thousands of homes are in its path and the area is under a mandatory evacuation. >> couldn't get back if i wanted to. and with the fire danger, i'm not sure i want to. >> reporter: richard hardy is

concerned about two of his three cats. he was forced to leave them behind as the flames drew closer. >> they seem to have an ability to escape fires. so i'm hoping that they did. >> reporter: the fire started wednesday and grew quickly. thanks to a erratic winds and high heat. >> just continues until we get significant rainfall is the fear. >> reporter: crews are working to keep the fire from spreading to the town of clear lake. where 15,000 people live. the national guard is even helping out, scooping and dropping water from a chinook harassment and more than 3,000 firefighters -- helicopter and more than 3,000 firefighters are here. >> here we go. >> reporter: that is squeezing resources. chris martinez, cbs news, lake port, california. >> and it's a dangerous job one firefighter was killed thursday in a fire 100 miles south of the oregon border. >> and several others have been burned. the rocky fire can be seen all the way from space. check it out.

this photo from nasa shows a plume of smoke in the clear lake area. you can tell it's not the same as a normal cloud it's not quite as dense and looks gray instead of white. you can also follow the fire fight on our website. posted an interactive map of the fires burning across the state at cbssf.com. now some cooler weather is helping crews fight the flames. roberta gonzales with a look at some of the temperatures. we've been saying this for quite some time now. fire season is 12 months a year and 24/7. but we certainly do have a little bit of good news today. let me explain why. first off, we have this upper level trough just hanging out over the western pacific. it does so it's really enhancing the marine layer. therefore temperatures have been coming down. and in fact we'll have additional cooling taking place on our tuesday. now the only problem is the winds. they have been picking up with that sea breeze out of the west at 14 in oakland currently. 10 as we go la little bit

further north. right around the clear lake area weapon speeds up to -- wind speeds up to 15 miles per hour. they increase during the afternoon hours generally but the relative humidity is up. it's certainly not down. we're going to talk more about the fire fighter weather pattern coming up shortly in the newscast. thanks. investigators meanwhile are calling three separate fires at a hayward apartment complex suspicious. the flames forced about 100 people out of their homes on silva avenue around 3:30 this morning. it turns out there were three separate blazes on the third floor and investigators now looking into it. palo alto police are now looking for three men who tried to rob a family. it happened just just before 10:00 a.m. on suzanne drive. teen who opened the door says a man had a gun the other had a knife. the other suspect did not appear to be armed. suspects ran off when the victim's father ran to help his family. investigators believe they picked this family specifically but they're not saying why. l. a. police are looking

for a special olympics athlete who went missing at l. a. x.. us male is from the ivory coast and investigators say he wandered away from the group near the delta ticketing area at the airport this morning. the 15-year-old only speaks french and he competed in table tennis at the world games. now the teen athlete's disappearance comes just hours after another special olympian went missing over the weekend in l. a.. then showed up in the bay area this morning. andi gusmari walked into the hayward police department around 2:00 a.m. the 44-year-old was reported missing on saturday after he separated from his bowling team on the usc campus. investigators are scratching their heads trying to figure out how he ended up more than 350 miles away. >> we don't know how he arrived here. but we do know that he's in good spirits and he's healthy and he's doing fine. >> his mother actually called him this morning.

through a translator we let her know we found him and obviously she's very pleased. >> once he gets back to l. a. the special olympics organizing committee will arrange to have someone accompany him back to albania. b.a.r.t. trains up and running again between oakland and san francisco after the transbay tube was closed all weekend long for maintenance. crews replaced a section of crossover tracks. transbuy service is scheduled to be shut down again too over the labor day weekend. meanwhile b.a.r.t. says the aging transit system still needs $9 billion worth of maintenance. a bonds measure could be on the local ballot in one of next year's elections to fund that. police say a woman stole thousands of dollars worth of items from a san francisco home she rented through the airbnb website. surveillance video shows her from last april, the suspect 27- year-old jana dominguez, the victim says the thief broke into a locked office and closet and took items valued at some $35,000. well, another dead whale

that's washed up on a san mateo county beach is attracting a a lot of attention. the carcass appeared on shore in pacifica yesterday. it is somewhat decomposed with a foul stench. researchers have collected samples and hopes of determining a cause of death. >> there have been lots of humpbacks and lots of blue whales feeding, very large numbers. hundreds of them at a time. so it's not unusual. >> well, scientists say there are reports of another dead whale floating offshore. so yet another carcass could wash up soon. up next search efforts ramping up for possible wreckage from the missing malaysian flight 370. how locals on reunion island are pitching in to separate the trash from the clues. >> and california's drought drags on forcing the government to issue water restrictions. so who should be first in line at the spigot? how americans think water should be managed. >> from the kpix weather center. good afternoon everyone. we certainly have cooler conditions today.

french investigators are meeting with a judge this morning to discuss the possible piece of wreckage from missing malaysian flight 370. >> cbs' jonathan vigliotti reports from the island of reunion where the partial wing was found. >> reporter: the local beach cleaning crew that found a flaperon last wednesday was back this morning looking for more debris. there was for a moment hope yesterday that what police put in these silver cases were more pieces of an airplane. instead, they were just parts of a rusty ladder.

reunion's east coast is still open to the public and low cools have come -- locals have come here to help find more clues. >> maybe we can discover more details and what's happened about the plane. >> reporter: but on a beach where every washed up bit of weather debris could belong to anything, separating trash from hard evidence is difficult. the main piece of evidence, that fragment of wing arrived on mainland france on saturday for an investigation that is set to begin on wednesday. boeing officials confirm it is a piece of wing from one of their 777s. and mh 370 is the only missing 777 in the world. there is hope the island will unlock the mystery of what happened to mh 370 and the 238 people who vanished without a trace 16 months ago. malaysian crews arrived here on the island of reunion on saturday. they are now asking other territories to bring backup. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, reunion. french investigators are expected to begin the formal

examination of that partial wing on wednesday to confirm if it actually did come from that missing malaysia flight 370. well, when it comes to water, most americans think of it as a limited resource that can be depleted if we use too much. but that's according to a new associated press poll. the national survey found seven out of ten people believe the government should restrict how much people and businesses use water during a drought. seven out of ten also believe farmers should get top priorities for water. i don't think we got rain in the forecast. but at least temperatures are going down. >> we certainly did get a little bit of drizzle this morning and kind of spot-on there frank. from the low clouds and patchy fog this morning but boy are we clearing out nicely now and we have temperatures according to the weather watchers i just love because they are telling me what they're seeing in their neighborhood, we're seeing 60s and 70s and 80s. let's take a look at this one right here, 81 degrees. that would be paul smith in brentwood. checking in with lots of sunshine. let's see if anybody has sent us any recent photos that look

gorgeous. that's light niece moon from peggy rodgers and she is in the petaluma area and says that was a full moon before the fog rolled in. the fog certainly did early this morning but look at this. nothing but blue skies from san jose -- wow -- that's gorgeous. temperatures right now 60s and 70s. it is now 77 degrees in concord. low 70s in santa rosa. let's take a look at the lick observatory, not a cloud in the sky at santa clara valley. sausalito to san francisco again the skies have cleared what a beautiful view. and the coast is clear. but we do have some breezy west winds some gusts now up to 21 miles per hour. very robust sea breeze. we have a break from the summer heat and arraignened lairy as -- our inland areas. the coolest day is going to be friday. you can clearly see the marine layer well defined along the coast here then breaking up. we will see the return of that enhanced marine layer again later on tonight. but with this upper level trough, hanging out over the western pacific it's been enhancing the marine layer for us the stiff sea breeze today

but the temperatures are coming down. due to that cooler air out over the pacific ocean. really great news for fire fighting efforts and mild conditions all week long. if if you want to see when the fog and low clouds will return take a look at the futurecast and you can play along at home. there's the overnight hours and in fact the marine layer is going to stretch inland at least a good 60 to 70 miles, if you're in the inland locations you will have gray conditions on tuesday. it's now 68 going up to 79 in the high sierra. sundown 8:16. sun up at 6:16. yeah staying darker later in the morning hours isn't it? temperatures 60s 70s and 80s across the board today very comfortable but that upper level trough out over the ocean as it comes to the coast temperatures come down tomorrow only to rebound wednesday and thursday. coolest day is on friday and roller coaster right? we have temperatures pretty mild all week long. >> but that cooldown? nice. it's perfect. >> excellent last week duh ebb -- you remember this time last

week we had triple digits and humidity down the about 12%. now the humidity is up to about 5% right now. good news. -- 55% rye. good news. not such a hot day though on wall street. today getting out of the gates, not so swell here down 165 points. at this hour. vice president joe biden is said to be eyeing another white house bid. aides have reportedly been talking to party leaders and donors after biden's son beau urged limb to run for president before his death last may. meanwhile the first tv commercials for hillary clinton's campaign begin airing this week in the early primary states of iowa and new hampshire. vice president biden is currently third in the polls behind clinton and bernie sanders. democratic senator chuck schumer and comedian amy schumer are teaming up to crack down on gun violence. two schumers by the way are cousins and held a press conference today calling for tighter gun control. senator schumer unveiled a three part plan that would make it more difficult for violent criminals and commently ill people to get their hands on

guns. it comes following the deadly louisiana movie theater shooting last month during the screening of the movie "trainwreck" starring amy schumer. >> my heart goes out to jillian and may see, to the survivors and everything and everyone who's tied to the actions of this man who shouldn't have been able to put his hands on a gun in the first place. >> the senator schumer's legislation would also create funding for states that submit all necessary records into the background check system. jurors in colorado have decided to keep the depth as an option -- death penalty as answer for james holmes. the jury will make its final decision on whether holmes should be behind bars for life or die from lethal injection. last month the same jury convicted him of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others in the july 2012 shootings. up next an approach to a deadly problem. how california police officers are using special signs to

perfect one. >> well today's tip of the day is with limes. in the summertime sales spike. you know why? it's used so many different ways and different salads and refreshing a drink. limes are refreshing this time of year and selection in storage is so important. otherwise when you cut it in half to get the juice out it's going to be nothing there. forget it it will be dry. when you buy it the shinier, the smoother the skin, the better they're going to be. very important. if the skin is not shiny, and has a lot of ridges around it, a good chance that lime is going to be dry inside. when you bring them home, do not store them in the refrigerator. store them on the counter, limes remember a couple of years ago? or just last year they were very, very expensive. about $1.50 to $2 each. crazy price on limes. now? the limes are a great price. and the quality is even better. that's good. and i'm tony tantillo the fresh grosser and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. smooth and a little bit on the soft side. they're all right. >> i always put them in the

now involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year that kill 6,000 people.
