live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix-5 news. another tragedy on the frontlines of the california wildfires after a firefighter is killed. battling the fire at the national forest near southlake tahoe. the u.s. forest service says the accident happened at 5:30 yesterday afternoon while crews were battling the flames in a

remote area. he was killed fighting the fire. the forest service says he was upon trapped by the fire after a sudden wind shift, david ruhl was a fire captain on assignment from south dakota. flames 70% contained. all evacuations have been lifted. fire burned more than 69,000 acres and destroyed 43 homes. firefighters hope to have it contained by thursday. meanwhile we are still waiting to see how much federal firefighter will money california might get this season. the state spent $200 million on wildfires over the last 2

years. firefighters say right now prioritizing is key. >> when our firefighters and the public are threat ended by fire that is the highest priority. property comes next. natural resources and structure comes after that. >> fire burning in rugged terrain wilderness will not get the same attention as the fire closing in on a community. you may of felt it. a small earthquake rattled nerves in parts of the bay area this afternoon. several of our kpix viewers called the news room saying it felt like a sharp jolt. it turned out to be a 3.3 quake centered over of the coast of san francisco. there are no reports of damage or injuries. one of football's biggest legends has died. frank giffork was a star on the field before becoming a broadcaster for monday night football. -- frank gifford was a star on the field before becoming a broadcaster for monday night football.

>> reporter: after retiring gifford was not finished with football. he became the pillar of the popular "monday night football" broadcast team from 1971 until 1985. a statement from the family reads in part. we rejoice in the extraordinary life he was 55 hrepbled to live and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by an amazing human being. gifford was born in santa monica in 1930. he attended usc on a football scholarship and drafted into the nfl in the first round back in 1952. he married talk show host cathy lee gifford in 1985. he leaves behind two children and his wife. a child was found unresponsive. the toddler was taken to the hospital and died. 27-year-old man told the police the toddler accidentally fell off of a table.

an autopsy later determined the cause of death as homicide. tragedy inside of a texas home tonight. 8 people were found murdered including 6 children. reporter brian web tells us the suspect could be the father. >> reporter: 48-year-old david conely surrendered after an hourlong standoff. the authorities say he broke into his former home, handcuff and shot 6 children and two adults in the head including his former partner, valerie jackson. >> mass killings it in the taking of the entire family are a tragedy. >> reporter: saturday evening the sheriff's office got a call from a relative asking for a check on the home. when the deputied spotted the body of a child through the window they forced their way inside and say -- when the deputy spotted the body of a child through the window they forced their way inside and say the man started firing. the authorities say he could be the father of one or more of

the children. ages from 6-13. the sheriff says the exact motive remains a mystery. >> the killer's the motives appear to be related to a dispute with valerie who was his former domestic partner. >> reporter: there have been checks at this home before. brian webb for cbs news. there is new video of the moments before a college football player was shot to death by the police in texas. surveillance video shows christian taylor as he enters a car dealership in a dallas suburb. he is seen jumping on a car and breaking the windshield. he then appears to leave but gets into his jeep and plows through the gate and heads into the show room. he was not armed and he was shot by a police officer in a confrontation, the fbi has been invited to assist in the investigation. a somber anniversary today in ferguson, missouri. it was one year ago that a police officer shot and killed

an unarmed black teenager. it sparked violent protesters nationwide the unarmed 18-year- old was shot by a police officer a year ago today. protesters bowed their heads in a moment of silence to reflect on a life cut short. some wore t-shirts with "chosen for change" the rally had special purpose for this family. >> it is hard for me because i have two young sons and i don't want them to grow up in this kind of environment with the police, you know, attacking the african-american community. >> the grand jury ruled that wilson, the police officer who killed brown did nothing wrong. brown's death sparked the "black lives matter" movement bringing attention of the shooting deaths of other pwhrabgs at -- blacks and seeing it nationwide. there have been changes made in

the police have one of their k-9 back home tonight after the dog went on the lamb. here is nico. well we will show you nico soon. everyone was smiles when he was reunited with the the police this morning. he escaped around 11:00 last night. they don't know how. 3 area police departments all pitched in to find him. there you go. the officer spotted him late this morning along a creek in the blossom valley part of san jose. >> we are relieved that everybody is safe and sound

including our dog. >> the police say they are looking into how nico escaped. he does not escape again. this was the handler's first time working with a k-9 and the young dog has only been on the job for a few weeks. it is the final day for outside lands and the music festival saved some of the best for last. elton john and sam smith are the headliners. they flooded into golden gate park for food and entertainment. thousands of people came to the festival each and every year. organizers say this year tickets sold out in record time less than an hour. the police say so far things have been calm. they only had to deal with a few scalpers and fence jumpers but they were caught. >> well, all right. >> we have headlines across the pacific where a hurricane is bearing down on hawaii. still 600 miles east-southeast of the big island. it was yesterday an impressive hurricane, hurricane hilda but

it will have the breath knocked out of it by the time it gets closer to hawaii on wednesday morning. it will be downgraded to a tropical storm and probably by the time it gets near the hawaii islands it will be just a tropical depression, the biggest impacts will be surf. maybe rains it all depends how close it gets and which side it goes up the big island. but it will not be a hurricane by the time it gets there wednesday and thursday. bay area, low clouds flooding in over the bridge. still 86 degrees at concord and 22 degrees back of that. here we are with overcast skies. drizzle tomorrow morning along the coast and around the bay, we will start out on monday with cloudy skies and 63 degrees inland. it will be about 65 with partly cloudy skies and low clouds going back to the the shorelines, low pressure hanging off of the pacific northwest will get close to central california. off shore by tuesday. and, with the low pressure comes lower temperatures and

more low clouds along the shorelines, we will increase the sea breeze and the clouds along the coast. knocking it down a couple degrees a day. high pressure building back in. friday, saturday, sunday, the weekend will be warming up and wel be -- and we will make for more of that. high clouds going through overnight. this is 7 -- 7:00 in the morning. this is overcast. more clouds coming through. you can see it coming through in the afternoon. we will get sun and clouds and cooler temperatures. so, to sum it up as we look out for the cooling down expected for monday. a little bit. and then more low clouds heading into the bay area later in the week. but next weekend, friday, saturday, sunday, bumping the numbers up a little bit.
