police still. police still searching for a woman who jumped or fell from the bay bridge. it started with a solo car crash. anne makovec has a series of events this morning that ended with a woman lost.

>> reporter: there are a couple of pockets at this hour. the woman may have died in the bay or she might have made it out of the water and gotten a ride out of the area as a couple of of the possibilities at this hour. the search went on for six hours by air and by boat for a woman at the center of a mystery that began with a car accident on the bay bridge. >> i can only say it's a businesses star story. >> reporter: around 2 a.m. -- i can only say it's a bizarre story. >> reporter: around 2 a.m. the car crashed eastbound. >> when we get there the vehicle is abandoned. >> reporter: three women in the car had jumped a fence onto the bike path. then the woman who was the driver made a move. >> jumped over the rail and was holding from the railing and as the officer was about 50 yards away, she began to slip and fall. >> reporter: she fell 75 feet into the water which is a chilly 60 degrees.

>> and hypothermia sets in, it could cause cold water drowning, not having insulated layers or life vest decreases the time of how long you can be in the water. >> reporter: later this morning the chp got calls about a woman matching the driver's description getting out of water near the radio towers and a dump truck driver later reported having picked the woman up. but now officers can't find her nor can they confirm it was the woman who fell. officers took the other two passengers in for questioning this morning trying to get a sense of the woman's state of mind. on treasure island, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> this is what the search did to the morning commute. traffic was backed up well past the toll plaza nice and early. the search was going on right during the heart of rush hour. and this is how it looks right now. traffic moving a little bit more smoothly at this hour but still a little backed up. new at noon, san francisco police say they caught a bike thief redhanded. police spotted nicholas somers on market street and suspect he

was riding a stolen bike and trying to sell it. they found a stun gun, pepper spray and possible burglar tools. the 36-year-old is already on probation for robbery. he was released on his own recognizance. a man is under arrest following a 12-hour standoff in morgan hill. kpix 5's kiet do with how it came to an end. >> reporter: take a look at the house. this is what it looks like after a 12-hour s.w.a.t. standoff in morgan hill just a mess inside. the doors were left open. the there were holes poked in the house and they sprayed tear gas inside there pretty much stuff left everywhere. >> i don't know -- it sounded like i don't know like a flash- bang or -- >> reporter: this all began around 1:00 yesterday afternoon when police got a call of a wanted felon on manor court in morgan hill. when officers arrived, they saw the man go into the house and we were told that it's the home of a friend. however, since the man was wanted for several violent felonies out of san jose, it's

unclear if he was armed. police told the homeowners to get out and evacuated the neighborhoods. morgan hill police called the s.w.a.t. team. they tried to use a bull horn and coax them out over the next couple of hours. he didn't budge until about 1:00 this morning. he is 24 years old and was booked into the santa clara county jail. >> at this point we're not disclosing what felony warrants he has. we are simply indicating he does have several felony warrants out of san jose. >> reporter: the neighborhood is back open again. everybody is allowed back into their homes. in morgan hill, kiet do, kpix 5. >> and police are thanking neighbors for their patience. so far, police have not released the name of the man under arrest. chainsaws were hard at work this morning in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. a tree fell taking out some power lines at columbus avenue and filbert street. no outages were reported. muni was not affected. checking the latest on the northern california wildfires, right now "jerusalem fire" is still growing. more people are being evacuated

today as the latest wildfire in lake and napa counties has grown over 16,000 acres. the "jerusalem fire" burning since sunday is only 6% contained. so far no homes have burned. 50 structures are threatened near middletown. the cause is under investigation. this fire is burning near the larger destructive "rocky fire" which is now 88% contained. an apartment explosion in oakland left a man dead and wounded two alameda county sheriff's deputies. a man being evicted allegedly set a trap by turning on the natural gas and jamming the lock. when the locksmith tried to drill it open yesterday, a spark set off the explosion knock the two deputies against the wall. the deputies and locksmith were hurt but survived. two families ended up homeless. oakland may be the hottest rental market in the nation. the average cost of rent jumped 20% in the past year according to to a website. it's now nearly $2,000 a month for a one bedroom unit in oakland. as kpix 5's christin ayers

explains, what you will get for all that money. reporter: kate miller is lucky. my jaw dropped when she told me how little she is paying for her rent controlled studio in oakland. >> i pay like $600. >> reporter: $600? that's all? unheard of! >> that's what i'm saying. >> reporter: these days oaklanders are staying put in rent controlled apartments because leaving means paying double, triple or quadruple the rent. some of the hottest locations, lake merritt and adams point, where one bedrooms are going for up to $2,500 a month. >> we have never seen rents this high. we have never seen a higher rent per foot than we are now. >> reporter: brandon geraldo vice president of a real estate company says he has also never seen competition for oakland apartments this stiff. >> many owners that we talk to on a daily basis are saying, we are getting, you know, 20 to 30 to 40 applications on one unit. >> reporter: one of those building owners's his company owns 800 units in oakland.

his biggest renters? millennials whose tech salaries are big but not quite big enough to live in san francisco. >> why wouldn't you want to live in oakland? it's warmer than san francisco. it's more affordable than san francisco. you get more space than you get in san francisco. >> reporter: so how long will the boom last? he has high hopes. >> we are going to see rents collide between san francisco and oakland. >> reporter: but colliers's brokers say there's been unprecedented growth. 10 to 15% every year for the last three years. and that has to change. >> i mean, it will have to tap out at some point. >> reporter: in oakland, christin ayers, kpix 5. >> but even with the recent spike, oakland is still less expensive than san jose or san francisco. still to come, fans show their feelings in the "deflate- gate" scandal. why tom brady was back in federal court today. >> and a beauty queen behind bars. what she was claiming that led to thousands of dollars in donations. >> speaking of beauty, take a look outside. it's our live weather camera looking out towards the city of

tom brady back in federal court over the "deflate-gate" scandal. the san mateo native is challenge his four-game suspension for using under inflated footballs during the afc title game. the next step is a closed-door meeting with brady and nfl commissioner roger goodell. outside the court hearing fans sported deflated football hats and booed goodell as he entered the courtroom. meanwhile the raiders' future in oakland in limbo. a local community group holding a news conference in support of a plan to keep the team from

moving. the oakland united coliseum wants the coliseum city project to include jobs for localler workers. since yesterday the raiders submitted its proposal to team owners to move south to play in a stadium outside l.a. a pennsylvania beauty queen is charged with faking cancer. they say she lied to bilk thousands of dollars in donations. >> do you have anything to say? >> 23-year-old beauty queen brandi lee weaver gates leaving court after being charged with several felonies. according to the criminal complaint, she told her friends and family that she was diagnosed can stage 2 leukemia back in 2013. since then, police say several benefits have been held in her honor raising $14,000. >> there were some inconsistencies such as, um, miss gates's hair was always there and never falling out. um, she did not know the name of her doctors and other things like that. >> reporter: stock says he tried to contact her doctors in places brandi said she was

treated for her cancer. >> it was discovered that she had never received any type of treatment at any of the locations. >> reporter: stock says it was an elaborate plant. weaver-gates shaved her head and even took long trips for fake treatments tricking her own sister. >> her sister would have to stay on the first floor while miss weaver-gates would go up to the second floor and allegedly receive her cancer treatments. anywhere between six to eight hours then she would emerge from the elevator. >> reporter: authorities caught on thanks to an anonymous tip. >> there's many people out that, you know, have family, friends, neighbors, that are affected with some form of cancer. and unfortunately, you have people out there who take advantage of that. >> and weaver-gates is being held on $150,000 bail. investigators are asking people who made donations to come forward. live look at the big board. the market suffering another day of losses. it was down well over 100 points but has rebounded a bit down a little more than 30 right now. we asked kcbs radio's

financial reporter jason brooks what's happening on wall street. >> china is once again weighing on u.s. stocks. beijing is taking a number of moves to try and revive its stumbling stock market and boost its weakening economy. this includes deval ewing the wun its currency two straight days. this is after a number of other moves. what i de-valuing the currency will help businesses overseas it has a direct impact on u.s. businesses in china. their goods and services will be more expensive. apple saw its stock on tuesday, for instance, plummet by 5%. apple's iphone sales to china over the past year having absolutely booming leading to record profits. analysts say the key with china is long term. so long as the country does continue to improve, it will be a good place for u.s. businesses but in the short term, it could be a rocky ride. >> thank you, jason. google stock is sliding today after big gains this week spurred by its alphabet announcement. meanwhile, apple is helping a small company with its latest

invention. looks cool, too. nivea makes a water conserving showerhead. apple's ceo tim cook is one of the first investors. the company's showerheads have been installed at apple's corporate campus. nivea is based in san francisco. bombs away! >> take a look at this. this is a fun way to help deal with the drought. thousands of black plastic balls dumped into a los angeles rest sea. the experts' theory on these plastic shade balls they float on the waters's surface, therefore reducing the amount of water that evaporates. the balls cost 36 cents apiece and are expected to last a decade. or roberta could do a little rain dance. >> let's check my favorite buddies my weather watchers because they can see what i can't see around the microclimates. we have several people

san francisco, and where we have the university of california at berkeley. lawrence hall of science reporting nothing but sunshine. the marine layer has cleared out. we are going to have close to normal temperatures. this is the area of low pressure. this has been so incredible to watch over the past couple of days because it's spinning its wheels off the coast about 200 miles off the coast and it does have rain associated with the front. the problem is rain showers dries up once it hits our air mass so what we have is the recipient of coolers temperatures associated with the low now ejecting to the north. high pressure is building in from the desert southwest. end result, we're going to see a warming trend by the end of the workweek. meanwhile, we are in the 80s going up to 90 in sacramento. 73 the forecast high in monterey bay. 86 in ukiah. sunset at 8:06. tomorrow morning in the 50s and 60s. meanwhile our daytime highs 70 in pacifica. 70s across the bay today.

i don't know if i want to see this. she is thought to be the biggest great white shark ever filmed. >> the latest video of her is going viral. so let's take a peek. her name is deep blue. and this video was captured, wow, by a researcher.

>> whoa, she is big. >> she is. he posted the clip on a facebook page on monday. it's already gotten nearly 2 million views. the discovery channel says the shark is about 20 feet long and 50 years old. they believe she was pregnant when they shot this video. >> i would be an appetizer for her. she wouldn't like me. >> quick. crowds back at coast guard island in alameda for a special home coming. the cutter stratton returned home after four months at sea. family and friends greeted the crew with hugs and smiles. the ship was on drug patrol in the eastern pacific ocean near central and south america. on monday in san diego, stratton conducted one of the largest known cocaine off-loads in coast guard history. the drugs are estimated to be worth more than $1 billion. >> we have a great crew on here and the crew is where it all starts. we have fantastic bunch of folks that do everything they are asked and work hard and they are highly trained. this ship the stratton is one of the coast guard's newest assets. it was just commissioned three
