>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> there was so much smoke over the bay area today, people started calling 911 about it. tonight, we know where it is coming from. but how long will it hang around? i'm maria medina. >> and i'm brian hackney. kpix5's christian hartnett is live on treasure island tonight where we have a clear view of the san francisco skyline from here right now. but earlier today, clear views were hard to come by. >> reporter: we have absolutely perfectly crystal clear view of the san francisco skyline right now. but as you said brian, earlier today, clear views were hard to come by. nope. that is definitely not fog. >> the smoke came in like real early this morning. you could see it and smell it. >> reporter: that barbecue

smell across the bay area today was not your neighbor cooking up something on the grill. smoke from wild fires as far north as the oregon border has made its way down south. the smoke from up north is putting a haze over what is normally a clear view across the bay. >> today, we are seeing some impact. it is being drawn down through the valley areas into the bay area. >> reporter: ralph of the bay area quality management district says the smoke and a combination of low winds and hot weather are raising air quality flags. still, many people enjoyed the hot summer day, though some took precautions. >> people suffering from asthma, they are definitely taking it easy for today. >> reporter: a spare the air day is on tap for tomorrow. the smoggy views here to stay for now. >> so if you can put that off a day or just until evening that is always a good thing to do. >> reporter: and the bay area

quality management district says this could continue into next week. christian hartnett, kpix5. >> all this is driven by high pressure inland and to the west creating light offshore winds driving the smoke south from trinity county and pulling it through the strait and out into the bay area. and it was hot who and how. there are heat advisories posted through 9:00 tomorrow night for the entire bay area. numbers will exceed 100 inland sunday. today, we hit 101 in livermore. 97 in santa rosa. 96 in redwood city. and we don't get much of a break tomorrow. at the same time, another fire has shut down a portion of tayoga pass. the walker fire has taken a turn toward yosemite. highway 120 is closed. and some campgrounds in the area are being evacuated tonight. as for the 25,000-acre jerusalem fire that started last sunday in lake county, it

80% contained and all evacuation orders are lifted. the rocky fire is 100% contained. an armed man the on the loose in sunnyvale tonight and another is dead after being shot by police. this is where officers called off the search a few minutes ago. you can see police officers still on the scene there. they have gone door to door since 4:00 p.m. that is when the whole thing started with a call of suspicious activity in a car. police were called to motel six not far from highway 101. two men got out, started running when they saw officers roll up, police say one of the suspects dropped an ammo clip in the street. as he ran around a corner behind some businesses, officers followed. what happened next is not clear but the man was shot and killed by police. they found a gun next to his body and another in his backpack. a witness reported another man carrying a gun as he jumped a fence and headed for mom. >> we don't know why he is running for us. that is part of the investigation as we go along.

we don't know the circumstances of why they ran from the officers but yes, anybody that is carrying a weapon is very dangerous. >> no officers were hurt. police are staying tight-lipped about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. they are also not giving specifics about what the suspects were doing at that motel. thousands of people in vallejo had to spend this sweltering day without water. all because of a pipe that burst. this is the area east of broadway that is still affected tonight. mark kelly shows us it has been a rough saturday for homeowners there. >> reporter: this is what thousands in vallejo woke up to on their saturday morning. faucets barely spitting out water. >> terrible. not to have water? >> reporter: gina has been driving to her office to get water because there is not a drop at her house. >> all my dishes are not washed. my toilet is not flushed. i haven't taken a bath. it's bad without water. >> reporter: the large 20-inch

pipe burst friday night under these train tracks. workers say the pipe is old, but no idea what the exact cause could be. some of that water made its way into the parking lot of this office building where david ellison works. >> he says it didn't get inside the building so we got lucky there. >> reporter: the city says if you have running water, it is safe to drink. but for safety reasons, they still want everyone conserving. >> should do your best to refrain from using water to keep positive pressure on the line so the water does stay safe to drink. >> reporter: for those completely without water, vallejo is trucking in extra. they are warning it could be early sunday morning until the water is flowing like it should. >> that's a lot less than it should be. >> reporter: in vallejo, mark kelly, kpix5. >> well, it will be sunday morning. the city expects the repairs to be done soon. water service should be fully restored by 4:00 a.m. half a dozen people are recovering after a wild police

chase through downtown la. it started this morning when an officer tried pulling a driver over for running a red light. but they say he just kept going flying through another red light straight into a woman and her 13-year-old daughter. the suspect didn't stop there though. police say he continued on until he crashed into a sedan carrying a family of four. >> the driver ... he got off on the car. he tried to escape. the officer from the motorcycle jumped off his bike and threw him on the floor. >> and police say none of the injuries are life-threatening. the suspect was taken away on a stretcher. he is facing felony hit and run charges. they are not sure why he ran. tax proposals are going to ignite some hot debates. the proposals would raise the gas tax as well as the tobacco tax. the gas tax would pay for the roads and the tobacco would fund healthcare for the poor. in order for either proposal to

move forward, they would require support from two-thirds of lawmakers in both houses. the front runners for president brought their campaigns to iowa today. wendy gillette wraps up their day at the state fair. >> reporter: donald trump arrived in style at the iowa state fair and took questions. he criticized his fellow republican candidate jeb bush for a comment he made friday about isis and what the u.s. need to do in iraq to control the terror group. >> jeb bush is a puppet to his donors. i think it may be one of the dumbest statements i have ever heard. >> reporter: trump promised to unveil his first policy proposal and outline his plans for immigration and he addressed the e-mail controversy enveloping hillary clinton. >> she has a lot of problems with the e-mail situation. that's a big problem.

dangerous chemicals including sodium cyanide, a deadly substance that becomes combustible on contact with water. it is believed firefighters may have triggered the blast after responding to a small fire at the warehouse and dousing the flames. tensions flared as families demanded answers outside a government meeting. i haven't had any contact with my son said this father of a firefighter. more than 100 people killed, many of them firemen. there are miracles among the rubble. this man was found alive today after spending three days clinging to a pole inside a shipping container. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. >> state run media is reporting the warehouse was storing more than 700 tons of sodium cyanide. that is 70 times more than it should have been holding. a tennessee teen thought he wasn't going to make it but he literally pulled a miracle out of his back pocket when siri came to the rescue.

nsa contractor edward snowden. the paper says starting in 2003, the telecom giant helped the nsa with wiretapping the internet communications of the u.n. it is the first few months of the operation the nsa got its hands on 400 billion internet meta data records. it was not a good day to fly anywhere near the east coast after a computer glitch caused thousands of cancellations. the center control's high altitude air space for all three washington dc area airports, flights had to detour around the area for hours. >> i'm staying in an airport that i dope know in a place i don't know. ly be there all night. until the next flight in the morning. i'm not happy. i'm very upset. >> well tonight, the problem has been resolved and the flight backlog is slowly clearing.

the faa is still looking into the cause of that glitch. a florida woman coaches a little girl to shoplift and it is all caught on tape. it happened tuesday night. surveillance video captured the woman pointing out a bottle of tequila to the little girl. the girl tries to grab a big bottle and she opts for a smaller one. puts it behind her back. while the woman distracts the clerk, the girl sidesteps out of the door with the bottle and take a look. she runs to a car. police are looking for that woman tonight and want to make sure that little girl is protected. an idaho man got the surprise of his life when he heard some scratching at his door. take a look. he assumed it was just the cat coming in through the pet door. then, a snout appeared. suddenly, he was face to face with a huge black bear. took a picture. and it may not be its first visit. the man thinks it's the same bear that broke into his place last week, ate some of his
