good evening, i'm juliette goodrich it was a scorching hot day r the entire bay area.with so regions reaching triple digs and smashing records. another week and little relief from the extreme heat and unhealthy hair. good evening. it was a scorching hot day for the entire bay area. for some reaching triple digits. we were out in it. the smoke and it was nasty out there. >> that is right. >> reporter: not only the warmest day this year but the air quality was terrible thanks to outside influence. i know californians are spoiled but it is hard not to complain

in heat like this. >> i am sweating. >> yes. running from store to store to keep cool. >> reporter: triple digits and even 90 degree weather that broke a 65-year-old record. it was not all sunshine and clear skies. our meteorologist explains. >> double high driving smoke from trinity county fires, trapping collusion and snapping records for the second day if a row, hitting record high temperatures, 103 in concord, 104 in livermore. >> reporter: smoking skies prompted a bay area quality management district to call for a spare the air day. horrible air quality and the heat, bad combination. >> i noticed the smell. i am aware it is not good for your lungs. >> a friend put a facebook post

saying it smells like a -- well, smalls bad, in different words. [ laughter ] >> reporter: researchers are saying the pollution is off setting u.s. efforts in recent years to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, back to you. the heat is mothering southern california as well. helping to fuel three more wildfires burning tonight near los angeles. this fire charred 500 acres at least three buildings. many structures were abandoned. burning in rugged terrain and the firefighters are dealing with gusting winds and high temperatures. two people have been detained in connection with this fire. cbs reporter carter evans says it is not just california struggling to control with a fire season.

>> reporter: ravaged by wildfires all sudden, now a wind shift made things worse. burning for several days, this in seattle in chelan. >> everything is on fire. that whole hillside there, this whole hillside was on fire last night. it was nuts. >> reporter: this is how the fire looked from lake chelan. a popular recreational spot. so far one00 structures burned. hundreds more threatened. in oregon crews are battling several out of control wildfires, one of them burned more than 86 square miles, adams is one of hundreds of evacuees. >> by the time we got in the car, the fire was in the backyard. we barely made it out. >> reporter: so far wildfires burned more than 6.5 million acres. more than 2-1/2 times what

a nearly one month manhunt ended east of bakersfield. a man died in confrontation with the sheriff deputies. he came in and spent $100 on water and junk food. >> just came in and got food and what not and seemed like a guy that was on the newspapers. >> he is suspected of killing a dentist and getting into a shootout with a s.w.a.t. team that left 2 officers wounded. the deputies found 4 guns after they shot him.

the investigators say they are worried their could be more victims. east bay driver facing charges tonight of hitting a chp officer trying to flee. they were are trying to pull them over because a passenger was hanging out of the window. this is video. posted on youtube. the driver tried to escape on 880 and got off of there and spun out. they said that is when the driver decided to ram his cruiser. he was caught blocks away. the police are piecing together details of a fatal hit and run. a pedestrian was found wedged under a pick up truck last night. the police think the victim got into an argument with the driver and stabbed him. the driver allegedly ran him down and killed him. the driver showed up at the hospital with stab wounds. he has been arrested. next generation of tech

north bay, a few more low clouds, as a result, the temperatures will be in the middle 80s in the warmer spots, 93 in santa rosa. and, up by clear lakes, still, plenty hot, going at 100 degrees down to clover dale. extended forecast, a warm one tomorrow. not quite as warm and significant cooling along the shoreline. then tuesday, wednesday, thursday. it will be in the middle 80s inland, 70s around the bay and a return to what has passed for formal in the bay area. just not lately. have a good monday. i will see you tomorrow morning. last call for a landmark bay area roller coaster. why the thrill ride means so much to this local couple. and a robber tried to rip off a clerk with a machete. what the clerk had that had the robber running out the door.

hot weekends like this one, heavy traffic used to paralyze the area. but, as mark kelly shows us a few orange cones can keep the cars in line. >> reporter: charlie knows how easily weekend drivers take over the streets. >> saturday and sunday during the summer it is -- it can take 15 minutes through here. >> reporter: but today felt different. >> yes. today it is better. >> reporter: much of the credit goes to the orange cones and big bold signs telling drivers to stay off of the side streets. >> what difference has the cones made? >> keeping them over there. >> reporter: the folks that live here love the cones, giving back their quiet residential street. to give you an idea how bad traffic got. we were here a few weeks ago
