>> the bay area jolted awake by a 4.0 quake. good afternoon, i'm maria medina. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. the magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck at 6:49 this morning. one mile north of the piedmont, at the center was along the hayward fault. the quake registered on our seismograph here at kpix 5, people reported feeling it across the east bay in san francisco, we did. more rain county and on parts of the peninsula as well. >> we have live team coverage. kiet do is live at the usgs in menlo park, cate cauguiran is the pep center in piedmont -- epicenter in piedmont. >> reporter: that exact location right next to me. everyone is sleeping in the homes in this area got an early wake up call. >> having is across the street was pretty shocking. >> reporter: kurt made sure to set an alarm to wake up. he said the hayward faults helped him out. >> you didn't need the alarm

this morning. >> reporter: didn't need the alarm. the epicenter feet from his house. >> it was a strong jolt. >> reporter: the quake was felt all over the bay area. the security camera caught these guys enjoying their sleep when the first shock came, and then the next. in this video, you see a startled bane after a quake shook the room. >> is that an earthquake i just felt. >> i don't think so. >> i think it was. >> reporter: in san francisco, radio host fernando and greg were mid broadcast when they felt the quake. >> what do you do, i grew up in texas. >> reporter: in berkeley. >> i was shaking, like wobbly. >> reporter: most people shelter under tables, these guys decided to get in their car. >> we decided just to check the place out. >> reporter: looking around, there was no visible damage. we checked with several markets and it was the same story with the exception of a safeway in montclair, the only casualty was a bottle of wine. after the quake hit, b.a.r.t.

went to work checking traps on the system. trains slowed down so operators could make a visual inspection. hundreds of people took to twitter to tweet about the quake. pierre moore tweeted bay area there's our 6:50 alarm clock, hash tag earthquake. karen had this to say, in rock ridge, the earthquake woke me up and knocked boots off my shelf, hash tag piedmont quake. >> and he tweeted, whoa, earthquake in san francisco, hash tag earthquake, and another woman found humor in the situation tweeting, earth letting us know who's boss in oakland. looks like a 4.2 felt bigger, hash tag piedmont quake. >> and this morning's quake happened in the middle of our morning newscast. woke me up. >> sure did. our political analyst melissa griffin-caen was wrapping up a segment. >> prohibits us from flying

over private property. looks like we may have just experienced an earthquake. did you feel that melissa. it was an earthquake. >> definitely an earthquake, and we're going to work with our producers to try to figure out how strong that earthquake was. a little bit of a jolt here, two jolts actually. first one caught me by surprise. >> i have been in the studio when we had an earthquake in 2011, and the entire desk shakes a little bit. you felt it as well. >> i certainly did. i can't wait to explain this to my mom and alabama that i was standing here while an earthquake was happening. >> and really the desk did shake quite a bit. >> oh, it d and you can feel it just like that. we both kind of looked and melissa was in the middle of her piece, and she paused and looked at each other, collect your thoughts like many folks out there. not just our radio partners here at the cbs broadcast studios, they felt the jolt. >> and here's how it played out

on allison's morning show >> feel that? oh, wow s that an earthquake. >> oh, geez,. >> yeah, we felt it. >> that was a big one. >> get us some information on that. 6:49:00 a.m. where we are, that was a 4, 3? >> yeah, well, it was a 4. nice work by sarah there who nailed the magnitude right out of the gate. the reason so many people felt it is because the quake was centered along the hayward fault. that's the one that runs the length of the east bay. kpix5 reporter kiet do is live in menlo park at the usgs with more on the science behind the quake. >> this was a pretty typical earthquake. they have counted about a half dozen of these of the same magnitude on the hayward fault since 1984. the agency says this is a great time to talk about preparing for the big one.

the usgs says it was a classic textbook quake that happens once every couple of years. three miles below the surface, it was shallow. >> that means people nearby probably felt more intense shaking than they normally would. >> the last one happened in 1868. the agency says a big one comes around once every 150 years or so. >> add 10 if 1868, it wouldn't surprise those of us who know about this, if we had a big earthquake sometime in the near future. >> reporter: scientists will be using data to refine instruments. >> our future shaking that goes into the national seismic hazard map which are used by the building code. >> reporter: the earthquake hit at the end of the morning newscast, and neither frank, maria nor melissa ducked under the desk. >> shame on them, right. >> they were playing the odds, you know, small jolt, is it

over or is that the beginning. you never know. >> reporter: all you guys in the studio have a chance to redeem yourself with the great california shake out earthquake drill that is happening on october 15th at 10:15 in the morning. basically 10:15. you can register at shake out.org. we're live in menlo park, kiet do, catch miami. >> i did look up -- kpix 5. >> i did look up to make sure nothing was tumbling down. another good reminder to make sure you're prepared for the next one. we have an entire section on our web site. the u.s. army could be sending in troops to fight raging wildfires across the state. california leaders are asking the pentagon for help, sake the state has exhausted fire fighting resources. the plan would be for 200 active duty soldiers to hit the

fire line. pentagon correspondent david martin tells us the request is working its way through official challenges and is likely to be approved later today. meantime in california, there are 18 wildfires burning right now. the jerusalem fire in lake county is 90% contained. all evacuation orders have been lifted. 9 homes have been lost in the fire. just east of yosemite, crews are still working to contain the walker fire. it's burning within a mile of cuyahoga path. forcing the closure of 1230 -- 120, and blocking access of the park. residents of nearby lee vining have been warned they may have to be evacuated. and the smoke from northern california wildfires is creating hazy skies. the poor air quality has prompted a spare the air today, and brian hackney tells us we're not done just yet with triple digit. >> in case you missed it

yesterday, it was hot with temperatures in the bay area well above 100 degrees in the warmer locations. livermore, 106. and santa rosa 104. the good news is temperatures at this hour are running 3 to 10 degrees cooler than they were yesterday because of fog and low clouds building up along the shoreline. san francisco has up ticked a notch from 67 to 68 right now. concord, 87. pretty warm inland, not as warm as yesterday. fairfield, we get to a hundred degrees. livermore cools to a hundred, and napa just 90 degrees. there's haze today, but a lot of haze is because of the marine layer, hanging around the bay area as we see breezes scrubbing the smoke out of the bay in the next 24 hours. that's good news. there is a spare the air day today. we'll have all the detales when we -- details when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. a deadly police shooting in san jose. the man officers shot and killed was a suspect in a homicide. last week, the mercury news reports officers were

investigating a shooting death of christopher max well who was found dead at an office complex on lundy avenue that confronted a suspect at a strip mall near capital expressway around ten last night. when the man reached for his handgun, the officer fired several rounds killing the suspect. it was the second deadly police shooting in san jose this month. sunnyvale police released details about a fatal police shooting over the weekend. police responded to a report of suspicious activity, possibly involving prostitution at a motel six and when they arrived, they found three male suspects in a jaguar in a motel parking lot. as officers approached, two of the men started running. officers say one of them pointed a gun, and they opened fire. >> it's undetermined right now whether the suspect actually fired any rounds. >> police say they found two guns near the dead man. he has not been identified. the man who got away is 19-year-

old scene brown. brown has an outstanding warrant in fresno county in connection with a homicide. police believe he's pled the sunnyvale area. police arrested the other man, raymond hack et jr., booked santa clara jail. he has a $50,000 warrant for domestic violence charges. thee people are dead after a fiery crash in el sebrante. acamaro sideswiped another car and burst into flames . the driver escaped but the passengers were killed. investigators believe alcohol played a role in the crash. a deadly explosion rocking thailand, the rush hour attack at a popular tourist shrine. and from campaigns, to and from campaigns, to court, donald trump ta,,,,

. developing news explosion at a tourist landmark left more than a dozen dead at bangkok thailand. the bomb wounded nearly a hundred people, including four foreigners. investigators found a second undetonated bomb outside the shrine. new video from china showing the explosions that killed dozens there. the bright flash occurred at an apartment killing more than a hundred people. last wednesday. today about a hundred people whose homes were damaged demanded compensation from the chinese government. they say the warehouse where the explosions happened was too close to their homes. and searchers have spotted the wreckage of a passenger plane in indonesia, but it could take a while for crews to get to the remote area. residents of a nearby village told local police they saw the

plane fly low before it crashed into the mountains yesterday. among the 54 people on board, four postal workers carrying nearly a half million dollars, $4 million, rather, of government money for poor families to offset a spike in fuel prices. gop front runner, donald trump is starting to give details about he would lead the country, but as craig boswell reports, first he's taking time for jury duty in new york city. >> donald trump is taking time off to perform his civic duty. he arrived at a lower manhattan courthouse for jury duty. this past weekend, trump gave specifics about one of his biggest issues, immigration. as president, trump says he would triple the number of immigration officers. build a wall along the mexican border and strip the citizenship of people born in the u.s. to parents who are here illegally. >> it appeals to people who have the harshest ideas about

immigration in america. people who found that appealing, he has policy that backs up the rhetoric. >> the latest national polls show trump far ahead of the field with 25 percent of respondents backing him. another of other candidates are on the rise, including ben carson, ted cruz, mike huckabee, and carly fiorina. jeb bush has been losing place in the polls. the ads will begin airing in early voting states such as iowa and new hampshire in mid september and will run through december. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. >> and the fox news poll shows hillary clinton leading with 49 percent support followed by bernie sanders with 30%. vice president joe boyden may consider -- biden may consider entering the race with 10% support. two plague infected

of warming as we head into the weekend. no big deal. air quality for today, it's a spare the air day. particlates in the north -- particulates in the north bay, and as you can see, as per usual after a couple of days of intense heat we've got low clouds to the rescue. their packing in along the shoreline, and that's going to bring temperatures down along the coast, and as we pointed out, they are 3 to 8 degrees cooler inland at this hour. it will be hot but not as hot as it was yesterday. still we're looking over a layer of phase from mount vaca. smoky and hot inland today. not as bad as over the weekend. cooler by the shore loin, and near average by midweek. so the forecast today shows temperatures still above average, 75 degrees in san francisco. yesterday, san francisco was at 90 degrees by noon. that set a record that broke a

1950 record. in concord, 98 today. san jose, 89 and oakland 83. down in the south bay, plenty of sunshine. 95 degrees at sunnyvale. 97 for morgan hill. in the east bay, 100 at antioch, and fairfield, and livermore, and walnut creek, still 5 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. high temperatures in the north bay today, 93 in santa rosa, 103 at lake port, and 102 degrees at clear lake. extended forecast will bring the numbers down inland tomorrow, and wednesday, thursday and friday, we're back to fog and low clouds in the morning, clearing in the afternoon. it's back to a more normal regime. >> when you say 90 as kind of cool,. >> exactly that where we are. >> thanks brian. let's take a look at the big board right now. let's see. oh, down in the beginning, but up now 50 points, almost 51 points. we'll take it. good news. keep your hands, armed and dump
