they are being called heroes and tonight what we know about the three buddies who prevented what could have been a deadly terror attack on a crowded train. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. tonight, one of the americans who helped stop a terrorist attack on a high-speed train is out of the hospital. spencer stone was injured while tackling the gunman who pulled out a box cutter and slashed him. president obama called spencer today along with the two other americans to thank them for their courage and we are getting a better idea how the terrifying chain of events happened on the train and who the men from northern california are who stopped the

attack. those men are sharing just how close a call it was. kpix 5's mark kelly with their accounts of what went down. >> reporter: these are the moments just after passengers scared for their lives took down the suspected gunman before he could kill. take a look. the suspect face down on the train, hands and feet tied. >> he went unconscious, i think. >> reporter: these three men tonight heroes, helped stop the shooter from left to right americans anthony sadler from pittsburg and now a senior at sacramento state. alek skarlatos who served in afghanistan plus british businessman chris norman who jumped in to help american spencer stone tie down the gunman. >> he cut spencer behind the neck. he nearly cut his thumb off. spencer held him and we eventually got him under control. >> reporter: stone, an air force serviceman also from sacramento, was seen here leaving the hospital for a hand injury having been the first to risk his life and tackle the gunman. >> reporter: if anybody would

have gotten shot it would have been spencer. >> reporter: the three americans, friends, were enjoying a summer trip in europe when a gunshot rang out on their train ride from amsterdam to paris. spencer tackled the suspect and alek wrestled the gun away. the mothers are grateful their sons will be coming home alive. >> when i talked to spencerrer, said i would have been killed if it wasn't for alek. >> i talked to alek and he said the same thing. if it wasn't for spencer i'd be dead. >> reporter: friend investigators haven't confirmed the suspect identity but he is believed to be a 26-year-old moroccan with ties to radical islam. he can be held for 96 hours. mark kelly, kpix 5. >> a facebook page is set up to pay tribute to the three americans. the person who created it said

this page is about these three guys restoring my faith in humanity. the page picked up over 1,000 likes in just a few hours. a horrific scene just outside london. a military jet taking part in an airshow crashes into a number of cars on a busy road. the jet was performing a stunt when something went wrong. it slammed into the ground creating a fireball. 7 people were killed on the road. more bodies could be found in the coming hours. 14 people are being treated for injuries including the pilot who is in critical condition. a new faa report just out details how often drones cause problems for airplanes. kpix 5's da lin honda in on the close calls in the bay area. reporter: in the bay area we found at least 32 reports of close calls in the past nine months. most in the south bay including

15 at mineta san jose but no part of the bay area was spared. there were four at sfo and one in oakland. chopper 5 is based at hayward airport, where we spoke with the pilot. >> definitely it's just a matter of time before something happens. we're going to have devastation and mass casualties. >> reporter: in february, the pilot of a federal express boeing 767 flying 11,000 feet over san jose saw a drone shaped like an [ indiscernible ] 60 feet near him. in april the pilot of a small plane passed within four feet of his left wing as he landed in hayward. in june the pilot of a southwest 737 landing in oakland reported a large 5-foot drone came pretty close. and in july, a small plane with a student pilot had to take evasive action to avoid a drone over palo alto. >> you have to do an aggressive move to get away from him. now you're putting your passengers in danger. >> reporter: before last year, close calls with drones were

unheard of. the pilots say drones are becoming more popular because of the lower prices and ease of use. >> i'm extremely worried about it. >> reporter: da lin, kpix 5. >> drones have also interfered with at least a dozen firefighting planes over california this season. just this week, the governor's office of emergency services made a tip line to report reckless drone use. donald trump has a new target in his battle over immigration. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg. trump wants to curb the work visa program that has helped bring thousands of engineers to silicon valley. zuckerberg is part of a group of executives who want to increase the number of work permits. he is calling fellow gop candidate rubio his personal senator. rubio has a bill that would increase the number of work visa. facebook hasn't responded to the comments. it's chris christie's turn to take the soapbox at the iowa

state fair. the republican presidential candidate laid out a four-point immigration plan, he wants to build a wall and increase the number of agents on patrol. he also wants to use drones to help the agents and he wants every u.s. business to use an electronic verification system. >> folks coming across the border is the worst and if they know you cannot be employed in this country if you are not here legally then they won't come because they are only coming for a job. >> he wants to fine companies double the profits for hiring illegal immigrants. a drop in the polls has hillary clinton concerned. so she is shortening her vacation to return to the campaign trail. she is currently in new york but will end it in the middle of the week. plans will take the former secretary of state to key states in the midwest. she will also address the democratic national committee during its summer meeting in minnesota. vice president joe biden

held a secret meeting today with elizabeth warren. biden has been considering a run for president and had been pondering a decision in delaware. he returned to dc today to consult with the massachusetts senator. warren, who was expected to be in the democratic mix, has ruled out a run for the white house. biden's advisers have told him he needs to make a decision by october 1. tonight warning signs are up at public beaches along the russian river. the worry is over toxic algae. small amounts of blue-green algae have been detected and that can make you sick. the low river level from the drought and warm temperatures are causing rapid blooms and experts say that if you do go in the water, make sure you shower immediately. it's hell on earth and it won't stop. >> fire in all directions. thousands ordered to evacuate. how those who refuse to leave are taking matters into their own hands. >> panda mania at the national zoo. what happened today that had this giant panda tossing and this giant panda tossing and turning from side to side. ,,

force. the blast killed 12 people in kabul and wounded 66. the taliban has denied responsibility for the attack. it is still unclear who was behind it. wildfires continue to race across the state of washington tonight. firefighters are doing everything they can to hold back the flames. and as chris martinez tells us now some homeowners are joining the fight. >> reporter: nearly a dozen fires are consuming thousands of acres north of seattle. megan can't believe what's happening to the town, fires in all directions. >> it's hell on earth and won't stop. >> reporter: thousands have been ordered to evacuate. but some homeowners refe to go. these brothers are trying to beat back the flames from reaching their grandparents' home. >> there would be no way to leave without trying. i mean, grandparents's house, got to try to save it. >> they have been told to evacuate so many times and they

won't go. everybody fights. >> because this is home? >> yeah. [ crying ] >> yes. >> reporter: for the first time, in the state's history, washington officials are asking for volunteers to help fight the fires. already more than 3,000 people have offered to help. thousands of firefighters remain on the front lines. phillip ridgely is leading a team from oregon. >> this is my country. and i'm proud to be a part of what's going on here helping people. helping homes throughout the whole country. >> reporter: 200 active duty soldiers are expected to join the fight over the weekend along with a team of firefighters from australia and new zealand. chris martinez, cbs news, washington state. >> firefighters are gaining ground on the walker fire in yosemite. the flames are 60% contained. the highway 120 at tioga pass is reopened. campers who were evacuated can now go back in.

cal fire says 3600 acres have burned in the walker fire. a newborn in the nation's capital, mei xiang the giant panda at zoo gave birth to a cub this afternoon. zoo keepers were monitoring the labor on surveillance video. giant pandas are one of the world's most endanger animals. this is mei xiang's third cub. the panda family has so many fans the live webcam monitoring her labor went down today because of high traffic. a new way to set the mood and more. coming up, the new bulb you operate from your smartphone that does more than shed light. >> a lot going on in the bay area this weekend. area this weekend. we'll have the ,,,,
