>> live, from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. >> they just can't catch a break in lake county tonight, another wild fire is spreading dangerously fast across the bone dry landscape. i'm brian hackney. >> i'm juliette goodrich. this one is called the peterson fire. it erupted late this afternoon near the town of kelseyville on the west side of clear lake. the flames have raced across at least 400 acres since then. cal fire has called in three helicopters. seven air tankers an more than 200 firefighters to get control of it before it can spread to nearby neighborhoods. so far, no evacuations have been ordered, but people who

live in the area are understandably nervous. >> very concerned, upset, and wondering what is going on. it is really pretty pathetic and sad. there have been three huge fires lately. and yeah. it is scary for people's property, the animals. very concerned. >> no word yet on the cause of the fire, so far, no structures have been damaged and no injuries reported. but, the fire is 0% contained. >> a quick check at the weather conditions near the fire. light winds at this hour. tomorrow, the temperature will reach 92 degrees. winds will gust to near 20 miles an hour. good news, the jerusalem fire is almost 100% contained. all evacuations have been lifted and the tesla fire east of livermore is 95% contained

tonight. it destroyed one abandoned buildings. so many wild fieres have burned across california this summer that agencies across the state are running thin on resources. tonight, about 12,000 firefighters are on the front lines of 17 separate fires. they are being called in from all over the the state and fire agencies have to be ultra efficient. >> so we are going to take car of our homes, our customers here in the communities. there are times when we would maximize the personnel department. >> many agencies have limits ton number of people they can send out. alameda has 17 firefighters dispatched across the state and their limit is 30. a northern california man who took down a possible terrorist on terrorist bound train is out of the hospital tonight. the gunman sliced into spencer stone's hand with a box cutter

nearly cutting off his thumb. stone and two of his childhood friends are credited with taking the man down with the help of a british passenger. the others got a heroic sendoff. stone is from the sacramento area and was on leave from the air force. reporter lemore abrams spoke with his brother tonight. >> he pretty much sums up what it mean to be a warrior. >> reporter: everett stone is spencer stone's big brother. both of them from fair oaks. everett says his little brother is now his hero for risking his own life to take down a suspected terrorist on a train to paris. >> he should not be alive add all. he saved every single person's life in that train. >> reporter: he say ins cell phone video shows spencer bleeding heavily after the attacker stabbed him in the back with a box cutter. slashed his finger and hit him over the head with an assault

rifle. he says spencer is a medic in the u.s. air force. a usually laid back guy vacationing in europe with his friends from sacramento when the three turned into global heros. spencer's neighbor is a national guards man just back from afghanistan. when he got out, alek skarlatos yelled two famous words. let's go. >> and i said basically, let's go, told him to go and he went. spencer ran a good ten meter to get to the guy. spencer just ran anyway. >> reporter: alek skarlatos says spencer grabbed the suspect's neck. that is when he and sadler snatched the gun, hog tied the man and beat him unconscious but spencer deserves the credit not only for going in first, but saveing the life of the man

shot in the neck. >> he went to go help the other man who was bleeding also. without his help, he would have died. that man was bleeding from his neck profusely. >> reporter: for spencer's brother, the story is even more chilling given what he knows about his brother. he recall it is conversation he had with him during 9 closure 11. >> we just discussed, you know, a lot of people just sit back. if somebody were to happen like that, we weren't going to sit down and take it. and he did exactly what we said he would do. >> the three americans are receiving praise from all over the country tonight. president obama personally called to thank them. and defense secretary ash carter said in a statement airman stone and specialist alek skarlatos are reasons why on due and and off, ours is the

finest fighting force the world has ever known. the gunman was a 26-year-old from morocco on several terror lists. his mote sieve still unclear tonight. back in the bay area, the 49ers are switching things up on the field ahead of their own preseason game. they replaced the turf again after music fans tore it up at the taylor swift concert. so a fresh field is in place. but as christian hartnett tells us, the cowboys are not taking any chances. christian? >> reporter: well brian, that is right. ever since last season when the stadium opened last year, the issues have been absolutely nonstop. the team is hoping to change that this year. their opponent tomorrow isn't taking any chances with injury. it is the big green problem. truckloads of expensive sod have a very short life span

here. the 49ers are hoping the resilience will be better. the switchover comes eight days after taylor swift brought her world tour to levi. the sod needed replacing after it took a beating from fans. field crews laid down the fresh grass in preparation for the dallas cowboys. but the cowboys are not taking any chances. they have expressed concern about injury risk and key players may sit this game out as a precaution. the field has not exactly had good reviews from the 49ers either. just two weeks ago, a public practice was canceled because of issues with the grass. next week, there will be a luke bryan concert here at the stadium. the field will need to be resodded after that. and then again, before the season opener here at the stadium on september 14.

christian hartnett, kpix5. >> kpix5 is your home for precoverage football. an armed man who tried to give police the slip on the bay bridge could not outrun the coast guard. he tried to run off on foot. the coast guard dispatched boats to search the water but he stayed on land. they found him on a rock on yerba buena island and arrested him. last week, a woman pulled off a daring escape. she jumped over the bike path railing as officers approached. she apparently survived the 70- foot fall and swam to shore. a trucker picked her up. she has not been seen since. san francisco is taking a new approach to fighting graffiti by suing the vandals to cover the costs.

hundreds watched on in sussex as the pilot successfully flipped over, but he soon began to barrel down to the ground. he began to pull up, but not fast enough. >> i just thought you are too low. pull up. >> reporter: the impact caused a massive fire ball. amazingly, officials say, the pilot survived. although he is fighting for his life at a local hospital. it is unclear if he ejected before the crash. most of the victims were just sitting in their cars at the time unaware of the threat that came from overhead. this is the second crash at an air show in england this month. it is unclear what caused today's tragic accident. there are still people missing and they expect more casualties as the search continues. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. a bizarre accident in fairfield tonight. a man was run over and killed by a world war ii era tank.

the chp says the man was sitting on the edge of the tank as it drove through an open field as the tank started down a hill, he lost his balance. investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. police in san jose are looking for a driver who hit and killed a man and drove off. the man was found at king and story roads. nobody saw the car that hit him. meanwhile, police in petaluma want you to take a look at these two. they are accused of use ago stolen credit card to buy $15,000 worth of gift cards at the target store. they may be driving a black suv. a couple of bay area men are ready to wage war with a robot that looks like it came out of a video game. yep, this 15-foot robot is called the mark 2, lit be doing battle with a robot from japan.

well to the south. a highway of fog and sea breeze moving into the bay area. there is nothing stopping the deep marine layer from coming inland in the night and early morning hours. it will happen again tomorrow. this low pressure will sink far enough south, we have the first little blast of autumn coming into the bay area. a little frost on the early, can you believe we are talking about pumpkins and all that already? it is only august. that is why we have the fog and the low clouds. typical summertime weather for the bay area. this is tomorrow morning at 0:00 o'clock. you can see we have mostly clear skies inland and in the south bay. still, there will be fog over the peninsula down to south san francisco. later in the day, it melts away. then the fog returns tomorrow night. so to sum it up, we are going to have clouds and drill along the shoreline early. it will remain mild through the week, but it does warm up to near 90 degrees on wednesday in
