5:00 am
>> hello and welcome to mosaic. i am chris weichert and i'm here to introduce you -- introduced to father john who is the vicarage administration at the archdiocese of san francisco and we will talk about the more frequently discussed and believed in and essential teachings of the catholic faith. i hope you enjoyed the show. it's a quick show because we are going to try to cover a lot of ground. want to let you know at our website sf archdiocese.org you can click an item that says what we believe to find a list of all these things should you want to follow up and you can
5:01 am
actually go to the page itself to find out more. here we go and i would like to introduce you to father john kittredge. father john, welcome >> great to be here again with you, chris. you recently have written article that will be published in the san francisco newspaper and there is a great introduction to what we are going to talk about. would you let us know the gist of it >> i just point out that in select dealers society, we get a lot of our views from secular society and they tend to follow trends. a secular culture does not necessarily mean that everybody believes it. there's always counter cultures but over time they have an influence and they can have an influence on it -- institutions which could be positive or
5:02 am
negative and i have an example that i use j think is good and it involves ice cream shops. over the past 40 or 50 years, you know if you go into on of the shots -- shops they have a lot of toppings, brownings, cookies, other sweet things that you can have and that has been the trend. you can imagine that there would be one ice cream shop who said you know we make good ice cream and that's what we want to stick to. all these 40 years so they haven't really been popular. it's a small chain and somehow they make it through and now they feel it's time to emphasize the fact that they stuck to the basis -- basics and they know this is pure good ice cream and so they rename the chain and they call it nothing but ice cream okay?
5:03 am
so it's all an emphasis on ice cream. and people care about it and they say oh, my god, that is something completely new. and yet they been doing the same thing for 40 years a lot of change task -- a lot of things have changed in society and some catholics drift away but as far as institutions, it's pretty important to let people know that the institution believes the same thing at did 40 years 400 years ago in 2000 years ago. >> great analogy. we are going to talk about some of those mean -- teams and some of the main tenets of the face for example the four marks of the church. what is the magisterium and what does it mean when we believe in the true presence of jesus in the eucharist. big topic and hell, heaven,
5:04 am
purgatory, the priesthood. people often have questions about the priesthood in life and what is our believed in life and how to live out a chaste life and all the things connected to the essential teachings of the church and how do we live them out and why do we stand up for example this past weekend 50,000 people walking down the street san francisco market street standing up for life all based on one essential issue or belief in life. we are going to be talking about some of the details of those when we come back. am chris weichert and you are watching mosaic and we will be right back.
5:05 am
5:06 am
and we started reading it before the break and the essential teachings of the church are often talked about in confused and i'm just going to read the rest of them and go back say a few words about each one. the priesthood, the police in life, chastity, what is chastity and in one state in life, contraception, homosexual acts, homosexual orientation versus ask and the call to chastity for everyone and a marriage, the institution, the sacrament, the covenant and what we believe as catholics about married in the civil law and finally reproductive technology and cloning and things like that. this is probably enough for a series of 16 shows and the four marks of the church one holy catholic and apostolic. >> i would focus on apostolic.
5:07 am
it means the bishops who are focusing as -- is that even the scriptures and their interpretation is linked to tradition and the bishops are the guarantor of that tradition and that leads us to the marriage it -- magisterium. magisterium refers to the leadership of the church and it refers to the bishop led by the holy father. and teaching oftentimes in an authoritative way. that is our teaching. it is part of the gifts given to the church. >> if you have an example of a teaching they may have gone out and declared? >> done it in the past that the immaculate conception was one.
5:08 am
they could, it would be possible to declare the sanctity of life and being against that through abortion and that is evil. to turn -- church already teaches that it has not chosen to define that infallibly. the magisterium has taught but not in an infallible white >> again this is a topic we talk about for a long time. the two presence of jesus in the eucharist. >> that means jesus is truly present by the body blood soul and divinity. i think it's enormous. i see many young people who they are really good catholics and they just don't get the understanding of the eucharist. and i think part of it is you have to deal down when you see the eucharist, you have to be focused on christ and it's the body and blood of christ and that is the ancient and current teaching of the church.
5:09 am
>> again we can read more about these things. hell and purgatory. the church has always had a hell exist. they said -- they never said anyone is in hell that the reason they don't say that is in the new testament jesus says who are you to say who is good or bad. that's god's decision alone but the reason it's so important is how means i truly have free choice and i can choose not to love god. and that's the whole point of the story. free will and purgatory. purgatory means if you're going to be in heaven you can't have all these faults. you have to be a nice guy. you can say -- purgatory is purifying us to become part of the saints in heaven.
5:10 am
>> the priesthood. >> the priesthood. people get confused. there are two types of trees. we refer to that as the ministerial priests hood. those priests serving others but there is aussie the priesthood of the lady and effective baptism right after you pour the water on the baby's head is then do the unction with the chrism and you say to the person priest prophet and king and it's the priest which is the priest of the laity which we all offer the sacrifice. it can't be done without the priest but everyone participate >> thank you. that's a good one. we talked about life but the belief of life from conception expect the church, all of this
5:11 am
is now supported by science. once you have the dna the church's position is once a woman conceives, if you do not intervene and there are no unusual events that will result in a human life. everything is programmed by god from then on this will be a human person that will develop into a baby and we have to respect that. >> let's one before the break. chastity. >> chastity applies to you and me and some confuse it with celibacy. >> a chaste person means essentially that you look at the other person as a child of god complete and just not how pretty she is or the guys handsome but this is a child of god made in an image and likeness of god and that we have all the sexual abilities
5:12 am
until it's the appropriate moment like in marriage and for someone who is single and they don't use them at all. they still whenever they interact with another man or woman all of that comes into play. >> chastity is living out the belief and dignity of treating each other with respect. we will take a break we will talk more and we are -- cruising right through the basic essential teachings of the catholic faith. you are watching mosaic. we will be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
5:15 am
kittredge. we are talking about briefly touching on the essence of some of the basic catholic teachings. we've gone through a lot, father and there is some other ones having to do with sexuality. they are often misunderstood so maybe a brief understanding and help us understand a little bit more about the concept of contraception. >> the basic notion is that a man and a woman coming together in marriage should be open to the gift of life. it is something given by god and part of the managers they are open to her. now, they can be intimate with one another at times where it is less likely that the woman will get pregnant but still even in that situation sometimes you have to be open to life. >> that's a great emphasis.
5:16 am
thank you. now here is one. homosexual acts. what the church believes about homosexual acts. >> 1st of all acts always belong in a certain context so regular heterosexual acts the church said should only occur in marriage. homosexual acts should not occur is that is not the way our bodies are made. we can easily understand a man having attraction for another man and wanting to become and suddenly intimate but just the way our bodies are built it's not possible that you can be intimate the way a couple can be in a heterosexual. our bodily -- our bodies are made male and female. >> and then of course the revelation the church and the procreative aspects of the gift of human sexuality and what we believe is catholic certainly
5:17 am
we could talk about more here. i urge you to study the theology of the body if you want to find out the more of the why many of these things. let's talk about the church's ministry and the concept of the differentiation between homosexual orientation and ask. >> the church accepts whatever orientation a person has. that orientation can be disordered and i'm going to say that a minute but the church is still accepting the person as a child of god and the full member of the church. there is no attempt to push the person outside what the church says is that you cannot act on that and of course unfortunately many of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters what they want to associate is the inclination and the attraction should be bound to action.
5:18 am
that's what they want to say and the ch,ñourch says no. we are called to chastity and that is not the inclination is quite distinct from the act itself. i want to speak so about the inclination and the church says that that is disordered. i would say for our modern society, for most young people anyway, maybe not everyone, most young people there attitudes towards heterosexuality or homosexuality are all disordered. they are always thinking of the sexual component. the physical part. why is she so attracted to me why in my attracted to him. and it's going for very -- one very small component in the church is saying it has to be we have to look at ourselves as complete and other people as these complicated individuals and we have to explore.
5:19 am
i shouldn't really identify myself as gay. should not identify myself as heterosexual. i him a human person and i'm trying to get to know other people. >> the catholic perspective it's really a healing remedy to the over sexualized nature of our culture. >> that's great. thank you. so again leading to the next one that we are called to chastity no matter what our state in life. >> i think this is a challenge for many people and married people as well. we always have to look at the other person as someone who is endowed with gifts who we can relate to and who we don't think of or act in initially or ultimately in a way that's an appropriate with their commitment. now if it is my wife or
5:20 am
husband, all right then the sexual component is a probe -- is appropriate that otherwise even for a wife or husband, they can't be -- a guy can't be married and looking at all the women up and down and looking at this these women's and photos and that would be against chastity for a married man and similarly for a woman. >> even jesus said if you look and again, looking with the positive regard and wishing the best for the other person rather than taking which is sort of a love versus lust. >> this isn't even going into the area of pornography. were just talking about people who are married and this guys interested in this other woman and she's cute and they like her in talking to his friends about it. you are already against chastity by gauging something
5:21 am
5:23 am
[ music ] >> welcome back to mosaic i'm chris weichert and i'm here with john -- father john. we're going to some of the basic catholic teachings essential to our faith. we've gone through quite a few and we are doing well. the next segment were going to talk about marriage as an institution, covenant and sacrament. >> the covenant is marriage is an image of christ loving the church. so the head of the church and loving the church, his body.
5:24 am
that is imaged in the love of a man and a woman. the love of a man and a woman is supposed to love us -- remind us of god's love for -- for christ in the church. there is also an agreement or contact -- contract and the reason why there can be annulments in order for it to be a two contract you have to fully intend to promise to be married to this man or woman until death parts us and you have to do it freely. you can't do it with a gun to your head or you think unless i do this -- freedom is important. >> wonderful that the covenant aspect of marriage. now marriage and civil law. why the church is strong about perspective there. >> in the united states now. every minister catholic priest acts on behalf of the government. you register with the
5:25 am
government and as you know the married couple brings a marriage certificate with them in the priest signs it and send it in and then they get the official marriage certificate back again. the effort -- the church is the 1st official church witness but also witness for the state. now because there are so many people who are changing their understanding of marriage and the definition of marriage, there are priest and ministers who are saying we should change this. we should get out of the business of being officials of the state. we should just separate the things and it happens in europe. there are a number of catholic countries in europe and this has been true for decades and you want to get married and you go to city hall 1st. you get them to stamp the things and now as the
5:26 am
government is concerned you are married so in the afternoon you go to the church and of course you are not intimate until the church -- in the church waiting is distinct and the good thing about that is our concept of traditional marriage is very different from what civil unions are becoming nowadays. >> that makes a lot of sense. last topic. reproductive technology and what the church believes about that and human cloning. >> the church is certainly very sympathetic -- there are many women that want to have children and their tried and it's not working. they are inclined to think well i'm going to do i'm going to get the baby inseminated outside the womb.
5:27 am
the church, 1st of all the way that happens is usually there are many eggs that are insenated and only one is used . that is the primary reason. a secondary reason why they are against it if you can think of it as a medical procedure but in general this should be happening as a result of a loving act and not of the surgical act or a medical act and the church insists on that and you can see how important that is in our society >> thank you and what a great explanation for such a huge topic i am going to ask you folks if you want to hear or see what the church believes, just a little segment about cloning, you can go to our website where all of these are listed as self dutch -- sf.archdiocese.org and we will be developing that and i appreciate you father to at
