markets took a hit following a huge drop in chinese stocks and cbs reporter jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with the latest. >> the dow jones plummeted again at the opening bell. dropping more than 1,000 points in the first few minutes of training. the sell off continues last week's tumble on wall street. the dow plunged 530 points friday. it's worse session in four years. and the markets worst week since 2011. fears of china's economic slow down are shaking investors. stocks fell with china's index tumbling 8.5%. it's biggest one-day loss in eight years. the plunging price of oil, prices fell below $40 a barrel for the first time since 2009. the stock exchange is prepared to halt trading for 15 minutes if the s&p 500 falls 7%.

wall street is now in what's called a correction, a fall of 10% or more from the high. corrections are natural in a bull market. and most analysts say this one was long over due. >> long-term i'm still bullish. i still believe in the united states of america first and foremost as an investing opportunity. >> the last correction came four years ago. jill wagner, cbs news. >> the trading day is not over yet. an hour ago the dow was down 100 points. now it's down more than 600. here is jason brooks. >> some real whip saw action on the market today. we had an incredible come back. down 100 points. a 900 point come back. now a potential record single day drop. which is 777 points by the dow. of course you can't really compare the two. they're not even in the sense

that today's percentage drop is not nearly as bad as the one from six years ago that occurred. the stock market simply got frothy over the past seven years. tech stocks have gotten slammed. apple stock fell below $100. then it roared back as buyers jumped in thinking that the world's biggest brand is worth much more than that. that helped lift the stock market back. but now apple is sinking. and that's taking the blue chips with it. intel fairing better. the semiconductor has been slaughtered the past three sessions a lot of uncertainty out there. >> apparently that will continue for the next 60 minutes we have in trading. it's still fairly chaotic. >> the last 60 minutes are usually the most chaotic. we could see anything in this amount of tame. another big come back or perhaps test the earlier lows from earlier today which would be scary for many people. >> i know you and i caught our

breath when we saw it down 1,000 points. we'll see what the next 60 minutes holds. that's jason brooks. a fair broke out at a church on livermore this morning. the flames are out. but firefighters are at the scene. this is video from chopper 5 a half hour ago. firefighters cleaning out debris. the cause is under investigation. buildings crumbled and streets cracked the napa earthquake was felt across the bay area. now it's one year later and napa is still rebuilding. >> reporter: a year ago today, 15 seconds changed the lives of so many. >> it went like this, boom, boom, boom. >> rocking and rolling. i had never been in an earthquake like that before in my life. >> the biggest earthquake to hit the bay area in a quarter century. homes burned. hundreds injured. one woman died. the damage seen from santa rosa

to vallejo and napa. the city is rebuilding slowly. >> there were so many unknowns a year ago and a lot of fear. there were after shocks. and just a big mess to clean up. >> the damage was extensive. up to $300 million worth. napa's old wing isn't expected to open for the next two years. you still can't access sidewalks on first street in downtown. scaffolding and construction crews have been a permanent fixture there. the good news -- >> we've cleaned up and we're back on track to recovery. most of the building, i think 90%, 95% are back up and operational. >> when we were here last year the parking lot was full of cracks. today it's been repaved. but the city's mayor says there are dozens of homes red tagged and neighbors fear another quake could hit. >> i think that thing's coming again. i'm not ready. do i take the time to do it?

time goes by and you start forgetting. >> you know it's always in the back of your mind. especially with different movies coming out. we're right here on the fault. you never know. >> later this afternoon. city officials and neighbors will be meeting in veterans park to mark the one year anniversary of the quake. kpix 5. former 49er ray mcdonald did not enter a plea. instead court appearance was rescheduled for next month. he faces a number of charges for the incident that allegedly happened in may. he was released from the chicago bay area after details of his arrest came out. three americans who stopped a potential terror attack on a paris bound train are being called heroes today. the men have theys to sacramento. cbs's charlie is in france where the country's president honored them in a ceremony. >> specialist alex, army

national guard, airman first class spencer stone, u.s. air force, and their childhood friends anthony sadler, three ordinary guys who did an extraordinary thing. at the ambassadors residence, spencer stone described for the first time the moments he and his friends faced a heavily armed gunman head on. >> i looked down and i saw he had an ak 47. i tackled him. alec came up and grabbed the gun out of his hand while i put him in a choke hold. >> the suspect denied a terror attack saying he just wanted to rob passengers. >> it doesn't take eight magazines to rob a train. they grew up in a town near sacramento. sadler is a student at sacramento state university. they'll be honored by the president when they make their way back to the u.s. bart riders could be breathing easy during a

commute. >> bart elevators are filthy. a lot of disabled customers and people with luggage bear the brunt. >> bart is making over all 127 elle vaio elevators with new flooring. the first replacement project is now under way at the pleasant hill bart parking garage. today school started for kids in the east bay but the race to hire teachers continues. oklahoma unified school district still needs to hire 15 permanent teachers. teachers have been placed in classrooms with substitutes. potential candidates have been identified. but background checks are pending. today east oakland has a new charter school. rosa's opened its doors with a native american drumming ceremony. jeff duncan founded the school. right now it's k through 4th grade with plans to expand. some kids are children of former students. >> i brought my kids here

because i trust him. i trust the person he is. the educator he is. and so when he said he was founding this school, i was so excited. >> i'm going to make new friends. two of my friends are here. >> the dual language program has kids primarily from east oakland. a wildfire is 30% contained the fire broke out yesterday sending a massive plume of smoke into the air. so far 100-acres have burned and firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading over night. mandatory evacuations are in place for some 400 homes. and firefighters worked through the night to get a handle on the peterson fire. that one is burning on the west side of clearlake. it's the latest in a series of wildfires to hit lake county. since the fire started on saturday night, it's burned about 215-acres, and crews have the flames 30% contained.

meanwhile firefighters from as far as australia and new zealand answered a wide call for help in washington state. the latest group of fires grew over night and is expected to spread even more. right now firefighters are battling the largest wildfire in washington's history. resources were so strained, officials even trained volunteers to fight the flames. last week three firefighters died when flames over took their truck. coming up, the search intensifies for two shooting suspects in san jose. what the victim was doing the moment he was killed. and chart topping boy band "one direction" calls it quits. fans across the country are devastated. i sure can't beat that but i have a good forecast for you. gray skies have cleared up. blue skies over san jose this afternoon. coming up, just how warm it will get and how long we're go,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,

police say two suspects are on the run after shooting a man to death after he left a party. police are on the hunt for two suspects considered to be armed and dangerous in connection with an over night homicide. a man was down near story and king road in east san jose. officers found that man laying next to a vehicle where he was declared dead. they believe there was some kind of a party beforehand. but that still unconfirmed. about five square blocks were under lock down. >> it was like four shots. >> i told him not to go out there. when he came out, there were a bunch of cops out here. >> scary? >> oh yeah definitely. >> reporter: the victim was in his 30s. they believe he lives in this

neighborhood. this is the city's 20th homicide of the year. today the fate of hundreds of trees along san francisco's venice avenue is up to a department of public works. the question is whether or not to cut them down. it coincides with a plan to build a rapid bus system set to begin next year. if approved, about 200 trees could be taken out. but about 400 trees will be put in their place. some neighbors are calling the efforts halfhearted. let's go ahead and go to julie with how the day is shaping up. >> beautiful day. an absolutely beautiful day. let's check in with our weather watchers. we started out with gray skies area wide. 72 degrees. this is from bill moon, about an hour ago. plenty of sunshine. elsewhere, let's go farther inland. right now 80 degrees at the lunch hour. plenty of sunshine for you there thanks to weather watcher

paul smith. take a look outside. current temperatures area wide. a nice mild start. 76 in concord. 66 oakland. 72 san jose. and 66 in santa rosa. beautiful blue skies over the golden gate bridge. this is what you can expect for the next couple days. high pressure building back from the four corners region. this is going to increase temperatures today, tomorrow, keeping us warm through midweek, although we will likely bring in some clouds wrapping around this area of high pressure. likely over night tonight increasing until tomorrow. still going to see very warm temperatures. and a pretty nice afternoon. mostly sunny for pretty much everyone this afternoon. warmer inland than what we saw yesterday. mild temperatures along the bay and the coast with a few coastal clouds and patchy fog there. sunset tonight, 7:51. sunrise tomorrow morning, 6:34, 79 in mountain view today.

66 half-moon bay. 81 san jose. 69 the temperature in san francisco. warmest spots inland will bump up into the low 90s today. 88 fairfield. 88 in antioch. 82 in santa rosa. the extended forecast shows warmer still tomorrow. increasing temperature in the low to mid 90s for tuesday and wednesday. and then a shift in the forecast for the latter half of the week. bringing the temperatures down. increasing our cloud cover. going to be slightly cooler with highs in the mid 80s for the warmest spots by the end of the weekment. you're really bumping up temperatures on tuesday and wednesday inland. i was trying. >> what did the weekend guy say? >> 90. but i go with you. >> i'm adding a few degrees. i like to push the limits there. >> that a girl. >> we'll see we'll have to check in on tuesday and wednesday. >> let's compare notes. oh it's my turn. this is my favorite story.

"one direction" fans are sad to learn the british boy band is breaking up. >> so far "one direction" hasn't confirmed the split. but there are several reports that they're taking at least a yearlong break. just a few months ago, fans were devastated when one of the members quit. "one direction" is trending on twitter today. it'snearly took the day off work today. not in a good place since i heard the news but i respect their decision. #onedirection. a panda gives birth to twins. she gave birth to the cubs on saturday. look how tiny they are. they're the third set of twins to be born in the u.s. only

jackie became the man of the house when he was a kid. when he was 18 he wanted to go to college to support his family. >> now he's a college grad and still rising above. kpix 5's wendy with the story. >> reporter: at carlton college in minnesota, jackie did something no one else in his family has ever done. >> jackie lou. >> reporter: his mom, twin sisters, and brother were there. >> graduating college means finally escaping the cycle of poverty that's troubled us for so many years. >> reporter: his mother needed no words to tell him what it meant. >> the first thing she said was, it was just a hug. like a really, really big hug. >> reporter: to really see the

significance, we go back now to 2011. when we first met jackie. his mom was raising him and his three siblings on her own after hassing their father to gambling and alcohol. >> he would gamble all his money away. he wouldn't work. and by the time he left, he owed rent for almost a year. >> jackie's mom had to borrow money from her sister in china to get by. she spoke no english. jackie took charge. >> i was afraid of not getting fed, being homeless. >> he really is the man of the family. he wants to achieve something for himself and his family, he's going to figure out a way to do it. >> reporter: jackie found this low income housing for his family. he figured out how to get scholarships to private schools for himself and his siblings.

to make sure they all got a good education. >> which of our senses is located in our hands ? >> reporter: he's the official contact person at the school for his sisters. >> jackie graduated from the prestigious san francisco university high school. >> i'm sure most people have a rough idea that i'm receiving financial aid to go to my school. but they don't really know what i've been through. >> it must be hard and strange. >> it is. >> reporter: but necessary he new to change the trajectory of his family and to go to college. >> college is a new breakthrough, i guess a step in our family's lives. and now it's finally happening. and i'll be the first one. >> reporter: he was. but now his brother is also a student rising above at u.s.c. and jackie is in a research training program at the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases.

extracurricular activities help provide a sense of identity and a path to success. joining the soccer team... getting help with math... going to prom. i want to learn to swim. it's hard to feel normal... ...when you can't do the normal things.
