we're seeing tourism. we want the people to say that was -- [ shot ] >> a horrific story unfolds on live television and social media today. a reporter and a cameraman in virginia shot and killed live on the air this morning. the gunman a man who grew up in the bay area.

good afternoon, i'm brian hackney. frank is off today. >> i'm maria medina. breaking news this noon. the suspect who targeted a tv news crew during a morning broadcast is now dead. authorities confirming he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. investigators in virginia described him as a disgruntled former employee. he opened fire at point-blank range during a morning newscast. [ pause ] reporter alison parker and photographer adam ward for cbs affiliate wdbj tv were gunned down live on the air during an early-morning interview. >> we want the people to come here to say that was -- [ shot ] >> reporter: the shooting happened at the bridgewater plaza shopping mall at moneta, virginia, 20 miles east of roanoke. the station's brennemaner. >> someone with a -- general manager. >> someone with a gun, we believe it was a man, barged into where they were and fired several shots, six or seven it sounded like. we heard screaming. and, um, then we heard nothing.

>> reporter: the camera kept rolling as it fell to the ground and captured a glimpse of the gunman identified as vester flanagan who once worked for the station as a reporter. hours later using his on air name bryce williams he posted his first person video of the shooting apparently from a camera he carried along with a handgun. a short time later police surrounded a car on a virginia freeway where he shot himself. >> you think of the families and friends and coworkers impacted by what happened today. >> reporter: parker had just turned 24, ward was 27. the roanoke times reports the woman being interviewed the head of the local chamber of commerce was also shot in the back and is being treated. compounding the tragedy both the reporter and photographer killed were in relationships with coworkers at the local station. anne makovec is in the newsroom with a closer look at flanigan's connection to the bay area. >> reporter: we are piecing more together on the shooter in

this case. vester flanagan grew up in oakland attending skyline high school graduated from sf state in 1995 with a degree in radio and tv and flanagan actually worked here at kpix 5 in 1996 as a production assistance and before that he was an intern in our newsroom. >> reporter: he tried to make a career out of video broadcasting but there's one we can't show on air this morning's shooting from the shooter's point of view posted on twitter this morning. vester flanagan went by the name bryce williams on air. these are some of the clips he posted on his twitter account from his years in television. a linkedin account attached to bryce williams says he worked as a news reporter and haing ngor several markets most -- anchor in several markets most recently the same virginia station as victims. his facebook and twitter accounts were taken down but before they were, tweets appeared minutes after the

shooting, one said that a report was filed with the u.s. equal employment opportunity commission against parker over, quote, racist comments. another said ward went to the station's human resources office after, quote, working with me one time. on the air today, the station's general manager said those claims were examined and dismissed. other information listed on the suspect's linkedin page, that he worked in newsroom in odessa, texas, an greenville north korea. it also says he was a customer service rep for pg&e in 2001. a little more on his time here at kpix 5. i spoke this morning with former kpix 5 anchor barbara rodgers. she said she didn't know him well but remembered him as a young eager kid out of journalism school who wanted to be on tv and to do a good job. she added, he is now on tv but in the worst possible way. we have crews around the east and north bay today. it appears flanagan had ties to oakland and vallejo. tune in for more at 5:00 and

6:00. live in the newsroom, anne makevoc, kpix 5. thank you. we'll continue to follow this developing story. for more information, head to our website, cbssf.com. it took rescue crews to save a woman from a cliff after she fell partially because of her dogs. the woman and a man fell more than 100 feet just after 1:00 in the morning while walking their two pit bulls in daly city. the man climbed back up but the woman was stranded about 150 feet from the bottom of the cliff. crews could not reach her for a while because they say the pit bulls were aggressive. the u.s. coast guard and north county fire crews called in animal control to get the dogs. the stock market was off to another strong start this morning. the dow jones was up 400 in the opening minutes. a similar story played out yesterday where the dow rallied for most of the day to see all its gains wiped out they final hour. concerns about china's slowing economy are contributing to the volatility on the trading

floor. traders are bracing for more wild swings in the days and weeks ahead as the stock market enters the fall. traditionally the most tumultuous time of the year. looking at the big board, is it up or down? lots of green there. up more than 400 points. final look at the last few remnants of candlestick park now. chopper 5 was over san francisco this morning giving us a look at the final phase of the demolition. a massive development project set to be built here. it's going to include 10,000 new homes. many of which will be designated affordable housing. a hearing continues today for the suspect in the shooting of kate steinle the woman shot and killed at pier 14 in san francisco. prosecutors who tried to find out if there's enough evidence to try juan sanchez for the murder. during testimony, a police detective said a tourist claimed to have pictures of a man walking away as people rushed to help kate but none of the pictures show sanchez's face. san francisco sanctuary policy is under fire since kate's

death. the suspect had been deported five times. a gunman is facing terrorism charges for his foiled attack on a european train barefoot and blindfolded. the suspect was escorted to face the charges in a french court. the prosecutor said he pumped himself up for the attack by watching a jihad video inside the bathroom of the train before emerging shirtless and strapped with nearly 300 rounds of ammunition. and the first of four americans who help stop that gunman on a train in france is back in sacramento. the young man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack touched down yesterday. he is a worldwide hero. passengers on board the plane knew who sandler was and several thanked him. a parade is planned for him and two others in sacramento. san leandro police are looking for a thief. the snazzy dresser robbed a bank of the west this month. police say that he came in when the store opened and demanded cash. then he went out the back door. anybody with information should

contact san leandro police. and san francisco police are searching for a burglar who made off with more than $30,000 in cash. surveillance cameras caught the thief in action. the suspect watched the isles at the produce market on fillmore street before slipping into the back office. he poked around for a few seconds and eventually finds a box full of money. he stuffed his pockets with wads of cash and takes off. silicon valley has been criticized for its lack of women in tech. now a south bay college is walking the walk to change that. kiet do was at the graduation comprised mostly of women. >> welcome to our 7th annual gsb closing ceremonies. you'll soon be able to travel across the pond from san jose airport. that airport is partnering with british airways to provide a new nonstop flight from san jose to london. the announcement was made this morning by mayor sam liccardo and airport officials. it comes after high demand from silicon valley travelers. mayor liccardo says the market potential for this route is 900,000 passengers and the flight also begin next may. san francisco commuters waste an average of 77 hours in traffic last year. that's according to a new report from texas a & m. washington, dc had the longest delays. los angeles second worst followed by san francisco. and san jose had the fifth heaviest traffic in the nation. overall cities with fast growing economies and strong job growth have the worst traffic. new safety technology in our cars is also changing crash tests. the group known for crashing cars now looking at preventing

accidents. 14 cars with auto brake technology earned a superior ranking. that technology helps to avoid front end crashes. the insurance institute for highway safety tested some of those cars including acura and bmw. >> technology is available to us today that wasn't available 30 years ago is making it possible to focus on crash avoidance. >> the insurance institute for highway safety says about half of new 2015 vehicles have available front crash prevention technology and roughly one in four has auto braking as an option. a southern california man tried to take a selfie with a rattlesnake and now he is in danger of losing a hand. alex gomez of lake elsinore spotted a 4-foot snake in a field by his family's ranch put the snake around his neck -- and was bitten on the hand, which then swelled up and now gomez is being treated with
